The 50s Kid is the absolute best on youtube with regard to any BMW e46 repair. His step by step videos are very instructional and utilize the exact level of detail needed to complete each repair. Thank you for all the help you've given me on several BMW projects...
I’ve used your videos for so many different repairs and each time after scrolling the comments and taking in everything the job requires I’ve attempted and succeeded. Your videos are amazing and user knowledgeable I don’t just repair cluelessly I repair and actually understand the function of the things I’m repairing. From Temecula CA thank you for everything man.
Great DIY video! Watched it several times, just one pointer that would make this project easier- the Lisle tool is a must, your right! But you don’t need to remove the headlight, the top line is easily extracted from the top, and the bottom line is easily removed from under the car, much much easier than removing the headlight especially for the e46 owners that have headlight washer contraptions to contend with.
Your videos are very informative especially the tips and tricks that are critical to a job done properly. I'm not a mechanic so before I do any DIY on my car, I try to get as much information as I can and your video(s) alone provides all I need to tackle a job. It also gives me the confidence that there will be no surprises, so just wanted to say thank you for making this video as it helped me a lot.
I was literally about to do the same exact thing to my car this weekend !!!! I even got the same kit lol. You dropping this video is such a coincidence and extremely convenient for me, thanks !

The colour of the O-ring denotes the type of rubber it is made from, and its application. The subject is quite complicated, and I’m going to over simplify it in this comment, however for example: Black O-rings: are generally for water and air, and operated in medium temperatures and pressure. Yellow O-rings: are for gas application, with increased pressure. Green O-rings: are for oils with extreme pressures and high temperatures. DDD = Different rubbers react Differently to Different fluids. ;)
Hey! Hope you're doing well, and I wish you'd return to teach us more about servicing the E46 chassis. Your videos inspired me to purchase mine, as I'd never have bought a used, ten year old, German sport sedan without such detailed repair guides.
Thanks for the tip on using the lisle pliers! One of the lines were extra tight and definitely needed the muscle from this pliers to unlock the connector. Well worth the investment. Great video and tips! Keep them coming
Just did this today. Excellent video! Helped a lot. I ordered the tool and the clamp kit and it worked out awesome! I also replaced the pump at the same time as it was moaning.
Thanks again Jason, I ordered the same kit and was able to complete the job today. I had leaking from the hoses attached to the reservoir and pressure lines. I purchased the removal tool first and was able to remove both hoses without taking off the light cluster. Hope you are doing well.
Bummer I can only smash the thumbs up button once. :) Thank you for sharing! Everything! Son and I just did this on the E46 finishing out an oil pan gasket replacement. Huge smile as I (we) also do the put it back as Factory thing. We too were puzzled with the REIN design of the hose. My thoughts at first they just 'swedged' it incorrectly.
I really appreciate your videos. Thank you so much for them. One thing that occurred to me - when attaching any of the new hoses, you used silicone paste. Which, like you said is probably fine. For anyone squeamish though - one could lubricate the hose-end with a little of the ATF which the PS system uses. IE a good rule of thumb could be - to lubricate any new hose(s) and seal(s) with the fluid that normally runs through whatever system is being worked on. Right?
The pressure hose hunt is doing my head in. I can only find hoses for LHD. RealOEM isn’t really helpful on this because 1; the picture is somewhat generic, doesn’t show whether it’s for LF-20 or LF-30 and 2; the part numbers don’t show it’s for which pump. I hope the E46 community can share some insight on this. Oh and Jason, great, informative video as always. I’ve had my 330i for 6 years now, and your videos have helped me a huge amount! Thank you!!!
Thought I would share this Don't use 'power steering fluid' on an E46 Look on the reservoir filler cap to decide if you need ATF or CHF, it will tell you. TIS manual states ATF is part number 8122 9400 272 - Trade name "BMW automatic transmission fluid" . This equates to BMW ATF D2 (not D3) and so D2 is the correct stuff - perhaps D doesn't stand for Dexron in this instance, seeing as Dexron is a fluid originally made for GM. CHF part number is 8122 9407 758 trade name Pentosin CHF 11s
You got lucky the plastic hose clamp locks on your hoses are intact. The plastic deteriorates on some old hoses and it requires a dremel to cut the hose clamping mechanism off. The job is easier if you do it with any other maintenance job where the alternator comes out. That allows access from the top.
good video again ..with the single ear clamps the easiest way to remove (expand) them is with expanding circlip pliers and to tighten them instead of buying inflated priced auto ear clamp pliers go to hardware and get nail pincher pliers also on the end of the handle there is a cutout that can be used to remove the plastic pins in the 4 push-in plugs on air induct to airbox
+1 @7:55 for the oem EAR clamps. It’s a true sign of a BMW enthusiast using these. I purchased replacements for my master brake cylinder hose and jet pump hoses. It maintains the factory look and I believe the clamps expand evenly with heat cycles vs the slotted worm drives that end up squeezing the hose between the gaps.
