The best lines he ever uttered were his own - so witty and self-deprecating; he had a wonderfully comic-ironic view of the world, his business, and of himself within it. The generosity he showed to family and loved ones was impressive; I just wish his life had been longer, less complicated; happier.

Richard Burton was a marvelous actor and he was one great guy. His personal diaries were published a few years ago and although they were edited down to a miserly '800' pages they provided an astonishing insight into the real man. His main worry after a nights drinking was if he might have insulted some one he had come across, that was it...no fighting, no wrecking bars, just a nice decent guy. The people who criticize Mr Burton for making movies just for the money might take into consideration the fact that he kept forty members of his extended family on the payroll full time, acting in Shakespeare would not cover expenses like this. He was an alcoholic like countless other people and like many he could never shake it off, and those who say ' why doesn't such a person just give up the booze?....well, they simply have no idea of what they are talking about.

Lauren Bacall knew him and she decribed him as a very money-minded person of pretty low values. He said he was a friend of Bogard, so I guess she was thrusful and fully aware of what she said.

What's fascinating about Richard Burton was that he was such a paradoxical figure. On the one hand he was fiercely proud of his Welsh heritage and the mining class he came from - he had intelligence, effortless charisma & star presence and a one in a million type voice. On the other hand, he seemed to have such a superficial, hedonistic view of life and his talents, which I find a bit sad.
Yet what I enjoy about him is that he was honest and consistent about his priorities and outlook in life: he enjoyed being famous, making lots of money, elevating his social prestige and getting the star treatment. I guess as Burton himself suggests in his interview with Parkinson was that his outlandish and ostentatious show of wealth during his relationship with Liz Taylor was a reflection of the irony he saw; that a man of his humble background, as proud as he was of it, found himself surrounded by the glitz and glamor of the elite. I guess to him, his life was like a dream that came and went.

If anyone has ever wondered what Burton was like drunk, the Film 74 interview is the part to watch. Apparently Barry Norman turned up for the interview and was told Burton was drunk but they had to get the interview done...so they did. I don't think that was kind of them - far better to have e a sober Burton than a drunk one - he could be morose, surly, angry even when drunk as his diaries attest in his own words of his alcoholism; here he was a mix of melancholy and amusing - but it was an inflicted humiliation upon the man by the BBC to 'get the interview done at all costs'. What I find most annoying was the constant 'he sold out the Theatre for Hollywood'...no one, except Taylor pointed out the hypocrisy of critics - Gielgud, Schofield, Olivier, ALL moved from theatre to film and back multiple times and yet were constantly lauded for it whereas The Boy from the Valleys was consistently castigated for it - it must have pissed Burton off royally deep down. The poor sod. RIP Rich.

He was being truthful when he said money was the reason he still did movies. He made tons of money during his career but he lived an extravagant lifestyle and blew through most of it. Spending it nearly as fast as he earned it. When he passed in 1984 his estate was only worth $4.5 million which was still a lot of money in those days but shockingly low for someone as famous as him.

Brilliant man, ok he drunk heavily and smoked, died to early, the man was a genius and had presence, class, powerful, could hold a film together on his own with his ability, richard is insecure and probably worries alot, just an observation. He seems a tortured sole with the drink and ciggies. But when he is acting its like a switch gets turned on and he just does the business. Bang and he puts on a commanding performance. I love richard burton and he was a hollywood A lister. I get the sense he never forgot his roots, whare he was from. Proud that richard is british and is a man from wales, the interview whare he had a red jumper on, was struggling i thought, chain smoking, partially drunk, it was hard to watch him struggle through that interview, he even asked the interviewer if he could smoke, a troubled sole with the booze but a genius actor and he will always be remembered as one of the best actors of all time. I especially liked his commanding performance as Major Johan Smitt in Whare Eagles Dare. With an incredible cast that had so much depth, that movie in 1968 hits right out the gate with the music, the panoramic view of what the viewer is supposed to see, the bavarian alps, the film does not stop from start to finish and is a masterpiece that is still watched today and loved. R.I.P Mr Richard Burton. There will never be another on screen like you.

The interviewers are such sexist dolts here, amused by her fire and ignoring her comments about film and stage born of decades of experience. It is true, it was difficult to leave Sybil, but it was more difficult to stay away from Elizabeth. They hadn't seen each other for a long time and he called her. After lunch that day, she decided that just seeing him once in a while would make her happy and she wanted him to stay married to Sybil, so they would all be happy. But he loved Elizabeth too much for that. His real torment was when Elizabeth divorced him that second time. They never stopped loving each other.

5ft 10.5 that’s the tallest he’s ever been 😂 5ft 8 -9 was the understood height ... interesting how actual height was such a thing to keep hidden in Hollywood

Taylor comes across so badly here. Like some sort of hysterical shrew.

No, Soyuz, that's called "being upset" not "hysterical shrew". You know, an emotion that both men and women feel. As in a common human state.

Spare me the faux genderpsychobabble 😬 Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Taylor’s personality would know that she was a very difficult character. Her 8 marriages would attest to that.

@@marlon1171 yes, I agree. She had borderline personality disorder. She changed her personality with whoever she was with...never had a core

L D : Very acurate analysis of this actress’s personality! I couldn’t agree with you more on this... I also think that both her and burton being quiet alcoholic, seemed to fuel and enhance the already diseased and sickly nature of their relationship..
