I can see why Kurt loved these guys so much. Wipers are intense, and I bet you could feel it in the air Live! Kurt definitely turned it up to 11, but this is where it all came from.
Wipers were alot more original and was already turnt up to 11 before Kurt was even listening to Punk rock. Nirvana owe alot of their sound to these dudes.
First of all, the only reason i'm here watching this video is because of Kurt Cobain, if he hadn't covered this tune i would never have known this song or the band, Kurt was very good at giving credit where credit is due and has made it very known who his influences were. Same thing with the Melvins, Pixies, Big Black, The Vaselines, Meat Puppets, Mudhoney, and many more bands that Kurt has wore their t-shirts or talked about in interviews or covered songs. And i'm sure because of Kurt Cobain the Wipers and other bands i mentioned sold a lot more records and tickets!
The moron said Greg Sage made more money because of Kurt Cobain. A) as if that's the point B) Go watch the video of Buzz trying to buy a house with street cred to see how much Kurt Cobain knowing your music gets you.
It's the other way around kiddo. Kurt wouldn't be as huge without ripping off alot of bands, bet you don't even know what im talking about lol, anyways Wipers are lightyears ahead of Nirvana and clueless Posers don't even know a thing about rock outside Nirvana
Whatever anyone's feelings about Kurt's '80s and early '90s Alt-Rock cred is, the simple fact of the matter is that pretty much everyone watching this video who isn't from Portland and the wider Pac-NW, or wasn't living there during this time-period, wouldn't have had any knowledge of Greg Sage and his band, The Wipers, had it not been for Nirvana covering this song and Kurt taking advantage of his notoriety to play booster for this band (as he did for other underground/more-obscure artists and bands) by wearing their t-shirts and name-dropping them during interviews. Growing up in the Balt-DC region, I had zero awareness of the Wipers, The Vaselines, Daniel Johnston, and many other artists and bands that Cobain showed props to. The Pixies were about the only act that I had had any prior knowledge of before he declared them a major influence on him and his musical tastes/songwriting philosophy
I've first heard of the Wipers from Nirvana, howerver, I consider this to be more genuine 'punk-rock' than Nirvana could produce. Not that there is anything wrong with it, Nirvana was more poppy. But when it comes to real energy, the feeling of moving the crowd with raw focus and emotion, Sage had it like no other. The influence is real.
The Wipers are one of the most genuine punk rock bands of all time. Greg Sage is a true man of the art. He cared not for record label attention, fame, interviews, even professional recording. He did everything himself & with his bandmates and became the single most influential Pacific Northwest punk rock band without ANY publicity or record label promotion. At that cost, his & their music is much less known, but their influence was undeniably present. Not to mention that Greg Sage is probably one of the best guitarists to walk the earth in terms of composure.
As a huge fan of Kurt imma have to say um your 100% right lol. This dudes strumming speed is nuts, he’s not just playing the record, and he’s singing at the same time? Gimme a break.
I wish people would stop talking about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love every time The Wipers is mentioned. He was must one of many people who realized how special Sage and his music is. And frankly, not the best of them. Watch Documentary ALien Boy.
Kurt likes this band's song.. covered again with a flavor that can be touched by the ears of his contemporaries, although not all.. but I really like it, as well as the Bowie song he covered 😋
@MrMelikeitlongtime except pieaces that shows where yr mind is,anyone that thinks that nirvana cover is better than wipers, then you should ask curt, that he considered wipers as his gods...and read some book
Don't tell the world about every little thing you love, then it gets wore out like now I cringe when I hear famous nw bands become you all wore it out copy copy copy
I love the wipers but to say that bands like nirvana and the melvins didn't improve on their songs by cutting the fat and having more on point vocals you must be tripping.. Put this next to nirvana's raw vocals and on point playing, they and the melvins with their version of youth of America, took great wipers songs and took them to the stratosphere.. And if that weren't the case, the wipers would have been the biggest band of the 90s.. Greg didn't have the voice of cobain, they didn't have the timing of the melvins or grohls drumming, and let's face it 90percent of the commenter would have never heard of the wipers if it weren't for louder rawer and tighter bands covering their sweet grooves.. And to be so snobby to deny that proves you don't have an ear for music.. Peace.
@@ScottieWallace sorry, you just come across as a very annoying Nirvana fanboy. I certainly have respect for Nirvana but not arrogant self-righteous fans like you who think their opinion is the only one that counts (and yes that's all it is, an opinion, although that obviously is news to you) and then says 'peace' at the end, what a fucking joke.
I agree to an extent, but I think your missing the point, wipers weren’t trying to be punk or snappy, although I prefer the nirvana version of this song, the guitar tone and overall atmosphere of the song is completely different, wipers were trying to create music that existed almost in a vacuum, entirely independent in its production and release while sounding like no other artist, and I think they succeeded
I am a Wipers fan because of King Buzzo. The Wipers really deserve a better recognition to the part they played in rocks evolution.
The same with me.
So glad to see live footage of the wipers!
I can see why Kurt loved these guys so much. Wipers are intense, and I bet you could feel it in the air Live! Kurt definitely turned it up to 11, but this is where it all came from.
These guys *are* Nirvana. Without DGC and Butch Vig.

I feel lucky to have seen Greg Sage solo in Portland in about 88’ at the Pine Street Theater. Just awesome!!!
Greatest Portland Band Ever!!! Greg Sage please come back here and do a reunion!
Don’t forget poison idea but easily my two favorite bands
He thinks antifa and the alt left fuckwits in Portland are cunts
Tons of energy and recklessly rocking that audience, wish l was there!
The Wipers rule. They always have, and they always will. At least for me ;)
Arguably the best rock band ever.
Especially from a songwriting/originality standpoint.
I love seeing how passionate greg sage is while playing. The wipers did not make as much money as they deserved.
Well Greg Sage didn't care about money or didn't even wanna advertise any of his albums at all

I think kurt found the perfect balance between high energy raw rock and catchy melodies of pop.
