I’m glad that you pointed out the lack of darker skin tone representation on the show… The few they do have gets little screen time.. I thought the “theater girl” was going to be a potential main character this season but she was just a extra to me 🤦🏽♂️.. Drake and Future needs to do better being that they are producers on this show..
Also notice that everybody got a background episode including cal but they left out the black dark skin mom who has more of a reason to have one. Her child was the main character. She is ignored.
To be fair there isn't a reason to show Leslie's background the way they do Cal's. Leslie's stress and trauma comes from Rue and her husband passing. We don't have any context for Cal's for a really long time. We don't know why he's so fucked up.
I hope Bobbie (the black girl with Lexi) gets more screen time next season because her personality is very interesting to me. I believe she can become a fan favorite in fact especially if they write her into the story correctly. Shoutout to you Crystal this was a great video an breakdown but u missed one song that they played in euphoria lol MEGAN THEE STALLIONS COCKY ASF. When they played "Love Like This" by Faith Evans during the hot tub scene for Maddy's bday was when I really started to notice how much our culture is referenced in this show. It made me side eye the show a bit, especially since the creatives behind the scenes are not Black. I'm really interested to know if the show would have been as successful without our culture's music.

@@gocookies77 no we don't, However the show ITSELF is based around black culture, and has two black rappers helping create it. Wtf were you expecting? Riverdale?💀 And she didn't explain if the lady forgave rue because that's not what the video is about.
I always noticed the black influence on this show, especially the rap & r&b music during certain scenes. Also the fact that there are 0 black girls/women in EUPHORIA. The only actual black ppl is Rue mom and sister. And look at Gia complexion. Hollywood is very racist + colorist and insist on using “safe” black people (GIRLS/WOMEN) who are most likely bi-racial, mixed, or just lighter complexions. They must think throwing in McKay is enough for black folks, and he was only on 1 episode season 2🤣
Ummm no. You mean black mens culture not black ppl. They don’t have to show black women in the show at all because black women didn’t create hip hop, RnB, Jazz, Motown, Soul, Soul train, Blues, Disco, ext All of that stuff was mostly made by black men so by default it’s black mens culture. You don’t see black men cry1ng when we don’t put them in our shows but it’s always blk women crying c0l0rism and r@c1sm. Blk men are the ones who try to be w0ke on twitter. It’s always teenage blk girls that complain about everything and try to speak on behalf of the culture that blk men made. Blk men made hip hop and you don’t see them complaining about it being used on our shows This is why men must come together and take the redpill because w0men and this twitter fem1nism wh1ney stuff is getting old. I think Euphoria could’ve easily been an early 00s show on HBO. There’s so many references to the 00s that I thought it was intentional. Also Bobbi was absolutely amazing!
This video sums up all my major issues with this show perfectly. I really hope people watch this and understand how “blackness” is extracted from black culture to make it more palatable and universal while doing away with the originators of all this amazing culture. As a black suburban kid who went to euphoria adjacent schools, thank you
They say suburban kids are the biggest fans of hip hop so it's no surprise to see that they would model these suburban kids as representations of that. As a suburban kid I saw alot of Hispanics wearing our styles except they were usually alittle late with it. They would be wearing the stuff we wore a year or so before. That vape girl tho is annoying lmao
@@darnellwilliams8783 She didn’t say anything was wrong with growing up in the suburbs. I grew up in the suburbs myself. And yes, there is a difference between the burbs and the city life. In the suburbs, the education is ahead in most cases than the city. They say there are more crimes in the city than the burbs, but that can be said by anyone’s opinion.
@@darnellwilliams8783 huh? Where did I say anything was wrong with the suburbs? Lol. Suburban kids love hip hop she even just said it in the video. White suburban kids are the biggest consumers of hip hop. And those kids draw inspiration from the visuals and buy all the streetwear. I saw it. Hell I did it lol
This show makes me sad because like I miss the 2000s era so much even though it brings me back like the pop culture and stuff 😢 gosh I miss being a kid.
Since the 70's, IMO, we have seen an uptick in the commodification of black culture, especially in fashion, and I think it really ramped up around the 90's to early 2000's. The 2010's saw a dip to a steady low incline, but that only lead the way for the 2020's to truly shine with the comeback of y2k aesthetics that were absolutely DOMINATED by black women.
I stopped watching it. It’s toxic, messy, over-sexualizes teenagers, and appropriates Black culture without calling out that young white kids are they main consumers of Hiphop. Also a white man writing for young people of color, young people involved in criminal activity, and trans people is tired… period. Season one was a lot but I thought it shed light on a young person struggling with addiction and depression. However The first couple episodes of season two was a trauma porn dumpster fire that does no work. It’s all shock value. Also I’m not saying teens today don’t listen to 90’s and 2000’s Hiphop but I found it unrealistic that there was so much old music played at their parties when this is set in modern day times. I don’t know. Maybe I’ll finish it. Maybe not.
I honestly had no problem not seeing my ppl on the show since it was already a messy show. But now that you pointed out all the culture's references I'm like wait a minute. I still don't want many of my ppl in a toxic show like Euphoria but the heavy culture references definitely need to be addressed. WTF is up with that?
I understand why you wouldn’t want to see black youth in the show but I feel like we need to see diversity of black characters. YT ppl get to be seen in various dimensions via characters which makes different type of white folks accepted (besides the obvious reasons) but as we know black people get type casted into a few lanes (i.e. gangsta, violent, sidekick inky there to serve the yt main character & etc) which is why I wouldn’t mind more black teens in this series. Show us in different lights cause we all have different experiences as black ppl in this world.
I really liked this explanation of how Euphoria appropriate Black popular culture for mainly white consummers. I hope you can do a video on how Kpop appropriate Black aesthetics.
See that’s why I can’t really get into the show but you was dropping jewels. I always like the eye makeup and jewelry and never knew it came from Nina Simone.🥰 I screamed when Rue dropped “The Wire” characters names😂😂😂
I can tell Sam Levinson is in his mid 30s because Maddy looks like how just about every popular Mexican or Latina I went high school with in the late 90s/ early 00's did.
I know everyone would like representation for Black people and other people of color on the show but specifically for dark skin girls and women I’m glad Bobbi is a soft-spoken character I like that she isn’t in the limelight I think Black people should sit this one out because not every representation is good representation I don’t think we should be included in this show as a whole I mean the show is good but it’s about drug addicts and reighpe and drama Sure they don’t have to make black characters addicts or crappy ppl like they did with Bobbi or anything at least I’m hoping they don’t now if they do add black characters I think they should be side characters that are like Bobbi different in their own way and they aren’t a trope but I think black ppl should sit this out let white these teenagers and white adults have their show and I think at least call them out for cultural appropriation if they don’t add poc and black folks then at least call them out for cultural appropriation because if we aren’t on their show why do y’all gotta use out fashion our music and stuff 🤷🏾♀️
I really appreciate the writers putting in the effort to making all of these references of Black Culture, you don’t get that too often in the media. Now if only the writers put the same effort in the scripts to make the show bearable to notice these reference.
@@MarjorieStewartBaxter 😕 you just kinda threw their names out as if that made a difference .. wouldn’t you like to see a show that thrived off of black culture actually include more black characters (and not ones who are mixed or barely given a storyline)?

