I also just discovered Denise Johnson was the singer who sang at the very end of this song and I've been trying to figure out what she's singing for the last 30 years! Anyone have a clue?
Everything that Bernard Sumner turns his hand to manages to soothe my soul. The partnership with Johnny Marr was inspired, producing such melodic and melancholic songs that I still love today. Timeless.
One hundred percent agree. That perfect alchemical mix between melody, harmony, emotion, memory.Bernard and Johnny were terrific.Know every word to each of the songs.
I too had spells of unemployment in the 80's but they were really really good exciting times. I couldn't be young right now... what a shit show of a toxic world its turned into, people are awful & music in general is just utter shite... late 80's early 90's best time, best music, better people... No comparisons...
2023 and still here. this songs always lifts up the spirit. Joy devision with the Smiths and with the Pet Shop Boys, what can one want more?perfection song.
Definitely expresses life in that time - sickly as it may sound to anyone under 30 yrs. old - the speed of life, the additionals that were part of it all for musicians, artists, money poles., heady, yeah! destructive, yeah! but of the time. For all those still left running, God Bless you for keeping ahead of the ‘80’s marathon. Love always, bless you, Jane
I remeber in 1991, my last year of school playing this with the Violator album on my Dixon’s ghetto blaster (taped from radio1, remember that?) & driving my parents bonkers. I left school that summer and had my mind blown away by Terminator 2. What a year 1991, bravo!
This track really did signify the end of a wonderful era for me. I had been a real 80's music freak & this was my last year at school. The turn of the 90's saw some pretty weird stuff out there which did nothing for my musical appeal. However, once in a while great stuff like this came along.Gone were the beautiful, warm fuzzy tracks that made me feel good in the 80's. Welcome to introspective tunes like Get The Message which told me that every great thing must ultimately come to an end.
Every time i listen to this SUPERB track it takes me straight back to my late teens. Our local was The Essex Barn, the incredibly cool pool hall/bar/pub/weekend rave club that i very luckily had in Braintree in Essex in my youth. This was the first place we started drinking at 16-17 years old in 90/91. This awesome track featured on The Barns laserdisc video jukebox (The Size Of A Cow by The Wonder stuff was another that permanently lodged into my mind to form part of the soundtrack of my time at The Barn) I got my first girlfriend, expanded my group of mates, first played pool, got drunk, first car and more all occurred around this time (90-92) They were such incredible times and this song in particular really grabbed hold of me. Maybe a year or two later i got well into New Order and it wasn`t until later that i realised that Sumner sang this too. So i remembered New Order and Joy Division from my younger years as a little kid and into Primary and Secondary, then Electronic in my late teens and twenties. Great times that i miss immensely.
These top pop lists can feck off. New Order and, through Sumner, Electronic, have greater acclaim and following that any top of the pop could ever enjoy, and for so many years!
Amazing band. The days of proper songs. Extremely underrated. You never hear their songs on radio. Would love it if they reformed and did something new!
I'm not really into much dance oriented music, but bought this album when it came out in '91. Probably on the strength of this song. Loved it then, & still love it today. It's one of those pure pop songs so full of joy.
The 12" "cassingle" of this was stuck in the tapedeck of my purple VW bug for an entire summer and I didn't mind because it's an amazing song and every mix is epic.
Best comment here, as I look through them. It is indeed pure pop perfection, but I was more taken by the first half of what you said, there. An incredible talent, Barney Sumner. And there are plenty of New Order tracks that still sound as if they might have been written yesterday.
Holy shit. I've not thought of this tune in tiiiiiiiiiiiime. Autoplay gave it to me. & I can instantly sing all the words. I was only half way through secondary school when this came out, and today I turned 46. 32 years. Duuuuuuuuuude.
I was 19 when I bought the LP the week it was released and still listen to it now - amazing album and this has always been my favourite track. The opening guitar part makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Fantastic backing vocals by the great Denise Johnson - and that bassline - it’s just perfect.
Synergism is really what Electronic is all about... I can hear the separate parts from the combination of the guys but then they take it to a whole other level! Long live these brilliant Brit boys bringing bright blends by boisterous beautiful beats.?.
wow . . after so many years . . . . I still adore this song . . . . . . It reminds me of some good days. . . I wish music were still like this . . . . . I still follow Johnny Marr . . . . .
I heard this on the radio about 20 years ago but didn’t hear who sung it. Was then on a mission to track the song which I eventually did! An instant falling in love occurred one of my favourite all time songs 🎶❤️🎶❤️🎶
Having been a New Order devotee for 30 years,it will come as little surprise that I was a serious flag-waver for Electronic...they played out the backdrop between the end of my A Levels,my time at university,my first marriage...all kinds...Still brilliant to this day...
These were brilliant. Mixing indie guitars with synths, powerful girl vocals on backing , I think I even copied Johnny Marr hair style around 91 or 93 . I was at school :)
I just randomly DL'd an instrumental version of this song w/ her background vocals still prominent. It made me want to look up info about her, and I found out she just died last month. At least her voice will live on forever.

