Video Description: Kawai vs. Yamaha Digital Pianos Blind Test - Part 2
Welcome back to the channel for Part 2 of our exciting blind test series, where we pit Kawai against Yamaha digital pianos! In the previous video, I was blindfolded and played four different instruments without knowing which was which. I shared my thoughts and scores on each piano, and now it’s time to dive into your guesses and ratings, compare them with my notes, and see how we all fared in identifying these instruments.
What to Expect in This Video:
Recap of the Blind Test: I’ll briefly summarize my impressions of each piano, including the tonal qualities and action feel that led me to my guesses.
Piano Breakdown:
Piano 1: I suspected this was a Yamaha model, likely the P-125A, due to its dynamic range and action feel.
Piano 2: I felt this had a distinct Kawai tone, leading me to guess it was the ES-120.
Piano 3: The specific action reminded me of the ES-60, which I was quite confident about.
Piano 4: This one puzzled me, but I ultimately guessed it was the CK-88 based on its tonal quality and action.
Viewer Engagement: I’ll read through some of your insightful comments and guesses from the previous video. It’s fascinating to see how our opinions align or differ!
Comments range from guesses about the models to observations about the key textures and reflections that might indicate the brand.
I’ll highlight some interesting theories and insights shared by viewers, including comparisons to other brands like Casio.
Reveal of the Instruments: The moment of truth! I’ll unveil the actual models of the pianos I played and see how my guesses stack up against the reality.
Did I get the brands right? How many models did I accurately identify?
I’ll share my final score and invite you to share yours in the comments.
Conclusion:
As we wrap up this video, I’ll encourage you to let us know if you enjoyed this format and if you’d like to see more blind tests in the future. Your feedback is invaluable!

Awesome, fun exercise, especially for audience engagement.
Thanks for sharing, Merriam Music!
It's a reward for the years of watching videos and familiarizing with brand sound signatures.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for partaking in this fun little test!
Great video. Please consider doing more of these videos with different pianos :)
Thank you! It seems like it was well received, so I'm sure we'll be doing more of this type of thing. :)
Well this makes me feel pretty good about my choice of the CK88. I've enjoyed it a lot over the last few months. Thanks Stu!
Thanks for tuning in! Glad you're enjoying your CK88! :)
Really great comprasion !
Thank you kindly!
Stu is the man! Also, because of him I bought the Kawai ES 920 and I love it! It’s the perfect action
He certainly is quite the talent! The ES920 is a fantastic piano. We're glad to hear you're happy with it. :)
that was fun. definitely needs to be done again at least once
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure we'll be doing this type of video series again. :)
Nice work guys, thank you all! Love to listen Stu improvising no matter of the piano brand and price. He is inspiring me to learn how to play instrment instead of digging and comparing pianos characteristics.
Thank you kindly! I know Stu appreciates the kind words and support. All the best! :)
Haha, it's not the first time my name is difficult for an English-speaking person, I'm from Poland. In English, my name is Gregory. That’s very cool initiative to take part in, I’ve got all brands correct 🎉
That's awesome! Congrats and thank you so much for partaking! :)
This is very interessting Test and video 🍀🌺🌿
Thank you kindly for tuning in! We really appreciate that.
Yeah Stu, You got my name right! Thanks for making our comments part of your video, and keep up the good content. ❤
Brent here! Thanks so much for partaking in the test and commenting! We appreciate it. :)
Close enough for me. Great video.
Thanks so much! We appreciate you tuning in. :)
I got the brands right based exclusively on yamaha's brighter tone, but had no idea about the models. Fascinating for me is just how little difference I could hear in "quality" between the cheaper and more expensive models in the same brand. Stu's playing mattered a lot more for perceived "good" sound than the actual tone engine. For headphones playing that seems to imply the action is the dominant feature to look out for, and something where Yamaha is really in need of some catch-up on the low end.
It is certainly quite interesting! We start to appreciate how much we listen with our eyes. Naturally, Stu's ability to make any piano sound like a million bucks makes things a little bit trickier in some regards. ;)
Yamaha is always too bright for me, but I only felt like piano number 4 was too bright on my initial listen. So I guess the brightness of piano 1 was subtle enough that it wasn't as obvious as my sighted listening leads me to believe.
