Unpopular opinion: there was WAY too much whimpering, whining, crying, and people talking about their emotions this season. Seasons 1-3 of The Expanse were excellent, seasons 4-5 not so much, and I fear this series is going the way of Game of Thrones. Yes, grounding actions in an emotional frame is important, but drenching viewers with those emotions instead of showing the more interesting plot unfolding is a major turn off.

As far I've heard online they'll stop doing the show after Season 6 then likely bring it back later for Seasons 7, 8, and 9. What I've seen online says there's a 30 year gap in the books between books 6 and 7 anyway. So it's been proposed online they might wait 10~ or more years between those two seasons.

@@TheAndrewJohnBennett season 6 is to be the last but whilst Naomi annoys me with the worst Belter accent on TE - I still love it and would prefer it continued....probably because it's done what most other sci-fi shows have failed at; it's shown a future where humans are space bound but yet the technology still seems familiar. Honestly, I'd watch it as a soap opera if the'y put it on every day.
Luckily, the show isn't cancel, there is just a wide gap between book 6 and 7, hence the pause at season 6. Maybe we'll see some side-stories before season 7, but for now, nobody knows.
Amazon obviously realized that The Expanse was a treasure when they picked it up. Hopefully they realize they have one of the best tv shows ever created especially in the Sci-Fi department. I wouldn't even care for Prime Video without The Expanse and I hope S7-9 are done even if there's maybe a very short break in between them and S6. Don't drop the ball Amazon.
@@Species1571 but I would look closer to what actors say, here and there are snipets, I think they will make maybe 3 big movies, for the other 3 books, but i think they are trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between book 6 and 7. I think we will hear something like that after the six season, maybe they will take a brake of one year or so, one must not forget, the writers of the books are also writers on the show, and they were very fast with the books, that is a monster pensum, I could understand taking a break to let the creative jucies flow, to make these books into three final movies.

@@FryingPan76 Eh, Peaches is a specialist fighter. Not at all like Amos. In terms of her wider applicability, she's a Tech, like Amos. Having two engineers is definitely useful, particularly during combat for spot diagnostics and repairs on the fly. And Bobbie, well, she's called Gunny (Gunnery Sergeant) for a reason... she's a specialist for fire control, for PDCs and rail guns. In the few times she's acted in this role on the Roci, everyone on board commented how much better they fight when they have her do it. She would be a huge asset to the team.
Amos infiltrating Peaches into the Roci crew was the highlight for me 😂. Martian motives seem quite obvious at this point, I suppose this is just history typically repeating itself as usual so I really hope this franchise will explore more about "The Builders" origins and why the unknown aggressors are perceived as "aggressors" for wiping out an entire civilization when maybe it was actually an act of heroism?
The authors have mentioned a lot of the things they've come up with are based on history, and there's a lot of examples of history repeating itself so you're right on that point! Hoping we get the answers about the unknown aggressors as well!!

I agree! 10 episodes is short, but due to the pacing felt like an eternity. They could have quite easily fitted what transpired into 5 episodes and IMO we were robbed of most of the malevolence of the rouge Martians, the valiant struggle onboard the ships of the gate defenders and the mutiny aboard the Behemoth. I also felt the same about last season.
I swear the writing, attention to detail, scientific accuracy, action, acting and characters make this show S tier. It's on a league of its own when compared to other Sci fi shows. It definitely deserves another 4 seasons. 3 at the VERY least.
Here's what I think. You should renew seasons for all the books. This is the best sci-fi on television right now. Yeah and more episodes or longer episodes.
Whoever wrote this script made a mistake when the reader says "Inners, Martians, and Belters" instead of "Earthers, Martians, and Belters." The Martians are as much Inners as the Earthers are.

Easily, my favorite TV show right now. I used to think that no SciFi show could touch the reboot of Battle Star Galactica, but The Expanse feels even more compelling than BSG, which is high praise! Please, please, please don't stop after Season 6. There are so many more stories to tell with the crew of the Roci.
Phenomenal season. I was on the edge of my seat for almost the entire episode. I cannot get enough of this show. What a tragedy that A] This show is not better marketed. It deserves nominations in so many categories. B] It's ending after season 6. I know.. I know... There is a time jump. Still, what a waste of sets, costumes, etc.... The story is too rich to not complete.

This was an excellent Season 5 wrapup. One scene that I particularly liked was when Amos realized, about himself, that without Holden and crew he was beginning to slide back to his old ways and needed to get back to them before that fully happened. God I love this show. I stupidly didn't know it was the season finale, so was double shocked after seeing what happened to Alex.
Naomi: I called him a brave idiot. Amos: There's worse things to be. I almost feel like that's a cheeky jab at the allegations surrounding Alex's actor lmao

I've not heard what the show producers thought about this choice, their justification for not doing it - but hopefully they do say so, eventually. The choice to replace such a core character is, to me, far more disruptive than a recast, but perhaps they felt differently, and if so, it would be very interesting to hear why!