Your hard work and commentary on topics is always so spot on and timely. I just knew whoever was over music for this show was black 😭the selection is good! ( that hot tub scene I was jammin 😂) it’s still so interesting to me to see so many white teenagers wearing forces, Jordan’s, “streetwear” etc because when I was a teenager (2004-09) you never saw it 😳. Even the way these young white girls talk, “girl this and girl that” which is still cringey to me lol, l find myself thinking do they wanna be white or black bcuz y’all weren’t behaving and talking like this when I was growing up. 🥴 I love that we ARE and will FOREVER be the BLUEPRINT 💅.
Harriyanna sent me here, and I like this take! It's really telling how there's certain biases that make it so that you enjoy someone's culture but hate the people themselves. It's like certain people (racists) will enjoy tacos but hate Mexicans, or like the qipao/cheongsam but write off the Chinese for it. Sooo infuriating... Anyways, I'll continue searching for better content to spend my time on so thanks for the analysis!
This is so important for non black kids to see. I’m Latina, and I am sad to say I appropriated black culture so much in high school in the mid 2000s, because I went to a white school and my friends were all black/latino I legit thought it was ok to wear cornrows. Smdh
Its ok, Especially if a black person offered to do them on you, but if you were wearing them like people do now, then you'd be wrong. There's a big difference between appropriation and appreciation.
I've been binge watching Euphoria to catch up. I'm on season 2 now but I must say it's been.......interesting 😂 I love your channel and look forward to the uploads ❤
I think it was very intentional of them giving alot if o's to hip hop & r&b because it's the biggest genre now. Folks love having a black in the tuck lmao. I still like the show tho.
I just want to know why they are going so hard on the black music on a show about teen rebellion. Why is black culture seen as so rebellious. I could kind of understand why rap is seen as rebellious. But black music and culture in general has always been seen rebellious.
We’re not even gonna talk about how the music was all drenched in beautiful black 90s R&B and hip-hop samples and originals. So Iconic breakdown bftv📌🚨♥️
This is why the cultural appropriation conversation can’t begin and end with giving credit. Because even when given credit, where are we in this damn show? How would these hypothetical stories about Black and dark sinned folks be handled? How are these Black trendsetters benefitting from being used? Are they profiting as much as the nonblack folks commodifying our shit? Is it being used in a positive way that doesn’t contribute to stereotypes or the erasure of Black culture? Love the video and thank you for doing what needs to be done.
" It always comes back to black women as the trendsetters". 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I think the Eve paw look is so overlooked and very unnecessary added to Maddy's outfit in season 2. The show has an amazing cast but I can't digest the stolen looks and appropriation of black culture looks displayed on the show. Especially to the lack of black actor's or even extra's.
So I tried to watch this show I might try again. It makes me cringe and I found myself thinking damnnnn we were like this in high school we weren't this bad and I only graduated 11 years ago. But you brought up a great point. This is not our prospective. This is the white 2022 prospective and actually shows how white children do not see through the glamorized culture as many blCk children do and it also shows that black parents aren't as allowing of every damn thing like white parents
I like when some people acknowledge our culture while giving credit but I don't like when we're just used as props to make non black characters look cool.I feel like lexi's director should be included more into the show but in a positive way.I did like the show but season 2 was a hot mess.
My flattery usually changes to disguise when black people represent their own culture are considered ghetto or unprofessional but when white people wear it it is considered contour or edgy.black people have always been the cultural standard without reaping the benefits…….it’s giving cultural colonialism.

