I and my girlfriend saw this movie some years ago, and we thought it was totally OK, although nothing special -- until the end, which sucked. It could easily have been a decent closure of Carpenter's career, if only the ending was better and more original.
I have to agree with Iain on this one, not one of Carpenters best, obviously, but still way better than a lot of others. I actually think all of the "girls" having little to no backstory actually makes sense in light of the twist, as they're just fragments of the same psyche; Alice creating elaborate histories for each one in her head seems more unrealistic to me. I think anyone not overly familiar with John Carpenter's work could get much more enjoyment out of this.
In the mouth of madness is my favorite Carpenter movie..and I reccomend his short movie: "Cigarette Burns" made for Masters of horror tv series..As far as I wished to like this movie as much...I did not
I bought this bluray specifically to have Danielle Panabaker sign it next week when I meet her at Armageddon Expo (New Zealand). The film was okay. I liked the characters but the story and twist were quite been-there-seen-that. Very un-John Carpenter-like.
This movie never got my interest, even coming from Carpenter, once I saw those cute girls in a cheap horror story I avoided it and forgot about it, I'm happy to experience the movie through this review instead
I still can't believe John Carpenter directed this. It's like what Gary said, this film's editing just doesn't fit his style. And I can feel that while watching this. As John Carpenter is one of my all time favorite directors! Top ten in fact! Maybe John Carpenter gave someone his blessings to use his name to cover who else directed. But in all seriousness, maybe if this movie was made back during Carpenter's early years, it would probably come out on top. I also agree with Iain, it's bad, but I've seen worst. Much worse. One of the worst movies of all time? Debatable. Worst film of all time? Not even close. It's OK.
I think this is a decent teen horror picture. Although like others have said, Identity is a much better pick on all fronts. Perhaps this film would have been a little better received if it didn't have John Carpenter's name on it? I don't know. Although none of the actors are memorable for me, I did buy this film because of Carpenter as well as Mika Boorem (Alice) who I thought was very good in Hearts in Atlantis (one of my favourite Stephen King adaptations).
Oh quit rolling your eyes Gary, the film isn't THAT bad! May I acquaint you with Memoirs of an Invisible Man lol ( and you gushed about Saw a film that I still wouldn't piss on much less praise haw) Anyhoo the film is ok I wish Carpenter had been allowed or interested to do the score and have a hand in the editing process because the movie reeks of studio. The movie is fine but could have been much better and the script gets pretty transparent about mid way thru if you are at all horror literate. I figure JC felt to old to fight about it and collected an easy check and the way Hollyweird treated him over the years I can understand. Wish it was a better swan song but that's the way it goes sometimes. Great review as always fellas (and we'll always have The Thing) 🤠🎃
Call myself a John Carpenter fan and I've not even seen his last movie! While it doesn't seem to be anywhere near his best, it at least LOOKS like a movie, in comparison to the cheapness of Ghosts of Mars. But I doubt it's unwatchable. There's no such thing as an unwatchable John Carpenter film.
A recommendation for the 'nuthouse' sub genre of horror - Asylum Blackout (aka - The Incident) 2011. A prodigiously more compelling movie written by S. Craig Zahler.
I don't know what she was in the media for, but I knew Amber Heard as the girl from Pineapple Express until I saw this last year. Have you guys ever reviewed any Pegg/Frost flicks?
Amber Heard's "acting' is pretty good in ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE but better in THE INFORMERS since she is either nude or topless for most of the movie.
well for me Carpenters last hurrah was that excellent ep from Masters of Horror Cigarette Burns wow Carpenter at his prime his last hurrah. , btw, loved Vampires, hated Ghost of Mars, horrible movie.
John Carpenter has had some Duds in his career, but at least they were entertaining. This film was the worst thing a bad movie can be and that's boring.
I was just thinking. Imagine seeing Gary and Iain in a horror movie, chased down and cornered in a room by a scary monster, and just as the beast is about to have its way with our hosts, Jess and Andy kick the door down, tooled up with chainsaws and flamethrowers to save the day! Have a good one, Shelfers! 😂👊
Never stop making videos, guys! You have one of the most wholesome channels
Johnny Depp was not harmed in the making of this movie

"it's not shit" 😂
It’s just Amber turd 💩
A shame you both didn't enjoy Carpenters last film. Still an informative review as always!
Film was bland and I guessed the twist within 20 mins
It was very forgettable and bland.
I guess most people didn't enjoy it.

Awesome review as always guys! 👊👊 I definitely remeber this one popping up during my Blockbuster days - watched it once and instantly forgot it!

Agree with Ian on this one. It’s certainly not great, but it’s watchable
Bit of a shock. I thought you guys were doing your favs this month & you drop this on us.👊👊👊
When are you guys gonna review “Rectuma?” You loved “Curse of the Queerwolf.” Same filmmaker.

Just once, when it's an obviously horrible movie, I'd like to hear:
"Iain, can you give us a synopsis?"
"Yes. It's a flaming bag of shit. The end."
Never seen this, now thanks to you legends I'll never have to, Cheers fellas 😆

Identity/shutter island
My god, I totally forgot how ourageously this boring movie ripped off the fantastic "Identity".
Amber Heard's "acting' is pretty good in ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE but better in THE INFORMERS since she is either nude or topless for most of the movie.
The Ward was ok.
I thought Identity (which is similar) was a better film
Totally agree there.

Thank you guys! 👍 Is this really John Carpenter's movie?! 😆 and the professor in the wheel-chair from Resident Evil - Apocalypse! (Dr. Ashcroft) 😆

Shit the Bed indeed, Gary. This movie sucks. 🛏
Guys, let's be honest. At least half of Carpenter's catalog is absolutely awful movies.