I love these tests, they help so much. Keep it up!
That is certainly fair! We're happy to hear that you enjoyed the test and found it helpful. Thank you for the support! We really appreciate that. :)
love all of the content Stu is the best
I'll be sure to pass on the kind words to him for you. :)
I got the brand recognition perfect.
My guesses were derived from the sound.
Just a bit shaky with 80-90% confidence, but I got it!
That's amazing - congrats! And thank you for tuning in! :)
Loved this test. I wonder if your guesses would have been all correct had you played without the headphones, using the digital pianos’ in-built speakers. (Except of course the last one which was a stage piano without speakers)
That is a good point! Perhaps, having heard the extra sonic nuances of the onboard speaker could have helped differentiate things a little further.
The CK88 does have speakers, just not very large ones.
@@NabPunk oh yes, I remember about the speakers now you mention it!
Very interesting given that I'm am currently trying to choose between brands/models.
We're glad the timing has worked out then. Thanks for tuning in!
Blindfold test, always nice
Absolutely! Always a nice challenge. :)
Very interesting video, im also interested to know if the scoring was based purely on digital category and what models would score the highest based on your preferences. If the scoring was general (digital and acoustic), what would be the highest score a digital piano could get compared to an acoustic? Thanks!
You're welcome! Thank you for taking the time to tune in. This scoring was based purely on the digital category I believe. That is a good question. Ultimately, it would come down to subjectivity. Every player would answer that question differently. Perhaps, Stu can tackle this one in a future Q&A video. :)
I would like to see a dedicated video for the p525? Especially analyzing its sounds and action? Like you did for es920
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll pass it along to our production team. We have completed several comparison videos with the P525 though. So, you may find those videos to be helpful.
I too would love to see this. Surely this is a significant enough product to justify more than a comparison video.
Hands up, I think I got everything wrong. 😅
Blind listening tests are always humbling experiences!
Great fun.
We're glad you enjoyed it! :)
Got them all wrong makes models and all. I’m sure guessing would have produced at least one right. Great couple of videos. Great fun. Bring them on. I knew Stu wouldn’t be far adrift. I thought not to copy his choices; that would be cheating. Never mind.
It is a fun process regardless of the results! Thanks for partaking! :)
4/4 on brands. I did not guess the specific model.
That's still impressive accuracy. Nice work!
Good job!!! We had to wait a week for the results. Argh! 😂😂😂
Thank you for your patience! We appreciate it. :)
After using Kawai ES 920 for about 3 years, I’ve come to the following conclusions: internal headphone amplifier is garbage, stock sample sound is way off any modern VST. So I have invested into DAC + headphones amplifier + VSL Synchron VST. Oh boy, it sounds gorgeous now! But - I pay classical, that matters.
So, if I was about to make my choice right now, I’d probably go with Kawai VPC1.
If you're using your digital piano primarily as a controller, the Kawai VPC1 would certainly be an excellent choice. With that said, the ES920's RHIII action is still quite solid and impressive.
I knew it was a p145, as we own one 😅
Haha that certainly helps!
If you stock Yamaha's, why don't you have the Clavinova range? The new 800 series is seriously good. I have the CLP875 which is a fantastic instrument. Yamaha have resampled their CFX and Bosendorther, I'm not crazy on the Bosendorther sample, but the CFX has a richness and sparkle to it that differs from other Yamahas I've owned which have a more plain sound.
We are not Yamaha dealers, so we do not stock the entire line. We frequently get Yamaha models on trade though, which allows us to feature the models on the channel.
I have digital pianos of both brands. The sound heard in this video will not be the sound hear when you playing pianos.
The onboard speakers will sound a bit different of course, but - if you are listening using headphones - the line out sounds featured on this video will be well-representative of the actual pianos' tones.
@@MerriamPianos In such videos, it should be clearly stated how the sound heard was recorded. Otherwise, the sound heard when playing the piano will cause disappointment.
nice haircut!
I'll be sure to pass along the compliments to Stu. :)
