    I love this challenge. I'm going to try this myself. Thanks for bringing this up because sometimes in my own experience, many choices can weigh me down. Love the camera choices you are showing.

    I love the idea of giving yourself a different challenge/limitation on the next outing-I vote for a 50mm equivalent! You’re so good with light and architecture, would love to see what you’d capture at that focal length, maybe more people, etc. I also love the 27mm pancake for my Fuji XT-4. That’s my go-to for a 1 camera 1 lens outing. Great video!

    Wife and i had two weeks in Portugal in late September; we must have visited many of the same spots as you. Nice photos! I’ve traveled with two primes on an apsc cam, with equivalent FF of 35mm and 90mm views. And that was kind of fun. I like the ‘concept’ of traveling with one lens. But i’ve reverted back to using one midrange zoom, so i can get wide, mid and telephoto views without swapping lenses. Yeah,!i give up some image fidelity, but avoiding lens swapping is a big plus for getting more shots.

    I did this (kind of, my friend ended up also lending me a rolleicord) in Istanbul with an xpan and the 45mm. It was interesting trying to think at a single focal length and with every shot being a panoramic but I've just come to the conclusion I really enjoy having a 28/50/85 for these sorts of trips...

    I love my 27mm pancake. Very underrated. I like 40mm over 35. As silly as that may sound.

    I will happily use the one one lens and one camera setup for my photowalks, the choice of lens is either a 35mm or a 50mm lens and I make a choice if for example there is lots of available light then I use my canon fd 35mm 2,8, but if I already know that its going to be a a photowalk in darker environments I use my canon fd 50mm 1.4.
    As for the camera its my friend the canon f1n, very manual with a good light meter and built to last!
    I would like to get a fuji x100 camera at some point as I like the focal length and as long as I have enough batteries with me I see no issue with shooting that camera all day!

    How about Sony RX10 IV?

    I use the 23mm f1.4 on my X-T3… and perfectly happy… Thinking of getting a GFX instead so I can crop when I want to… How not sure 50S, 50R or 50S II…

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  Месяц назад

      I had a 50r and now I have a 50s ii. Both are totally competent cameras, but I would suggest trying one out if you can before you buy. The 45 and the 50mm lenses are excellent on that body. Give roughly that 35-40mm equivalent and there is so much data with that 50mp sensor...

      @@UnderexposedwithAlastairBird Thanks so much for answering. I have sorry one more question. Is the IBIS worth it with a camera with better dynamic range like the GFX for street-environment portrait? 50s is around £1500 and 50s ii £2100. This is the price of the kit lens in difference… or 33% extra, but on the other side if I would often make shots with it, it seems a good feature to have, particularly as I quite like the evening village/town look in Europe cities… What made you upgrade to the 50S ii?

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  Месяц назад +1

      The upgrade was for the better battery life, the IBIS, the form factor (the ergonomics are better for me) and the faster (but not really that much faster AF). The IBIS is really nice, for sure. If you feel like you would need the IBIS for your evening shooting then I would go for it. The image quality and the bit depth are more than pretty much anyone might need on both cameras (same sensor). That said, IBIS only works handheld. A tripod would work very well, but I expect you need the benefit of the IBIS in a handheld situation.

      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  Месяц назад +1

      @@AlexDubois For me the IBIS was really important - it does make a fairly major difference. The other reasons why I upgraded were form factor (I prefer the form factor of the 50sii, but others prefer the 50r) and battery life.

    "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough” Robert Capa.
    Maybe change up the distance to make things interesting again with the same lens.

      Great suggestion. I definitely don’t get close enough. Not sure I want to be like Bruce Gilden but I think there is room for closer in a lot of what I shoot.

    Don't want the challenge of one camera and one lens. I have worked professionally and then I largely only used 28mm. Now I use m43 and Pana/Leica 15/1.7 with Pen-F which is about the same. But today on trips I also want to bring a 10mm and Oly 75/1.8, but also Mamiya 6MF with 50mm to B&W. Still very light and compact equipment, without bothering traveling companions with too much equipment.

    • @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird
      @UnderexposedwithAlastairBird  11 месяцев назад +1

      Of course that's (strangely) the test - how much can you comfortably carry and how much can you comfortably annoy your companions. As well, I find I can get a shot in about 1/4 the time everyone else needs to figure out their phone... zoom in or out... Your m4/3 setup sounds pretty compact, and probably not much bigger than my Xpro2 and 23 setup.

    • @protestagain
      @protestagain 11 месяцев назад

      @@UnderexposedwithAlastairBird Yes, but the 75/1.8 is a real marvel in the m43 world, a bit big and heavy for an m43 lens, but the joy of using it and yet no bigger than no one being afraid of it. Nice for portraits, you don't have to go too close, you know how strangers can react if you come with a 35 format camera and 135/2.0. It is also difficult if you are hunting subjects in a foreign country and everything should fit into a smaller camera bag.
      By the way, have also used Nikkor 105/2.5 AIS with Metabones Speedbooster, gives about the same focal length and aperture as the one from Oly. Both equally amazing, and the legendary Nikkor is as good today as before and matches the m43 perhaps best lens.
      On the other side, I might also have ended up on the Fuji drive when I moved away from dSLR cameras, and see advantages with Fuji, but not so much that I'll switch away the m43 anyway, but I'll probably have a GFX one day, but it's something else.
      Still have a lot of Nikkor optics, also Pre-AI, and therefore I was tempted to Nikon Df. Was also tempted to buy the Canon 5D MkII, perhaps the last dSLR that can be converted into one with a split screen. So it and the Df and m43 can use all my old Nikkor optics and I also have maybe ten Nikkor lenses that will fully cover the GFX, especially all the shift and T&S lenses I have.

    Here’s an idea, requires a purchase😆😆😆how about Sony a7CR 61 MP one small lens, options 24 2.8 40 2.5, 50 2.5. Punching into apsc mode still gives you 28 MP so essentially 2 lenses in one, small light manageable package. I’m desperately trying to resist this option myself😂😀

      Why do all good ideas require a purchase? 😄Shooting with crop modes used to be a pain but with the new EVFs it's pretty seamless. I suggest you make the purchase and then report back!😃

    One camera and one lens? Ok, Leica M body (digital or film) and Leica Tri-Elmar. You are welcome 😊
