Hey 602! You are absolutely right; the Fazer is probably ONE of the best all-round bikes that you can buy. However, when we make our choices our personal preferences and needs weight those choices when we compare. I'm not too bothered about 0-60 but rest assured that a GS will crush any car. My GS is my transport (don't have a tin box) and I need something that eats potholes and speed bumps. And I'm too old and lazy to lube a chain! AND big twins are just so characterful and addictive to ride!
Looking forward to the final review! I have a GSA, Love my bike, but I would trade in a heartbeat if the 2013 is that much more bike. Will test drive the KTM 1190 also before make final decision. Continua, valeu !!
Coming from another Fazer owner I couldn't agree more. I've looked up the specs for these bikes before, the only thing going for the GS was torque. The FZ6 wins on everything else, so for value for money I'd buy it every time.
Luggage capacity is just add-on stuff, you can bolt as big a box as you want to it. Tank range is only marginally better and to be honest I think that is more to do with how you drive. Shaft drive is a big plus, you are right there, I'd like that on my Fazer no doubt about that. I don't know much about the resale value of either bike properly so I can't comment there.
i mostly agree with u guys...i just took my bike to honda for inspection, and as a "ride-home" bike i got the new honda Crosstourer (VFR1200X) and more and more i understand why people buy these bikes..its not just lifestyle as mentioned before, its also incredible versatility..they are as fast as u would ever want it to be (specially the VFR) they brake very well (even with 280kg) they go off-road, and dive into corners like sport bikes..all that with great comfort...i love this new-age enduros
Hey Firecul42. What about luggage capacity, tank range, shaft drive, resale value... Each to their own, Buddy. The Fazer is a great bike but then I love most things with two wheels and a big engine! Stay safe, Si.
I also went back and looked up the stats for the two bikes and it has been updated recently to more favour the GS so I'll take back my remarks about the BMW not having any plus points. But I stick by the comment that the FZ6 is better value for money.
FZ1 owner here. The Fazer is probably one of the best all-around bikes there is. You can do touring, commuting, or twisties all on the same bike. A GS won't go 0-60 in 3 seconds flat. I disagree on shaft drive. GS final drives have a lot of failures, and they sap a good deal of power too. It's really not that hard to lube the chain every tank of gas or so. As for price, BMWs hold their value well, but Fazers are cheap to begin with. You don't lose much money either way.
Riding my 2006 GS (K&N filter, full Remus system, road rubber) actually can be "really, really exciting", Adam... Is the new GS a superb piece of kit? Undoubtedly... If I didn't have a GS, would I buy a new one? Not until next year, in case of teething problems and then it would be a toss-up against the Explorer... Is the new GS worth more than TWICE my old one? I don't think so...
The GS is a wonderful bike. It actually does have some pretty amazing performance, especially for an adventure-touring type. Straight line performance would be about equal to the FZ6, which is very respectable. One day when I have room for two bikes, I'll probably sell the FZ1 and buy a R1200GS and an S1000RR. That would go well with an E36 M3 (can you tell I like BMW?)
Morning Firecul! Be interested to hear how the Fazer copes with crappy, salty British winters... My 2006 GS has been ridden, from new, in all sorts and I've just got some paint bubbling below the alternator cover (common fault), otherwise she's like new. As a matter of interest I paid £9,200 in 2006 and my dealer reckons it's worth around £5,200 (trade) now. While we're on the subject of £notes; I'm sure that Yamaha servicing AND parts are a lot cheaper than their Bavarian equivalent! KR, Si.
Sod the head light, mate! This is the nearest thing that BM do to an off roader, and they' ve added more junk/nooks and crannies,a set of rads to attempt to get the cap out of . And they've put the exhaust on the bottom! You hit a bad rutted section on a green lane, and the parts department get even deeper into your pockets.OK this is about as off road as an Range Rover Evoque. It's so far from the first GS850.Is it just the design department attempting to feed the dealers parts departments?
just love the fact that I can't send you a message, yet I can respond to your post - call me at 310-266-9763 if you have questions tmrw. Warning, I may sound groggy if you call before 11:59am
v-strom roughly the same power as any of the big GSes? that tells me you've never ridden any of both. the wee is a nice bike but its got nothing compared to the GS as far as power goes. the wee has 60nm max. torque@6500rpm ... thats what you get on the 1200 at around 3500rpm with the max being 115@7000rpm ... ofc the wee is lighter but 30kg less dont make up for half the max. torque & hp.
Bruce, you need to change the helmet ASAP! Having the rising sun symbols on your helmet is the same as having the swastika. I'm sure you didn't mean it but it's insensitive and inappropriate.
I love my R1200GS 2010, still going strong !!
Sold my 2016 GSA W/C---- I missed the sound, feel and simplicity of the Hexhead and bought a used 2011 with only 12k miles... SO FUN!
Brought my own home recently. Fantastic machine. Can't ask for anything more in any mode of transportation, let alone a motorcycle.
I´m not a biker, but this is one of the better reviews I have seen so far - has a purpose and valid information - keep it up. Thanks ;)
I still ride my 95 R1100 GS it will not die... But when it does I will not by one with a radiator...

I'm really not convinced by the standard beam headlight on the new bike and whether people will see it.
where is the follow up to this ? what is the final report/assessment ?
How about a comparison test with a C90?
In Malta we say if you don't reach the grapes don't say they taste horrible.Excellent bike.
Same saying in Greece. Funny!!! 😉
Each to their own, I personally love the peak at the front, makes it look so much more aggressive
That headlight is mystical.
You come to Sweden! Here a lot of the 1200-owners let the bike work, putting a lot of miles on dirt under the wheels.

Sometimes I feel like theres too much crap on new bikes, and then I see that new GS and think... hmmm... maybe...

Instrument cluster needs re-design and simplified. Especially with Satnav. See Multistrada for comparison.
So where's part 2 of this video???

Gee, I've never heard of vehicles referred to "old" and "new". So the "New" I've figured out is a 2013. The old???