Still loving this in 2019. Reminds me of growing up in Manchester, around the age of 10, having no idea just how good Manchester music was at that time. I know now and I'm very proud to have so many talented musicians from my area.
I have had this song in my head for days trying to recall who the musicians were. So today I Googled who sings the song "I don't know where to begin living in sin" and viola....Electronic! Oh my God talk about a song taking me back to a special time when I was living in LA. This song....this song...
Great memories of a works Christmas party in 91. Drink was imbibed, mistakes were made, it got messy! A year later we did it all again (and a few times in between!). Good times.
I remember a tough time driving my white sports car down the coast by the ocean in Oregon. One of the first warm sunny days of spring in the CD playing, lifting my spirits. 😎
I was an 18 year old high school senior when this came out in 1991. Two musical legends, and to think Marr was only 27 years old! What the F were you doing at 27?

Rest In Peace Denise Johnson who provided the wondrous backing vocals to this track. A true Manchester legend.
Thanks for posting you comment, I didn’t know this. Have you heard The Memphis Sessions Primal Scream with Denise singing Free…..it’s off the scale
It’s defo on Apple Music, dunno bout Spotify
She had a Manchester voice we all loved and she was so underrated. Rest in peace Manchester bee. 🐝
Denise Johnson was great. She did backing for Bernard Butler too.
I also just discovered Denise Johnson was the singer who sang at the very end of this song and I've been trying to figure out what she's singing for the last 30 years! Anyone have a clue?
Johnny marrs guitar sounds are absolute class.
Great bass too ❤
The guys are a perfect synergy. Class act all round, Electronic. Greatest supergroup I can think of.
Memories of a train journey from Doncaster to Edinburgh, listening to this on cassette single over & over until my batteries ran out!
Im from donny too. And i agree total feel good music
Yes... my walkman was fitting just fine these days
Haha you liked it then.
You can make it all in time.
Helen Christie my journey was back from Leeds uni to Stafford but same scenario😍

30 years to the day of its release. Thank you Bernard and Johnny and also thinking of the late great Denise Johnson and her amazing vocals.
Adds a lightning sparkle to it
I've only just discovered this.
We’re does time go 😢
Johnny Marr is a guitar master.
In my opinion Bernard is not far behind
Living through the 80’s & 90’s was a breeze, cracking 20 years for some classic tunes. If you were there, you know what I mean 😂
👋¡ESTUVE ALLÍ!!!! Y lo sigo estando cada vez q en la radio pasan esa música 🎶😊🇦🇷

The most underrated album of the time.
I love that my 23 year old son just told me that he's been looking for this song forever, after hearing me play it for him as a little child.
How lovely ❤
You did good.
❤
Brilliant. Sumner + Marr = Quality. Cant believe this was 1991. What a great year!
perfect song, criminally underrated ...
I couldn't agree with you any more!
Electronic ,, what can you say?
A band way ahead of it's time.
RIP Denise Johnson thanks for the superb vocals which lift the outro to a different level
Such a seriously great song.....and an early nineties classic.
i was around in manchester back in this era, early 90s, wish i could go back. great times.

25 years anniverary of this song....one of the top 10 UK hit single Electronic ever had. Severely under- rated
25 years already..feeling old now. A great song with such variety of sound that just blends perfectly. Very few songs from any group do it as well.
These top pop lists can feck off. New Order and, through Sumner, Electronic, have greater acclaim and following that any top of the pop could ever enjoy, and for so many years!
RasputinWatchSite I agree
Amazing band. The days of proper songs. Extremely underrated. You never hear their songs on radio. Would love it if they reformed and did something new!
Greatest hits radio with Rossie, he loves this. So do I!
Johnny Marr plays this in his set, granted Barney isn't there so he sings it but it's still class.
Saw him live with tha Charlatans the other night
What a fantastic gated snare . 1980s sounds that live forever.
30 years old !!!!! Never ages and just a classic.
Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner what a combo. Get the message, this has to be my favourite Electronic track, great stuff. 👏
TUNE! What a time to be alive!! 🙏🏾✌🏾👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Bought album on vinyl from Woolworths & played constantly, improves like a fine wine, Respect. ✌️🌎🙏
I'm here from seeing a Facebook post saying this was released about now in 1991. Brilliant, brilliant song.

One of my favorite songs of all time, listen to it when I need to remind myself of the beautiful girl that I once was...
Yeah... it takes me back to simpler times, too! 🙂

Wow, I felt that..
I don’t know you, but know you still are!

No one plays the guitar like Johnny Marr.
Excellent tune from 1991 which I still listen to in 2019, this makes modern day music look tripe.

Neither Bernard or Johnny have written a duff song. I think they've had it drummed into them not to.....which is no bad thing.
A song to travel to a place that brings you peace and good memories
Master piece
amazing collaboration, i've been listening for 30 years and still absolutely amazing
My personal favorite on this album and never understood why it didn't get the airplay it deserved.
