This video taught me a lot about the Bomber Long A. I kept dropping so many smaller fish with the the two 2/0 VMC 9626 hooks so I swapped them out with two 1/0 VMC 8527 6X hooks and I almost never dropped another fish. Thanks for another great video!
Funny that plug manufactures go to such great lengths to paint / laminate color & pattern details. I've had some success with Yo -Zuri, and other darters, in bone white or with just a touch of color up front, and of course eyes. Makes me think the extra detail is predominantly for marketing-wow! purposes.
Thank you again - i just got a Bomber Magnum 16A for the holidays, and this helped address my question on whether or not removing the middle hook would affect the action. Appreciate the video!
"the little ones" I'm so jealous. I;ve been fishing the south jersey beaches for the past 5 years and only hooked one striper... John is the striper whisperer...!
Yup! Bought this lure today because I watched this video today. Started fishing at 1730hrs nothing nothing...it got to about 2030hrs low light and BANG!! Fish on. Like fucking magic
nice fishing,i have still never caught a decent sized striper yet. the only ones i ever caught were 12-14" on UL gear with 5 pound braid. it was really fun getting them on the light gear though
John, the Lamiglas rod that you use was rated for 2 to 4 ounces as a 10 foot blank. I assume that cutting a foot off off of the butt lowered the weight rating, perhaps making it more suitable for lures in the 3/4 ounce to 2 ounce range or so. Am I correct? What is the heaviest lure that you would cast with that rod now? By the way, thanks for sharing so much knowledge via RUclips videos.
To Bill Clinzel, re: "digging into the bottom." Bill, depending on the water depth, my Bombers may be digging into the bottom for most of the retrieve. They will at least dig in near the end of the retrieve as they approach the beach, unless there is a very steep lip. I have had many stripers grab the lure as it was digging into the bottom, so I'm okay with that. Plus, I usually fish Bombers with a teaser, which gives the fish an offering that is higher in the water column.
bombers are great lures and maybe a tad underrated for casting distance. i usu. get them out there fairly well. i noticed all the small fish you have to weed thru to get to the better ones, same is true for me. theyre born so aggressive immediately they hit this thing when its bigger than they are! they usually dont get cute with bombers either. they absolutely nail it. I have wondered: dont you find yourself lip-hooking alot of these? i drop a few fish on them because of it...
John Skinner Fishing agreed. interesting how productive the newly styled SP's will be. out soon i hear. maybe another month. I fish the Plymouth area up here in Mass. You know, pilgrims, buckled hats, that whole scene. p.s. Im sure they ate more striper and cod and less actual turkey for that first thanksgivin.
Interesting that you prefer the Bomber A vs. the SP Pro in shallower conditions. My experience is the opposite; finding that the Bomber gets hung up more when it's shallow.
Hi John, it's Tyler. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. They are inspirational, educational l, and entertaining . I am an avid fisherman, I know that your videos are shot in NY, as I live on the coast of SC, tides, and shoreline are a bit different. Most of my adventure is freshwater, and I was looking for a nice fishing kayak. I have seen yours and it is a sit on , I'd say around 14 ft for saltwater, I was needing one that I could sit on, for my adventure in creeks and rivers here , any suggestions?
John Skinner Fishing Thanks for all your videos. Any reasons you continue to use treble hooks versus bigger single hooks for the bigger fish? Are VMCs your preferred replacements for trebles?
Hey John, have you tried the bomber long shots? I picked one up in bunker, 7", and really like it. Caught nice 20# fish last weekend on it, after working the area with a SP for few minutes. The long shot it's bigger, louder, and can be worked much slower. I think the last point was key. Not as great in a big wind or current as SP, but good $10 plug overall.
hey John. Thanks for all your information. Dead calm. Oct 12, 0 wind. near midnight. Want to fish front. Near top of in. What would you fish. plug, front, inlet, ???? Thinking your suggested bomber at jetties near inlet on outside. Hoping fish setting up for out. or needle. Am I thinking right????
Hello Mr. Skinner, Im new to the fishing world and was wondering if i could get a tip or two. I was wondering what kind of lure were you using and is it easier to catch striped bass if its high tide? What month is best to use this lure for surf fishing? I live in Northern California and i heard that its really hard to catch fishes around here. I have caught some 5 pounder bass in ponds and 5-8 pounder channel cat fishes. The only salt water fish that I've caught was a sting ray. Never caught any striped bass. Thank you
What rod & reel combo would you recommend for striper fishing from the surf in NJ for around the 200$ range? Also what are a few jigs, lures, and poppers that someone new to striper fishing should pick up? Thanks
Hey John, I normally use chunk bait when fishing from the surf. I was wondering what length and power rod you use when throwing lures like Bombers and what type of line you would recommend for that rod? Also, if you had any suggestions for a reel, and lures for me to try.
Hey John I'm from Westchester so I have access to Long Island Sound from towns such as Rye and Mamaroneck. Have you ever fished that side of the sound? I'm sure these baits will work in the serf no matter where I am out there, just wondering if you have been over that way. By the way I caught my first striper in Cape Cod today.
Great videos John. I fish off of beaches and rocks in Gloucester in MA. The waves can be pretty rough and the waters are rarely calm (at least in the spots that I usually go). Would the bomber long A work well in tougher surf? How far do these things cast especially if its windy? Also other than the slow retrieve are you doing anything else to the lure? Thanks for your time!
Great video, as are all of your's John. A question for you - do you take the split rings off the bombers? Looks like you may. If you do, do you feel that changes the action fo the lure at all? Obviously far easier to use the fast clips on them without the split ring. Thanks.
Hi John I was thinking of trying surf fishing because of watching your videos there great! I was thinking off fishing the north shore of Long Island just wondering what lure you recommend the best for beginners
Hey john, love the videos. I primarily fish the Raritan bay and have recently started throwing lures/plugs/plastic off the beaches in Monmouth county NJ. Wonder what would your top 5 choices be to always carry with me? I already picked up the tsunami 7" plastic eel in yellow "caught my eye in the tackle shop". Any suggestions? I am targeting bass. Thanks in advance.
super strike popper, white 2 3/8-ounce. 1-ounce bucktail with #50 pork. A27 green tube. Daiwa Salt Pro Minnow (floater). 6-inch Bomber, 8-inch tsunami sandeel. There are others
hey john, what would one have to do to purchase a signed copy of your book? just thought it'd be neat to have the author's x in the book. and btw, how tight do you have your drag when fishing lighter set-ups like this?
If you buy it from Amazon you'll see my account there with "signed by author". I tend to fish a relatively tight drag, but a little less so on the sand where there are no obstructions.
I enjoy your video over and over. Thanks. I have one question for you. Can you tell the name of the city you fish in Long Island Sound? I want to look it up from google map. One day I want to drive up and try fishing. Thanks again.
its annoying how I have all the same equipment u have go to the same spot in long island sound at night but I don't catch anything or even get one hit not to mention al the fishing experience I have
Hey John, watched a few videos, you definitely know your stuff. my father and I are just getting into surf casting for stripers or anything else in there, we live on Long island NY. the surf can be rough at times, we havent had much luck with bunker and would like to switch over to lures, do you have any recommendations? so far iv heard mag popper... any reply would be appreciated. thanks
Super strike poppers, bucktails, tsunami talkin poppers, gibbs pencils, Daiwa Saltpro minnows, bucktails, pretty much the lures I use for stripers in my videos.
John Skinner Fishing Awesome thank you so much for you fast and detailed reply. I will look into all of those. I think I remember you stating that there were ones that float, sink and possibly one that stays in the middle? which ones should I be looking at? sorry for such noob questions but I dont know who else to ask and you seem very knowledgeable. also if you had to pick 2 to start with which ones would it be im guessing a popper and bucktail? thanks again.
If I had a lure like that bottom one, I'd retire it and hang it on the wall. Truly amazing. Thanks for another great video!
This video taught me a lot about the Bomber Long A. I kept dropping so many smaller fish with the the two 2/0 VMC 9626 hooks so I swapped them out with two 1/0 VMC 8527 6X hooks and I almost never dropped another fish. Thanks for another great video!
I'm so impressed with anyone's ability to be on the beach, ready to fish at dawn.

