    We came to visit the CT coast towns last Thanksgiving and it was sheer perfection. No tourists, gorgeous foliage, and we even saw a Christmas tree lighting on the Milford green! It felt like we were in a Hallmark movie.

    I highly recommend skipping I-95 and driving to Orient Point, at the tip of Long Island, where you can catch a car ferry to New London, within a 15 minute drive of Mystic. Better yet, leave your car in Orient Point and ride your bike from New London to Mystic!

    When you grow up in the area and you go to Mystic and Mystic Seaport every year as a school field trip it doesn't mean anything special. Now as an adult, living away from the area, I miss it soo much!!! I used to live in Stonington Borough, I miss the smells, the sights everything (I don't miss the snow, I live in FLA now). I brought a friend who is a born and bred Floridian, she loved all the buildings and sites. I took tons of pictures to refresh my memory. A lot has changed, but Mystic and Stonington thankfully have not. Also, traveling from NYC take the Merritt PKY, avoid I95 New Haven to New York City. I never drive into the city if I don't have to, park and take a train or drive around the city. Also another village in the area worth the short ride and walk around, Noank (excellent "lobstah" at Abbott's Lobster in the Rough), not quite as "touristy"

      Did you guys drive into the Seaport from your hotel? How about Stonington? What's the best way to get there from your hotel? I don't know if I'd drive given the traffic and lack of parking.

    • @VGH823
      @VGH823 7 лет назад

      A lot of the hotels have shuttles that drop guests in Downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport(they're 2 different places and not exactly walking distance to each other) and they usually do shuttles to the casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. The Seaport is easy to get it, it's a couple minutes from I95, where all the big hotels are. They have a lot of parking, tho it's crowded in the summer. Getting into Downtown Mystic is a nightmare, I'd take the shuttle if the hotel has one.

    • @robertlee8805
      @robertlee8805 5 лет назад

      @@VGH823 It's a good healthy walk to/from the downtown/hotels. Nice way to really see Mystic, CT. Oh, you can rent or bikeshare. There's one in front of Bank Square Book Shop diagonally across from Mystic Pizza.

    Great place to visit, and best place I have ever lived. Gas may be expensive, but you don't have to buy much - or drive much - with everything so close by. When you feel like going somewhere, take the train or sail there.Asheville, Charleston, etc., cannot hold a candle to the Mystic / New London / Stonington / Watch Hill (RI) / Essex area.

  • @johnpouliot

    Sure, getting there from the South is a problem. That's why you have to take the Garden State Parkway and then The Tappan Zee bridge. Avoid the George Washington bridge and the Cross Bronx Expressway at all times.

    • @robertlee8805
      @robertlee8805 5 лет назад +1

      Correction. Not the Garden Expressway take the Palisaides Parkway NJ Rt. 9W to Exit 4 to Tappan Zee Bridge to I-95 North. You'll end up just on the border of NY CT. When you're near Ft. Lee, NJ type on your GPS on Android to Tappan Zee Bridge, after you're on the bridge type/ask Google Maps to take you to Mystic, CT.

    Just spent a couple of days in Mystic on a job for my company. Didn't have much time for sightseeing and it was snowing, but I drove past the seaport and glimpsed the Charles W. Morgan which one of my ancestors, Captain George Fred Tilton, restored in the 1920's. I also had a great meal at the Steak Loft, and I hope to return again when the weather is more pleasant. I must agree however that it is VERY expensive, at least compared to the southeast. Cheers!

    Traffic has never been a big issue in the twenty years or , that I have visited. Summer is O.K. But Fall is definitely the best Time to see during The Month of October. There are many ways to save money if need be, whether you stay a few nights at a mid priced hotel, restaurant, ect. Winter is a definite NO, But always a great Place to come and visit.

    The fall is where it's at. Still not too cold and also less tourists. Although winter is great to, and you avoid tourists. Just dress for the occasion and and drink hot coffee. You can have virtually the whole place to yourself. If you are in the NYC area just leave at night after 9pm to avoid traiffic, and it's a pretty short drive

    Oh, so it's an open-air museum of sorts ! Cool. :-) I like it when old regional architecture gets preserved in at least this way. And it helps that this particular museum is maritime-focused, it gives it a unique flavour. A pity that it seems to be pricy even by American standards.

    I lived in Mystic in the early 90's (for 6 years) and we locals LOVED when the tourists left. It's a very small town and when the tourists "invaded" we avoided downtown. Looks like it's gotten worse. I would recommend venturing outside of Mystic. Check out Old Saybrook, etc. Mystic is way too "tourist-y"

    Living in Springfield, Ma, it’s only an hour and a half away so when we don’t feel like driving to the Cape, we’ll go here. It’s one of the places we usually go to almost every year. +ajl1239 The Northeast is no longer the richest part of the country. yes there still many wealthy people here, but they made their money elsewhere. It was up until the mid 20th century when much of the manufacturing left, leaving most of the cities in and states in desperation. It also doesn't help that the states are badly mismanaged and corrupt. The northeast, besides NYC and the Boston areas, is now just a shell of itself living on memories its industrial past. The whole region feels like a museum no wonder why tourism is now the largest industry in the region.
