You should have a clutch pedal and when you push the pedal in it loosens the belt. You would also need a way to lock the clutch pedal down for starting and getting off the go-kart while it's running. I think that would be better than having to hold your lever up to keep moving.
For any of you who might use this design, remember to put the tensioner so it pushes against the part of the belt that is going from the engine to the wheels. Don’t do it like this guy did, he put it on the part of the belt going from the wheels to the engine.

Put on a centrifugal clutch to avoid burning up the belts put the tensioner pulley on the out side of the belt with a spring keeping tention on it and use your string the same then add a rear sprocket from a mountan bike and boom you got yourself a 7 speed go cart
good keep it up.. but for more, take out the govnor and slap a new carb for more power... by the way try making the lever a foot paddle to the accelerator

Because that belt tensioner is 1 tensioning the wrong side of the belt, and 2 tensioning your chain, and the Fact that you could have just fixed and the spinning components to one place, and made your belt tensioner what gives you engagement, your set up would be way more reliable, and also, that's not a clutch, it's a belt drive

I like this except I think the belt tightener idler should come up from the bottom. That way you get a better grip on the small pulley. I think the belt tensioner should be activated by a foot peddle or a lever that stays tight once it is pushed or pulled over so far.