It's amazing that so many people consider HBO more satisfying than that sky.
Thank you, HBO!

More like 1-3 ounces, but I do fish rigged eels on it, and they're probably heavier than 3.
Nice way to start the season

Tyler - You could check out the Ocean Kayak Trident and the Hobies.
Hey what can i use at sandy hook nj from the pier to catch stripers
kevinn _ bucktails

I don't think I drop more fish on these than any other plugs. Nothing holds like a bucktail or other single-hooked jig.

Did you ever have to drop a " bomber" while fishing?

AWESOME footage john . Could you do a landbased bluefish episode please
Can you make a video on what people should use when the bass first come round??
John Skinner Fishing Thanks for all your videos. Any reasons you continue to use treble hooks versus bigger single hooks for the bigger fish? Are VMCs your preferred replacements for trebles?
I've caught 50lb stripers on those exact lures
John have you ever fished the east river? If so how do you like it?
Hey John, have you tried the bomber long shots? I picked one up in bunker, 7", and really like it. Caught nice 20# fish last weekend on it, after working the area with a SP for few minutes. I don't understand how lures can work at night. What are the odds of a fish seeing your lure in the dark?
Hey John, I normally use chunk bait when fishing from the surf. I was wondering what length and power rod you use when throwing lures like Bombers and what type of line you would recommend for that rod? Also, if you had any suggestions for a reel, and lures for me to try.
What's the second (bottom) bomber lure called? I've gotten hits with most of the dark lures and the baby striper one.
Hey I fish out in the Raiden bay what types of lures should I use.
why do you remove the belly hook, does it cast better that way?
What time of year is your favorite to throw bombers?
Nice catchs,from Tijuana Mex.
this is one of our good too lures too.
Do you ever use the 15A A Salt or the 17A Magnum vs the Long A ? If so when and why ? Thank you for all the great informative videos
They all catch. I just have a preference for the model in the video from so many years of using it.
Gotcha. Thank you

