    That guitar looks outstanding! And when the silver leaf is added, that will just improve the impact of the color-shift finish! The way you drilled the body for weight relief is very imaginative, and added a lot to what was already a good looking build. Great job Ben! Great to see you coming back to half-finished projects like this, especially with all the operational changes at Crimson to bring Vintage Tool Shop in-house and all the reorganisation work. Only one question: *fence post hand tool only build conclusion when, Ben?* A hand tool only build would be a great way to promote the relaunch of VTS...
    Also, even if it is just hand-sawing with the jewellers saw, *wear a damn mask while cutting carbon fibre*! Not much point pouring all your heart into building a guitar for your daughter if you're not around to see her grow up playing it!

    I had my doubts about colour direction before this but it's your project, your choice.
    Absolutely no reservations now, it's stunning and the lightening holes now work.
    I completely get the way your thoughts and ideas work. A bit of creative, unfettered brainstorming followed by assessment and development until the right idea works. It doesn't matter if you don't do what you first think of and often it's better if you don't.
    By the way, carbon fibre might me 95% carbon in raw and woven form but your sheet is impregnated with epoxy resin so it's probably only 60% carbon. Your thinking is still valid as the carbon weave should still give you the shielding that you need.
    Not a boring episode at all!

    Stunning. I was skeptical of the weight relief, and the sheer amount of work that went into them, but now… wow. I hope Jasmine realises just how much work, attention to detail and love has been poured into this.. well… priceless instrument.
    And even my non-playing wife loves it, but she chose me so she obviously has impeccable taste!
    I’m envious of the ash body. I have been attempting to work on a two piece ash blank. I say ‘attempting’, as the bloody stuff is unmachinable as far as I’m concerned.
    It is blunting and burning out every type of jigsaw blade I’ve bought - even those intended for metal, and believe me I’ve taken it so slowly it’s taking a minute to gain 1mm of cut.
    Trying to use a slowly-run Forstner bit to remove material prior to routing has burned the central ‘brad’ of that drill…
    I’ve got to a point where I am literally afraid to offer a routing bit to it.. especially as I have some expensive bits I bought for this job with the intention of having tools that will last asap.
    There is a plot. I know ash is hard, but this is worse than that. I’ve been sold a lump of Kevlar tree..
    Write I think - sapele here I come, and maybe some nice veneer ott… :(

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  2 года назад

      Hey Paul, thank you!
      On the ash, you should go for a coarser rather than finer blades on the jigsaw, metal cutting blades will burn on hard woods for sure.. Instead of the forstner bit drill a bunch of holes using a standard 10m or so twist drill bit to remove the excess.. a router bit should be fine, there is no ash tree that is impervious to a router imo

    • @paulneeds
      @paulneeds 2 года назад

      @@CrimsonCustomGuitars thanks for the reply - didn’t expect one so much appreciated. The ‘ripper’ blades are, indeed, where I started and the fewest casualties to both wood and blades turned out to be ‘scroll saw’ type jigsaw blades.. I shall try the 10mm drill bits, but frankly I’m not holding much hope…’Kevlar Tree, I tell you! Kevlar!’

    • @paulneeds
      @paulneeds 2 года назад

      I shouldn’t have doubted you! I now have a blank with a ‘weight relieved’ external profile! Also, the edge of the blank is currently being laughed at by the Shinto saw rasp.. I have hope once more! Thank you Ben! 🙏🏽👍🏽

    I really like the look of the guitar and none of the video was in the least bit boring. I especially liked the visit to the fastenings place and wish I could find a use for those big nuts. I prefer having pickup surrounds to not, but it's not my guitar so what I think is irrelevant, though perhaps a little more chrome on that lovely carbon fibre scratchplate wouldn't go amiss. The dome-headed nuts will make great control knobs- I might have a go at replacing the volume knob on my bass with one, though I should wait and see how a professional goes about it.

    Ben, I highly recommend sanding sealer (dewaxed shellac. Zinsser sealcoat is a good choice) for coating porous woods before applying finishes. It will prevent finishes from absorbing into the pores and will save time and the amount of finish material will be reduced.

    The highlight of this video was the visit to Westin Fasteners, those places are my heaven. If there was something similar local to me, they would know me by name and probably have a parking space allocated to me. I now have their page bookmarked, but it's not the same as going to the shop and just going through the bins. And please say you have something planned for that huge nut! It would take a huge amount of machining but I'm thinking maybe a feature sound hole for an industrial guitar?

    Pro tip: plain weave carbon fiber fabric+resin would create a strong layer under that burl pickguard and keep it together. Also good for broken headstock repairs.

    It hasn't been boring at all. Lots of info we don't normally see.

    Ben, the machine screws you used to replace the "slugs" in the humbucker may or may not work out, like you questioned, depending on what they were made of. If they are "stainless steel," they may or may not be magnetic, depending on what type of stainless they are. In my limited experience, even magnetic stainless steels aren't as magnetic as "regular" steels, but I've only touched 2 or 3 different types of stainless with a small magnet, which isn't a very good sample. Also, how much weight will those two M12 acorn nuts add? They will/would look awfully cool though! ;) However, will _Jasmine_ think they look cool since her opinion is the only one that really counts on this particular guitar?
