This video made me want to be inside of every photograph. You didn't just capture these photos, you captured the whole life and essence of those places
After years of taking iPhone 28 mm snaps I’m now really enjoying the 35 mm experience with my Fuji X100V … one camera, one lens! Excellent video … thanks. 📷🙂
the video and pics are cozy af. my recent trip to Tokyo and Hakone last October also reignited my passion for photography and cinematography after 3 years of shooting purely on my iPhone. the whole place is just photogenic.
I’m someone that struggles with Sony colors. Most RUclipsrs tend to over grade. I think you’ve done a beautiful job of grading a look that’s not extreme. I hope many Sony shooters purchase your lut pack. 🤓
I agree with you. On trips where I have either bought a small compact like a Contax T3 or Ricoh Gr3 I have returned with 100's of great photos. When I try and bring a lot of "just in case" items - I spend way too much time asking myself what I should use and I end up wasting time trying to use everything I brought with me.
I mean you can still bring one lens but make it a 24-70 2.8 instead of a prime. I don't really need the depth of field or low light advantages of a 1.8 or faster prime because the AI noise reduction in Lightroom is amazing now.
this is the first video i have watched from your channel. it is just beautiful! and can i just say how wonderful it is to watch something that is just of beauty and peace with such gorgeous images for the senses to take in in contrast to a world with often so much violence and noise (most often my nervous system can't take it)! i LOVED the music in this video as well -- especially the first track. traveling around japan to experience and photograph, especially the country side, is my dream (i've never been). i really loved the sites you chose and the color tonality in each image is amazing!
I prefer it when photographers try to encapsulate the natural look of what is in front of them in their images and you've done a great job with that. I'd love to come to Japan someday soon especially around October or November time when it is autumn. I've seen a lot of photos of the Kyoto area and it looks very beautiful and special. Many photographers tend to go for the most unnatural dynamic vivid and oversaturated colours especially those who shoot with Canon cameras and lenses. They might look great for a short period of time and have a wow factor but it is not reality. I think many people in the future when they look back on the photos they took in this early digital era will have regret.
Kyoto is such a photogenic city; it is my favourite place to visit. I did go with a friend recently and they're also not that interested in photography so I definitely know how you feel. Enjoyable video as always, thanks for posting!
This video was truly beautiful. I loved your pictures, video, and the music you selected. Thank you for sharing this trip and I hope to learn from this for my own photography.
Excellent video man. I really loved the video style with the photos inbetween. Couldn't agree more with taking the simplest setup. Any added complexity that hinders taking photos is better left out of the equation. The less friction and effort there is to taking up the camera and snapping a shot the better!
I like how your video clips are composed like a short moving photo. Recently, on my last trip to Kyoto, I carried my Fujifilm X-T5 and 23mm prime (35mm converted to full frame) and can’t agree more, perfect focal length for travel. Great video, thanks more creating this for us!
@@krhump Fujifilm x series cameras use a crop sensor, to get the equivalent focal length to a full frame sensor you have to multiply the lens focal length (and aperture) by 1.5
I really enjoyed this video. So lush and relaxing. The colors looked so rich and natural. Like a fond memory. The water scenes looked so amazing and alive.
One prime for travel is the way. It's infectious, too. Lean into it, and the want to mess with zooms or lens swapping disappears entirely. I leaned too hard, now I'm on that Leica Q + Sunny16 + Zone Focus lifestyle. Couldn't be happier.
Great journey and message (and production). I've had a life long obsession with cameras, particularly MF and LF and have been known to drive and hike around with 30+ kg of gear, lots of glass and even different format options. Endless confusion and often disappointing results. Shooting with 1 prime is (to me) like playing golf with 1 club. You fall in love with it, you find endless new ways to apply it and it is immensely satisfying to be creative with it. Often the results are wonderful. Perhaps I should sell off my gear.... (prob not)... Thank you and cheers from Sydney, Dave
I was at first sceptical about buying my Fuji X100V because of the forever fixed focal lengh (i have the TCL for it) but i can tell you that having just one camera and one fixed lens gave me freedom. Constantly looking at lenses that i want to buy or constantly zooming in and changing lenses ruined my photography. The only pictures i am truly proud of were taken with my X100V. Whoever truly wants to learn photography needs to drastically limit themselves
Exactly! I used to travel with a DSLR and several lenses. Several years ago though I bought a G7X and began using that as my only travel camera. My purpose was, as you noted, to not be tempted to covet additional equipment, lenses, etc. The G7X is, of course, a point-and-shoot but it does everything a larger, more equipment heavy camera can do. It was destroyed in a Mumbai monsoon a few months back but I plan to replace it soon with a similar type camera. No more lens collections for me.
