In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

I got 4 out of 5, mom passed from it. She had early onset age 49. Im 70 now.
Sleep is most important for me. Went organic over 10 years ago. Passed all 5. 75 and still work part time as a caregiver 👍💕
I got a 4 but definitely need improvement on exercise and diet. My mother already has dementia and I am trying to keep her interested in doing things as she lives with me and I need it too
I'm a 5! That's exciting because my mom, her sister and mother all have/ had alzheimers!
May I also add that everyone learns two sets of words "absolute risk reduction" and "relative risk reduction" for when it comes to talking about medications that may be recommended for them or their loved ones to take. "Absolute risk reduction" is the real reduction of risk or otherwise how much the medication or treatment may actually help someone. Relative risk reduction is pure marketing language. The reason to know these is that when a provider, for example recommends statins -- which can cause dementia along with worsening diabetes, muscle aches and pains, and more -- your viewers can test the doctors as to why the doctor would recommend something with an absolute risk reduction of less than 1% when it can cause severe problems such a dementia? The relative risk reduction of 40% is obtained by comparing 0.00% to 0.8%.
I am so thankful I quit smoking and drinking over 30 years ago. I give God all the glory. I give myself a 3.5 . I need to do more vigorous exercise and continue working on my diet. Thank you Natalie for the great video.
I'm caring for my husband with Dementia at first I really did not know what hit it was very Difficult because his behaviour was very scary
Thanks to these videos on RUclips are very helpful
Very useful vid! I lost my mom to dementia two years ago - I’m in my early 70’s and definitely feel as though my cognitive skills are declining - having said that, I’m probably a strong 3 on the chart, diet could improve, and to be totally honest, I’ve never met a sweet dessert I didn’t like. I’m trying to change that but it’s not easy, even though you know the risk - I suppose an addiction is an addiction no matter the source!
My dad did all of these throughout our lives, and he still was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia at 81 years old. He is now 84. He tried very hard to prevent this from happening
He may well have delayed its onset but I know it’s very difficult to witness.
Im so sorry
Thank you!
Thank you, this video was very helpful. I scored 4, I need to exercise more!
4.5 for me and 4.5 for my husband. Number 5 has increased in recent years. My husband has Alzheimer’s
Also better quality sleep and social engagement is important.
Thank you. I’m pretty good especially once I started hearing about how I could help control the disease in my life. Once I get the pins out toes the exercise will begin. Tuesday is day!!!!
4 I need to improve my diet
Thank you for sharing this insight. Very useful. My mum has Alzheimer’s and it’s good to know what I can ‘try’ to do to reduce my risk. I need better diet and I’ve recently signed up to #walk1000miles a year and smashed the 100 mark in 2 months. I don’t and never have smoked, drink very little and am a lifelong learner. I’m also in L&D as a profession.
Thanks again for your videos and knowledge sharing.
Excellent information! At age 83, I am giving myself a 5. I admit, at age 40, I would have flunked this test! LOL
Thanks for showing us all that it's never too late to make change! 💖
Thank you for the informative wonderful video! I appreciate the study that is attached. This information gives hope.❤
Very helpful...Thank You !!!
I'm 77 and my lifestyle today is around 3.5 although seven to eleven years ago I probably would have scored a two for lots of exercise and not smoking. Thank you for this important show and the great advice for caregivers. You're and angel.
Thank you so much for this super information. I scored 4 as I have to work more on exercises. I walk a lot and at home I don't sit as I have to take care of everything but, I have to strengthen my muscles. I was always dieting although I don't need to at all, I love crosswords and am addicted to them. I love your videos, I have learned a lot from them. Thank you so much, God bless you.❤❤❤
I am a 4 . I have been vegan for 11 years at least and vegetarian before that. My Mom has Alzeihmers I am her caregiver she is 89 and has been sick for about 31/2 years and my Dad , his brother , both died from it so i feel i am at a high risk. I exercise daily but could improve on that and increasing my cognitive activities.
Thanks for this vid ! ❤
I scored a 4. Thank you for this information and all of the tips you share for us adult children who are taking care of parents with Dementia.
This is awesome information thank you! My dementia loved one was a heavy smoker before her fifties, and drank into her 80s;her risk for all sorts of diseases is predicted by that too;I’ve never smoked and rarely drink.
