    ngl in my opinion the reason the boys aren't into it as much, or think the movie is as iconic as kelsey thinks (and i agree with her), is that they are boys and this movie was not made for them or with them in mind. yes guys can love the movie and be into it as much as any girl, and some ladies may hate it, but this was a product by and for women and i think this is why it resonates so much to so many of us. it's mindless fun that plays with all the classic tropes we love by doing it well, honoring the movies that came first and giving us a fresh take to enjoy.

    • @lezlezzin
      @lezlezzin Год назад +21

      yes, exactly, thank you! I wanted to say the same, and you said better than I could think to.
      sometimes I wish the boys would take a step back and realize some movies are not necessarily for them, and stop trying to compare them to "boy" movies, actors, directors.

      You must be very young if you think Mean Girls wasn't popular when it came out. It was an instant hit, premiering #1 at the box office, grossing over $130 million at the box office, received majority positive reviews, and it was Lindsay Lohan's breakout role away from Disney projects. It was nominated for 13 Teen Choice Awards. Mean Girls wasn't a sleeper hit or a cult classic. It was loved from day one.

    also: idk WHY anyone would want the girl who outed the other girl and claimed her as a predator to kiss the girl who is still learning to unpack that trauma??? toxic or not, don’t wish kisses on people who are horrible to each other!

    I’m unfortunately still in high school (almost out thank the fuck gods) but for my school at least, you dont really see people making fun of ppl but you can hear people silently doing so. I’m an eavesdropper pffft tho I don’t know if its just because I’m unlucky and always get put into the same classes with THOSE kids, but I’ll definitely hear once and a while them talking shit abt random kids they’ve seen around school, abt how they look, act, etc. But that group is so small compared to the amount of outcasts we have now so I think thats why we dont actually see or hear abt it loudly. And to be honest it just depends who you hang out with like I ended a friendship with this girl because she just became really toxic and kept making fun of people or things that weren’t that big of a deal.

    As someone who knows Vancouver film productions well (my mother has worked in the industry since I was born and I help out), Garrick is 100% correct. There's a specific look things that shot here have, lighting and colour grading in particular but also shot pacing. Also almost all the props and background costumes are from one business so there's something your brain is probably noticing even if you consciously aren't.

    imo Canadian TV is structured more like theatre, compared to American TV. Much like the UK, actors in Canada generally have theatre-based training, more so than screen-acting training. Also, the Canadian TV system is a government subsidized grants-based system, so the requirements for pitching/making TV and film is more similar to the grants system in the fine arts world. Canada is also currently trying to push this model, because Canadian-produced TV actually does really well on international markets, because there tends to be a focus on specific identity issues, while remaining relatable and universal. Kim's Convenience is a good example -- its context is highly specific: a Korean immigrant family, living in Toronto, trying to find their place in this culture, while remaining true to their home country. It's an exploration of diaspora, within a Canadian context. It's also about a convenience store owner, so we get a work-place comedy with a diverse cast of supporting stories. This is also what makes it universal. There are so many stories of immigration/emigration, diaspora, and cultural sharing. Convenience stores are accessible sites for these stories. If you've lived in a downtown centre, these stories will feel familiar to you. The possibilities to relate to a story, like Kim's Convenience, is just really high -- either you've been a customer in these spaces, the convenience store owner (and the community!) is a staple in your life, or you have experienced diaspora and immigration yourself. So, as a TV product, because it has such a high relatability factor, it is an ideal product for streaming. This is also why Schitt's Creek and Letterkenny did so well in USA and abroad, because there's a feeling of it being so specific and unique (Canadiana/Canadianisms are definitely used!), yet also very familiar and formulaic (small-town kindness; communities coming together, working together). (Both these shows are also dialogue/writing gold, something I think is also owed to the theatre roots.)

    Garrick I see what you’re saying about Canadian production, it’s usually bad, but you go with Kim’s convenience over Schitt's Creek are you KIDDING MEEEEEE. That is Canadian gold - Catherine O Hara and the Levy’s come on. I’m offended and I’m Canadian, a rare sight

    I did love the movie but yeah I dont understand why cami and maya didnt kiss, they had the chemistry and plot but I guess they didnt think it would spiral like that lol. Anyways I loved this ep and wish you guys commented on more queer content 😶‍🌫️

      Part of me thinks its because the target audience overlaps with the audience that would interpret that as romanticizing toxic relationships

      part of me thinks that it was attempting to subvert expectations. i found it nice to see a close relationship between two women with a queer woman involved in the dynamic. ngl, i was still hoping that they would kiss, but they seemed nice and settled in their respective romantic relationships

      because friendships have chemistry too, platonic love is real. but lesbians (hi that’s me) and straight women can absolutely be friends. just friends, that care for each other. it’s been harmful at parts in my life to have others assumptions be that lesbians are just gonna like…seduce their straight friends

    I watched with my mum (I’m gen z and my my mum is gen x) and as much as we’ll love the colour palette, we couldn’t get behind the characters- unlike mean girls, where there meanness is cliche and caricatured, this was kinda horrifying for us. Maybe it’s because my mum has quite a strong moral compass when it comes to certain things so I was being influenced by her but certain scenes where it was quite violent, we kept thinking “are we supposed to be on their sides??”. Having said that, it was enjoyable, definitely gen z, and just to reiterate, love love love the colours.

    I adore you Kelsey, however, I think you must must must see Clueless if you have any chance to gauge the “iconic-ness” of this genre. This movie is a love letter to Amy Heckerling’s characters and looks like if Heathers was set at Beauxbatons. I really liked this as a fun homage movie and I hope the source materials get their much deserved iconic views as well

    Maya doesn't like when people speculate her sexuality, which is fair it's no ones business but hers, however, she stated in an interview that whilst writing her album Moss (go listen it's amazing) she went back to a mindset similar to when she was a teen and started questioning :)
    and her characters crush is called Gabby