@@Robert.K thank you for this comment. I went to my local auto zone and they recommended the 11s which is green in color but the fluid in my system is red.
It’s better off getting just the o ring. It’s less then $2 and worth it. I have 249xxx miles on my e46 323i and it’s got the factory power steering reservoir. Just needed an o ring.
I bought the same power steering refresher host and changed my power steering pump and after putting them together the high pressure line is leaking at the pump side. Not too sure why. I followed all your steps. Just wanna pick your brain.
another great video ..I have to do mine soon but seems the line from reservoir to cooler the release is either broken or has fallen out so mine will be a challenge unless someone has a gr8 idea on how to remove the coupling ...those original hose clamps are called ear clamps they are single ear clamp or double ear clamps ..the pliers are the same as carpenters nail pincers (just a few $$) for those who just want to buy a few clamps and pliers
My PS steering hoses are leaking and I think it's coming from the reservoir to the pump hose. The other reservoir hose has been replaced but with a non oem hose. Replacing both. Not planning on replacing the other hoses for now.
My E46 did a really interesting thing, the power steering connector popped off from the radiator while I was driving, instant power steering loss, peeing power steering fluid all over the road 😂
Great video. All of your videos inspire me to do more work on my car instead of taking it to a shop. You have saved me so much money and I'm learning new skills. What is the name of that spray you were using when you were underneath cleaning the car?
I have a couple power steering questions for you. I am going to be replacing the power steering pump on 2003 e46 325i. Have watched your DIY on this several times and feel confident about doing it. My questions are about the fluid. When the car manifested the issue I found I had low fluid - turned out the hose from the resevoir to cooler had rotted, car had set for awhile and the guys at autozone had sold me the CHF stuff so I had changed the hose and reservoir and filled it up with that. I have since learned I probably don't want to use that stuff. My plan is to suck that stuff out of the reservoir and what ever comes out of the lines from the pump when I change it. Will that suffice? Also, once i have it put back together and get the fluid in should I turn the wheels lock to lock with the car engine off or with it running? Some things i have heard is that you should turn the pulley by hand so that fluid gets in the pump before firing it up? I really appreciate all the videos and info, you have been a tremendous help
Hey 50s Kid, thank you so much for your work! That helps a lot! Can you make a video from changing the automatic transmission cooling hoses please? Thank you in advance! Keep up the great work! Cheers!
If I am going to flush my system without replacing any pipes, what's the best way to get the old fluid out? Just remove the 19 and 22 banjo bolts and rack-to-rack to empty the system?
Hey Jason, first of all I wanna thank you for your videos, you have helped me with so much work on my 2000 328i. I replaced the hoses on my PS system including the pump and cooler loop. But I brought the car to the mechanic to have mounts and post O2 sensors replaced, but at the same time I asked him to refill the PS system and check the coolant system which I replaced last year, my question is this he put regular PS fluid in my system, what is the best way to flush it out so I can refill it with the ATF fluid it requires to function properly. What should I use to do the flush?
50s kid I need your help. I lost my power steering. I took the pump out on my E46 that I just installed in the fall, the shaft had broken. I put another one in and I still don't have power steering. What else could it be? My lines seem like they are working. I have not put pulled them all off and seen if they are clogged. What else could it be?
My steering wheel is kind of hard to turn. I keep asking my mechanic and he claims this is a sports car and it should be fine. I am so puzzled. I mean, it turns but it's like a quarter of the support you get from power steering. MAybe I will have to replace the whole thing assuming the pump is fine.

I’ve got to do the same thing for my 2010 550i sedan. Great video and source for parts. Will be checking them out now.
you should use CHF 11s power steering fluid that way the pump will not over heat cause leaking hoses specially the Reservoir can
You can use any dexron iii fluid
Look at the cap on the reservoir. It will either say "ATF" or "CHF" on it, use the one specified.
CHF 11S is for cars with active steering and/or dynamic drive. Regular power steering uses ATF.