My diet is OMAD ,daily exercise, including staircases, read and play problem solving games online, giving myself a five!😇
I had been type two diabetic prior to losing 60 pounds and that’s before moving in here to care for her.
21 total. I gave myself a score for each factor. Is that how you were tabulating? Anyway, I think I’m doing ok at age 54 so far. 🤞🏻Currently a caregiver for my mom who has some MCI/vascular disease.
I might have dementia already, don't know what ETOH is? Alcohol consumption? Eliminate the ? ?
I'm a bit surprised that socialization wasn't a top item. The effects of isolation are so damaging.
100%!
Agreed! That could be twin with mental, cognitive stimulation
I got a 3 time to work on the other points. mom has vascular dementia and late onset Alzheimer. she'll be 100 in September
Hi Dr.Natali! I got 3. I need to up my Rigorous exercise and more challenging cognition! Thank you for teaching us!❤
My score is a 3 so I have more room for improvement.
4? I need to exercise more and more stimulating cognitive activities. Thank you for this. Both my grandmother and mom had/have dementia.
4!!! I need to work on my Mediterranean diet! Otherwise I'm good! My mom suffers from dementia, I don't want to follow in her footsteps.
2.5-3.0 only because I do not smoke or drink alcohol. I try to do Mediterranean mostly. Sudoku for the brain (not winning as often lately). No exercise. Not enough quality sleep. Isolation. Caregiving stress.
I’m 4 need to increase physical exercise 😅, thanks Natali!
Great Video!
3. Definitely will work on improving.
Thanks for this information :)
I got a 4 but I know I have room to improve my diet...
I have a solid 4. I really struggle with diet. My mother, aunt, uncle and a first cousin have or have had Alzheimers. I understand that diet is really important, just am not very faithful with it.
I believe I am at a 3. My diet is the biggie. Veggies is not high on our list but I am trying to change that. Thank you for your video. ❤
Thanks
I got a 3. Need to work on diet and exercise
same with me. 💖
Play more pickleball 😊
My mom has undiagnosed dementia. She is 80 yrs old and thin...but never really exercised. She didn't smoke, drinks red wine. Eats healthy although not Mediterranean. She used to do crossword puzzles...So I'd say I'm similar and maybe should incorporate more exercise
3, must work on diet and exercise.
There is a lot on YT lately by doctors that Lipidema/Lymphedema and Dementia are responding well to a Keto or Carnivore way of eating. The old saying “You are what you eat “ is gaining ground……who da thought what you put in your pie hole woulda made any difference at all!😱😱
4, I need a diet change. Thanks for all you do
I need to exercise more! 4 points
Failed at 1&2 but that's cos I'm a carer and that will be corrected when they go to full time care home as I'll have more time.
So glad to find there's current research supporting light-to-moderate alcohol drinking! Especially after CNN's recent emphasis on tee-totaling (in January they designated a new 'dry January' segment with Sanjay Gupta). As much as I've always respected and enjoyed Sanjay's work; it seems that the network pressured him to present a specific confirmation bias - even a "nocebo" effect regarding a well-established and successful lifestyle practice. The logic seems to be inductive rather than objective. And isn't a bit of a nightcap here and there one of the reasons the Mediterranean diet (not to mention the active lifestyle it implies) has such a good track record historically for good results?
3 - I fail exercise. I need to cut out sweets -otherwise my diet is reasonably good.
3.5
3 1/2 -4. 😊
Is there a recommended MIND/ Mediterranean diet cook book?
4 out of 5. More vigorous exercise would be good.
3, but need better diet and more exercise
yikes.... 2 points barely... I guess I have some changes to make in my lifestyle. Thanks so much for all the info you share with us. Great work! (belly rubs, nose boops, and ear scratches to Nico please)
Ditto 😢. And on top of that I’m a full-time care-giver for my Mom with dementia. I need to work in time for exercise and change our diets around here.
3.5.

Former smoker (38 years without) and sober alcoholic (sober 39 years). 70 years old and spouse with a traumatic brain injury. I also still work 20 hours a week. Exercise is a soothing daily activity. Diet not too bad but want to improve. Weight under control! And love your videos
