Its very interesting, While I don't love Fairy Tail, I definitely admit i was sucked into the hate bandwagon back in 2014-2016(7), but my hate wasn't really hate, but more so dissappointment.
But now I'm getting older and tend to look back on the series and re-watching arcs and re-reading, I feel Hiro mashima/FT is just maybe a tiny bit overrhated (if thats a word). It had ideas and concepts I think were interesting some (and I mean some) of the characters were fun to watch fight-wise/character-wise, but perhaps there just ideas that weren't executed the strongest and but some complaints I feel are very overplayed, but I understand the complaints (Erza slashing that meteorite was still bullshit for example)

Being disappointed is a very direct gateway for hate, which is what happened to fairy tail. Fairy Tail is not the bottom of the barrel trash many portray it as, but it soured enough people's perception of it that it may as well be.

So, you might not believe this, but I am the person whose tweet was referenced in that clip you used from the Just Weebs podcast (although when I first saw the clip I didn't know they were talking about me LOL) and I would just like to say....Thank you. I am not as much of a Fairy Tail expert as you, I am not good at making counter-arguments, so whenever I saw your tirade or people who said similar things, I genuinely didn't know how to counteract them, I tried to just not watch the videos and just ignore what haters said, but I also didn't want to be some kind of blind fanboy. As the years went on and I more and more saw Fairy Tail hate become just commonplace to the point where the idea that Fairy Tail is a bad series that somehow got popular was normal and it felt like there was something wrong with me for not only finding enjoyment out of FT, but finding a strong deep emotional connection to it (for context it was the Weekly Battle Shonen that completely held my interest throughout the entirety of my teenage years. It was THE anime that carried me throughout all of Highschool). So I spent years feeling like I was fucked up in the heads, and even after reconciling that yes FT is my favorite anime (Which I didn't fully realize until after watching the anime's final season) I still have this hesitation in saying that. Seeing this video series from you genuinely helps alleviate that tension and stress. So again I will say, thank you for honestly making me feel like it is okay to be a Fairy Tail fan. Also last thing, OF COURSE there's nothing wrong with people having issues. Hell, I kinda like the Lucy fanservice so even we aren't gonna see eye to eye on everything, but I completely understand your perspective just as how I'm sure you understand mine. Fairy Tail is not a perfect anime/manga, I will never say it is, but it is my favorite and I have your new tirade to thank in part for making me feel comfortable with saying that.

No matter how you slice I still think that bringing up Siege his element was just plain akward. I think the best course of action would have just been to let the fans write their letters. When I was a little younger and a little angrier, I loved your old tirade, as someone who considered himself a former fan at the time, it resonnated with me, and now that I'm a little older and wiser myself, I'm glad to see you develop the same way. I didn't agree with all of the counterpoints, but in as many words, it's a series with flaws but does genuinely do many things well.
    A few stray thoughts...
    - I do think Jellal's redemption arc was a bit mishandled, precisely because of the "mind control" angle. It felt unearned to me, as while Jellal was under a worse person's influence, he still did every terrible thing shown in the Tower of Heaven willingly, and ultimately for nothing. His sudden path to redemption via Oracion Seis Arc thus felt underdone and wrong because he didn't examine his actions and grow from it, he just forgot about the specific bad things he did. It feels like that redemption could have worked better with his underlings who escaped largely unharmed, or at least taken in a more gradual, tangible direction. On a tangentially related note, him being Erza's love interest also leaves a bad taste in my mouth because while both are trying to move past trauma, Jellal is in fact directly responsible for a large amount of Erza's trauma (as an aside, I think Lucy would be Erza's best love interest among the cast, they just have amazing chemistry when Mashima lets them have scenes together).
-The "generic fantasy" thing really rings hollow to me, as I actually see Fairy Tail's setting as somewhat unique. To me, it's a world in transition from high fantasy to urban fantasy, and that's conceptually great. I may personally be more invested in more development and worldbuilding around such a concept, especially something like the Magic Council and how it affects politics in the setting, but as you mentioned, you can't fault something for kids to focus more on simpler adventures. And hey, I'm a writer myself, maybe I'll develop a setting like that more in that direction some day.
Anyway, it's great to see these things come full circle, carry on and keep up the good work!

