I'm sure if it were down to the film viewing public, Richard Burton, Micheal Caine, Peter O'toole, Richard Harris ALL would have won Oscars at some point in their great works. Instead it's down to some invisible Hollywood fat cat commitee to decide on these things. Completely fixed and worthless, and I would tell Burton so if he were alive and sober enough to listen to me. @@carolannemckenzie3849

Regardless of burton and taylor's marital hype these two were wonderful together and did not get the true recognition they deserved as storytellers. I must say she was not one of my favorite storytellers but as i now watch her films i began to see a genuineness in her portrayal of the characters she become on screen. He of course was just brilliant as a storyteller. Yes he never won an oscar but his body of work lives on far greater than any oscar. I just saw them in the movie The Sandpiper and it really had an effect on me as there was a sadness that their marriage did not last as i believe she truly loved him. He died far too young and is buried in a local old cemetary in Switzerland not far from his home. Elizabeth could not even pay her respects at his gravesite because the local paparazzi would not leave her alone. All diamonds aside i do believe she would have stayed with him even without the diamonds and fame. I miss these legends of storytellers. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

As he betrayed his working class principles by leaving his wife for a glamourous woman. I dont think he ended up liking Elizabeth Taylor he ended up despising her. @michaelmagarian1081 Michael, indeed I have. Saw the play as well long before the movie. I don't find his performance memorable. Lot's of English actors could have done as good. I think Burton was an interesting man and had a beautiful voice. Other than Virginia Woolf I don't recall being as awestruck by any of his performances as I would have been by a Day- Lewis, Olivier, Hurt, Scofield, Kingsley and I could continue with a long list. He was probably more interesting on stage than film.
I didn't realise until on this thread that he never won an Oscar but it sort of backs up my point.

When Richard was starting out: Theatre was the be all to end all in those days, and if you didn't speak *the Queens English* you could forget about becoming a professional. Michael Caine for instance, came up in a different era, much later - and was able to keep some soft traces of his Cockney origins, regardless of his theatrical CV. Which was an impressive CV, btw.

This was a documentary made by Tony Palmer after Burton's death, released to coincide with Melvyn Bragg's extensive biography of Burton published in 1988. It aired on Channel 4 in the UK and was accompanied by a short season of Burton's films - Nineteen Eighty-Four, Equus, the Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and Under Milk Wood.
