Did you know J Carrol Nash was Irish, but, was always type cast as Mexican, Spanish, Italian or even American Indian. It’s what is referred to as “Black Irish “ because of his natural appearance and color. He was a great actor and character actor as well! Loved his work.
Most Legionnaires rode mules rather than horses. I would think the murdered man's family would have some idea that these men were unlikely to be real legionnaires. Also, only officers would carry revolvers. And why would legionnaires leave the horses that were there, if on a hit-and-run mission? The really unbelievable thing is when a legionnaire mentions that there is no liquor allowed in the compound. Ha - the Legion nearly always had wine among their food and drink I guess one has to suspend one's disbelief. And if a helicopter flew in that captain, why not use it for aerial reconnaissance of the relief column? Other than that, I enjoyed the movie.
Other than the bad military decisions, it's not a bad movie. Those decisions included not using the helicopter to search for the missing relief, taking the machine guns off the ramparts and having all the survivors in one room. Secondly, it is highly unlikely that the legion would not fight to last man in the style of Capt. Jean Danjou who led the legionnaires at Camerone. This is a part of Legion history that every legionnaire has drummed into him from the day he enlists.

an American could never hold officer rank in the Legion. That was solely given to native Frenchmen, most likely graduates of St. Cyr.

Machine gun fire doesn't kill the horses and poor defense of the walls. Seems dumb.
horses are immune to lead 😉