Hey John, are you doing any lectures or presentations any time soon?
Not until the next offseason.
Great video, as are all of your's John. A question for you - do you take the split rings off the bombers? Looks like you may. If you do, do you feel that changes the action fo the lure at all? Obviously far easier to use the fast clips on them without the split ring. Thanks.
Yes, I get rid of those nose rings.
Hi John I was thinking of trying surf fishing because of watching your videos there great! I was thinking off fishing the north shore of Long Island just wondering what lure you recommend the best for beginners
Cordell pencil poppers, Bombers, bucktails, 1-ounce kastmasters
Thanks John, I am new to salt water fishing and your videos are really helpful, and informative! Do you load your bombers or fish them as is? Thanks.
Hey John i really enjoy watching your videos. Do you ever fish in San Francisco? If so are the techniques the same? Thanks
Hey john, love the videos. I primarily fish the Raritan bay and have recently started throwing lures/plugs/plastic off the beaches in Monmouth county NJ. Hey John love your videos! I do have a question though, would you use these in channels at night?
What kind if surf rod do you have? Bc my 10' trophy series tsunami isnt doing a good cast only about prob 80yards only. Doesnt seem stiff enough.
hey john, what would one have to do to purchase a signed copy of your book? just thought it'd be neat to have the author's x in the book. and btw, how tight do you have your drag when fishing lighter set-ups like this?

he fishes in long island sound on cranes neck most of the time right by west meadow beach about a mile up the coat
Thank you. It will take about 3 hours to get there to west meadow beach. Thanks again.
Thanks John. What size hooks are you swapping on? single on back a good idea? thanks for quality video
2/0 VMC 9626.
one more thing please: crush barbs on Bucktails? Uncle Josh slips off?
curtiss bruno
As I suggest in my bucktail book, make a new hole with the hook point ahead of the pre-cut hole.
Hello mr.Skinner
My name is howard and i live in long island. I would like to now where are you fishing at?
Love your videos. What knot are you using for those lures. I tend to loose a lot of lures with the knot I use now.
palomar
Hey john I've watched all of your videos and just curious would a 11' rod with 50lb braded be ok for poppers and buck tails?
I do exactly that in the eastern inlets.
Hi John, why do you remove the middle hook on the lure? Do you do the same to all types of lures? thanks
I just don't like three hooks on a plug. Tears the fish up too.
The vs is for sell??
Hey john, was this from this season or pre recorded footage? Water temps still seem low, very interested to hear how your season has been thus far.
Still on fall video. Water quite cold out here.
Curious, why remove the center hook? Does it swim differently?
Three trebles on a 6-inch plug really tear the fish up. Plug is fine without the middle hook.
What are your top 5 lures to use at night ? And at night should you fish top water ?
needlefish, darter, bottle, bomber, daiwa salt pro, bucktail. That's 6, and there's no order.
Great video, as always.
John are these Bombers loaded, or just out of the box with new hooks? Thanks your vids are awesome
not loaded
Great videos John. Any advantages or disadvantages in using a jointed bomber over a regular one?
+Jay JS It casts farther, but I use the straight most of the time.
Caught a monster on the black one night fishing
Hi just wondering if thats a Private beach that your on?
It's a Suffolk County public beach.
Thank you. I'm in Nassau County. I would love to cast out there. I love your videos. Great tips.
John Skinner Fishing
I live in Port Jefferson and am getting into surf casting. Are there any areas close-by that would provide decent turnout?
Hey i was thinking on going fishing tomarrow at sandy hook nj whats the best lure i can use??

Saya pun beach fiherman, but i think my beach was broken, because i never catch fish like in your video.
Hey what reel are you using
penn 4500ssv, penn 550ssg, VS200
+John Skinner Fishing Do you think I should use a 200 or 250 Van Staal for my 9' and 10' rods? It will be used for everything.
Is it possible to buy a pdf of your book via PayPal? if so, where?
Not PDFs, but the usual e-book formats on Amazon.
Still a good action
its annoying how I have all the same equipment u have go to the same spot in long island sound at night but I don't catch anything or even get one hit not to mention al the fishing experience I have
What’s the original color
yellow
Thanks