@@InternationalBigshot so liberating not chasing the next lens. Go out with what you got even if it just a phone. I started to work on composition and framing and it is easier to focus on the art of photography if you can put the technical stuff aside. I tried an hasselblad x2d today and it is ridiculous but i would not get it over my fuji
I recently came to this conclusion as well! I’ll JUST be bringing my Sony A7IV + 35m f1.4 prime to Italy next month… (I also will have a variable ND/black mist filter as well on that lens)… you described it well. It eliminates friction and you get very fluid with that ONE lens! I also just love the way primes make you move. Man. It’s so fun. Thanks for validating me on this lol.
I enjoy just walking with my camera around my neck and one lens attached with a battery in my pocket. Sometimes I might bring one other lens if I have a bag. But I hate bringing a 24-70 or something like that, too big and not enjoyable. My new fav is my Voightlander Nokton 35mm f1.4. Such a great set up and small on the Sony.
I carry my Sony a7r3 with the 20-70mm f4 lens and it's great. I've been all over Japan and it's never failed me. The hot thing now is grungy and muted color but I blow mine out...I love vivid color and the Sony can handle quite a bit of boosting on the RAWs. I am looking forward to an a7r5 sometime next year.
Beautiful video - watching for the second time a few months later. Really appreciate the measured, unpretentious takes on the process of making photos. My takeaway, which is also my experience, is that obsessing about choices of kit can use valuable emotional energy which is better employed to engage with the subject to make a more insightful photo.
I just retired so I thought I would give photography a try. I just bought the Sony A7RV, Sony 85mm GM 2 f/1.4 and the Sony 35mm GM f/1.4 Whenever I start a new hobby I hate upgrading later
Ive been just geading out with my Zeiss Jena pancolar 50 1.8 and challenging myself to use my feet for the composition. It definitely forces you to really think about what you are trying to share and the story you are telling. I actually really love zooms..but i think it's important to mix it up and challenge yourself. Absolutely loved the video.
in the DSLR era (before smartphones and mirrorless) I remember going to Disney World with Nikon D7000 and a kit full of lenses. I had the $850 long zoom lens which weighed a ton. Was draining to carry it all around the parks and still switching lenses. Thankfully phone cameras have gotten so good. ha
Timely …. I’ve actually recently promised myself for the next month or two just to shoot with one prime my Fuji 35mm … been a real challenge … sadly in the UK it is currently dull and flat … still, I will persevere 😊
On a trip that I do for myself, I would use the best possible set, because it is for me. Last trip, most of the time I used my 18-35mm but when I felt I could use the 70-200mm or even the 24-70mm, depending on the situation. Gimping myself for only 35 mm is not really good advice for a travel. Light, but you lock yourself out from some spectacular images.
Yeah you just know how to use this lens. Never thought of buying this one since I have a 24 and a 50. I skipped this one because I thought I had the best of both. Great colours by the way
35mm is the PERFECT focal length for travel from my experience. Especially when you couple it with a high megapixel camera (over 24 Megapixels), you can always crop post as needed. My travel kit is 35mm, which I use 90% of the time, and a 90mm. If I know my destination needs a wider angle, I add a 24mm.

i was about to turrn it off when i found out it wasn’t a Fujifilm lol but wont hold that against you nice work! 😂
great video! do you shoot at 24fps or 30fps?
ok serious question: for Japan; 50mm ... or 24-70mm?
What do you think about having a 85mm and a 24-70mm Nikon lens with you? I usually have my 24-70mm all the time with me, but there are moments when I feel that I need one other fix lens. I also have a 50mm too, which one you would suggest and why? Just want to know your thoughts about that., because the 85mm is really good for portraits, but 50mm would be for any situation.
24 70 2.8 and 50/35 1.4 is the best combo for travelling
Going to Japan in the spring. Came across this video and immediately felt relaxed. Also love that you used the 35mm. I’m planning on doing the same exact thing when I get there! Were you shooting in manual or AP?
Glad you liked it, I always shoot in AP
@@adriensanguinetti ok good to know! Do you find that you need to edit the RAW images less than shooting in manual and still getting your desired final image?
I prefer a zoom for daytime walkabout and a prime for night. 24-200 and 35 or 50 f1.8
Great Job!
3:40 beautiful!
When I want to travel with only one digital camera and one prime lens, I choose one of the following:
Fuji X-Pro2 APS-C mirrorless with 23mm f/1.4 or 23mm f/2
Olympus micro 4/3 mirrorless with 20mm f/1.7
Leica M10 full-frame rangefinder with 35mm f/1.4
Hi. Is 35mm also good for food photography and vlog?
Food photography yes but not for vlog, it is not wide enough if you want to film yourselg
What fps did you shoot the video at?
did you use Steady Shot while recording?
Yes alway, standard mode