So glad to finally see the face behind the soothing voice also happy to see that you have a new sponsorship with ScentBird, Congratulations to you 👏🏾👍🏾❤‼️
As a Latino observing Maddy’s character, she is barely a Latina on the show and everything you said about her clothes is what proves my point. In addition, almost no Latino has the stereotypes that are portrayed by American media. That’s why the spicy Latina thing upsets me, especially because the only Latinos I see on TV shows are Mexican who act like what Americans on the media think we act like. It would be highly nice and necessary to see Latinos from other Spanish speaking countries in American TV shows who does express what most Latinos actually act like around others and showing something new that most Americans don’t know about a particular country, and not making them act tough and loud.
Beautifully done video and information. You put so much effort into your videos and it shows. I was instantly turned off from Euphoria when I peeped how Fez has the "hood" yt boy aesthetic/trope yet he has ZERO Black friends. I was thinking isn't this supposed to be the suburbs?! Lol. I was so confused. I also peeped the Latina girl using Black women's aesthetics too but hey the kids are eating it up. I don't like it however the reality you stated at the end is very much prevalent. * heavy sigh *
The fact that I kept watching your video through your sponsorship is amazing. lol Your voice is so soothing. And you are so so so sooo pretty wowzers! I loved season 1 and I have no complaints. Season 2 wasnt bad but the content was all over the place. I have so many questions. Rue bought drugs with the intention to sell them but her mother her suitcase of drugs and flushed them down the toilet. Yet, in the final episode Rue talks about being sober for the remainder of the year. So did the drug lords decide not to look for her and obtain payment? Also, wasnt Nate gay? why did Sam deviate from that narrative? Also, wasnt Kat a Dominatrix? Where the hell was McKay? I HAVE SOOO MANY QUSTIONS!!!! Love your content. Looking forward to your next video.
I always thought it was odd too, the show is obviously so influenced by black culture but there are not that many fully black characters on the show compared to the others
I agree with everything you said except when it came to Fezco and Ash. They don’t have to have black friends to be considered hood and I feel like that associates blackness with being hood when being black isn’t monolithic.

I think today's fashion is a mix of 90s fashion and 60s fashion. It makes me think of the patterns and the skirts and the chunky heels and the platform sandals and the crop tops not to mention the fusion of 60s mod patterns and hair flipped up instead of under is also making me think of that movie "Jawbreaker" that came out in the nineties in which their fashion was very similar to 60s fashion meets 90s as well
I would just love if season three could feature an unambiguously black female main character. I won't hold my breath though. We're just props. They love the trends we start, but not our image. 😒 Again shout out to Veronica Taylor/Bobbi. She was hilarious.
I have never even seen Euphoria, and don’t plan on it. I had a feeling the audience was suburban white kids but they love our culture.
Maybe not.
Omg same it's soo toxic and oversexualizing teenagers and as you described it

I understand why you wouldn’t want to see black youth in the show but I feel like we need to see diversity of black characters. YT ppl get to be seen in various dimensions via characters which makes different type of white folks accepted (besides the obvious reasons) but as we know black people get type casted into a few lanes (i.e. gangsta, violent, sidekick inky there to serve the yt main character & etc) which is why I wouldn’t mind more black teens in this series.