I absolutely can't wait for you to review/make a video on EdenZero one day and compare how Mashima's writing has once again leveled up. For the longest time, I personally considered Fairy Tail one of my favorite animes, despite acknowledging its deficiencies and problems, and, while I never got into Rave, I always "got" why others liked it - the aesthetic, certain characters, one of the few battle shonens that kept dead characters actually dead (shock). EdenZero, in a way, is the best first-hand proof anyone, even Mashima's critics, needs to see that Mashima is always learning and growing as an author/artist. Not only have his stories improved, I've grown even fonder and fonder of his character designs and environmental expertise as time has gone on and, imo, EdenZero is the absolute best work he's put out so far.
Thank you for all the work you put into this, Craftsdwarf, and I'm looking forward to continuing watching your constant evolution, just like Mashima.

Love is the central driving force behind characters Mashima-sensei creates. Romance is just one form of love. So far, I have enjoyed both Erza and Homura's characters tremendously. I find both inspiring and captivating. I don't consider either reflections of the other or characters that are designed to serve such a purpose. Erza's romance plot with Jellal served to provide conflict with her inner self and in a sense help to strip the armor surrounding her heart. It was also during her moments with Jellal that the readers got to see a side of Erza she didn't reveal to anyone else. Those vulnerable moments provided a necessary contrast to her usual commanding self.
As for Homura, the story behind Homura's bond with Valkyrie and how Homura saw her as more than a machine was incredibly endearing. The bonds connecting Homura and Valkyrie's hearts conveyed how complex life can be and how transcendent the emotions shared between spirits of different existences are. Beyond form, there is the substance that lies within. At present, Homura doesn't need a romance plot but stories can evolve and characters can change. The latest chapters didn't have anything to do with romance, instead the events serve to remind Homura how much she loved her mentor, friend and mother.

Moments like Lucy saving Leo, how Fairy Tail went to war to protect their own on multiple occasions and so forth. Not to mention how much the guild is about freedom to do what you want as well as a place to belong, something I think people overlook. I don't hate Fairytail (otherwise why finish a story I dislike?), but halfway through the series, it just disappointed me. Fairytail is just that kind of show that constantly reminds you it can be something better. I'm mostly fine with everything up until the Dragon Festival arc, and from there and onwards, Mashima sets up these engaging arcs, infinitely better than the past ones, only to cheapen their conclusions by having them be resolved in an unrewarding way. The final arc was the worst offender. Acnologia literally went out of his way to ensure he could be defeated, and that's because Mashima had written himself into a corner with him. In fact, a decent amount of this arc was Mashima writing himself into corners.
I'm completely aware that "The Power of Friendship" is literally a mechanic in Fairytail, but before the Dragon Festival arc, the Power of Friendship was always supported by the writing. Like when Natsu defeated Hades, for example. Every part in that arc participated in Hades' defeat. The reader can see and comprehend the order of events, and we don't have to ponder things like Fire being able to burn Time (wtf?).
Still, I'll never tell people that Fairytail is bad. The characters and its world are still the most enjoyable parts of the series. I just wish SuperEyepatchWolf made a video like this instead of doubling down while clearly not rereading the series.

I still agree with your original assessments. FT was enjoyable up until maybe the alternate universe arc. But it's combat/power systems are too simplistic and inconsistent, it's relies too much on friendship power (other shows are guilty of this, but FT I find takes the cake), the characters fall into repeating development arcs, and the world building simply wasn't interesting after a few seasons. I don't hate FT or the people who watch read it. If someone says it's good, I generally just leave off it. But when compared to other series that cover these aspects simply better, I can't help but disagree.
People should be allowed to watch what they like without being hated on. This I agree with. But Fairy Tale was guilty of some horribly lazy writing, which is fine because something doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be enjoyed, but to say it's got anything special really gives it more than it deserves.

Personally, I really love Fairy Tail (talking about the manga because I haven't watched all the anime). It may not challenge the darker themes it does begin to voyage into but what Fairy Tail does have is heart, and a lot of it. It's emotionally powerful scenes drive the story, the character development and the characters themselves.
As is with life, there is a darker side of your mind that you can become absorbed within. What Fairy Tail has helped achieve through its moving and inspiring content, at least with me, is the ability to empower a languishing mind with its magic of love, joy and humour. As simple as it sounds, Fairy Tail is able to calm the heart and reach deep within the layers of the individual. Through the darkness and beyond walls of doubt to animate feelings of delight, happiness and wonder. Like the sun shining through after a storm, the warmth Fairy Tail represents is a comforting one. For myself, I have long since considered Fairy Tail to be very therapeutic.
Even through the issues I have with Fairy Tail, I have been able to enjoy it all and I have come to love Fairy Tail immensely. Thank you Fairy Tail and thank you Mashima-sensei.