Love the Expanse. It’s the best show on Amazon & TV in general. Great 👍 story, characters and actors with terrific production. My only hope is Amazon rethinks cancelling after season 6 with so much new source material remaining. Don’t let it die, finish the story.
That's okay all of us want to know more about the builders and the others. Especially us book readers. There's one more book coming out in the 4th quarter. Hopefully they will fill in all the gaps
This is not only the best syfy show ever made, but one of the best shows period. I hope they figure out a way to adapt the rest of series after season 6 sooner rather than later.
I stumbled onto this show early January 2021, and I binged my way to season 5 in a couple of weeks and had withdrawal symptoms waiting a week for the next episode!
Most narrators are hired for their voice, not their knowledge of the show. The scriptwriter is responsible for that. There were a few small mistakes, but in general it was fine enough for me.
I've been Holden's biggest fan for the first 4 seasons but in Season 5... Camina Drummer stole the show for me. She was unafraid to do what's necessary, even when it meant losing crew and family and even losing the respect of those that stayed with her. But just powering through on the path that she believed to be true and not following the herd, risking her position and her life. Avasarala comes in a very close second, for her approach to dealing with Marco and not hurting innocent Belters in that pursuit. Any which way you look at it, this show has improved from every season to the next and 5 was definitely the best yet. Can't wait for Season 6...!! 😎👍🏼
In light of the Alex situation and consequent unplanned death, we need a new Martian on the Roci to keep the balance of the ship representation in tact. We can’t have 2-3 earthers and 1 belter, it doesn’t work. We need a Martian. I vote Bobbie, but that won’t work with the plot, I don’t think. Haven’t read the books, so I don’t know.

They conducted a full investigation and the results were even worse than expected. He did this to himself. Maybe have some compassions for the women he assaulted.

The Expanse underscores the fact that space is incredibly dangerous even with the best precautions. Given the opportunity to explore 'out there' I would choose to stay home, thanks.
My takeaway: I really enjoy this types of sci-fi. This show shouldn't end in season 6. Please expand it to other characters - like the Mandalorian story in the outer ring.
Season 5: The year that 'The Expanse' jumped the shark - and went full over-the-top soap opera mode. It's probably a good thing that season 6 will end this slide (at least we have the first 4 seasons for posterity to remember).

Let me add my plea for seasons 7-9. Each trilogy of the books is better than the last, and each season of The Expanse is better than the last. Take a couple years after season 6, then produce the rest. I have no idea if the series is profitable or not. Sometimes you've got to produce art just for art's sake. This is one of those times.
So does this mean that the "Proto - Reapers" have reached the mass relays (rings), that the ancient civilization tried so hard to keep away? How do you even fight such a foe? They're like the prophets from DS9, existing inside wormholes (pocket dimensions).
Loving how the show is developing and while the show changes some things from the books I think it changes them for the better .Only thing I hope is that in replacing Alex its a martian as in Bobbi that replaces him.the dynamic wouldnt work if it was Bull as hes an earther .But also Holdens face when Peaches came on board ....Priceless hehe.
The Expanse just gets better and better. I really enjoyed season 5. The acting was brilliant the script spot on and a fabulous cliff hanger ending. I can’t believe we only have one more series before it ends.

According to the creators, the decision to kill off Alex was made before all the stuff with Cas came to light. They said they felt it was important to for fans know that major characters could die, to give things more gravity (pun for sure intended). Whether that’s the truth or not...
I understand all of that, I just think that Alex (the character) could have a more epic ending. A stroke? After dodging so many bullets ends up dying of a stroke? The flyboy deserved a better ending. IMO

I think the character Alex would have remained part of the crew for the duration - he was just too popular and so perfect for the part to elect to let him die in the show. I don't condemn them for trying to back pedal to make it appear it was in the plan from the start however.

They neither confirm or deny whether it is true (maybe they want to keep the conclusion private), but with the decision of Cas Anvar being axed, I'm thinking it was true. Per Deadline, it’s now been confirmed that Anvar will not return for the show’s sixth season. He will still be present for season 5, which wrapped production before the allegations arose publically."
Why Amazon, why??? When I finished the season and saw Alex die the way he died I knew immediately... #me2 did it again... A short Google search later... Yap I was right.... When Ashford died, or any other character in the show it was always for a purpose, it always had implications and it always felt genuine and heartfelt. But Alex just dies like that and the crew is already happy to move on a few scenes later with their champagne in their hand at cocktail party, while Ashfords death (who is not a main character!!!) was a motivating factor for Drummer the whole season long. I dont even want do argue that you had the write him off (although it is debatable how much a persons work life has to suffer for private reasons...), but there are better ways... Why not just let him join his family offscreen between seasons? I mean you laid the groundwork already in the first episodes of S05. His Ex hates him, is son doesn't know him, why not let him leave the crew so he can make amends to his family and let Peaches basically fill in his shoes as the new pilot/Alex replacement. You could stay true to the book and let her basically do what Alex would have done otherwise and write off Alex in a more graceful manner. You did this character dirty and once more something I loved has been ruined for political reasons... Thanks!
Yes I do agree with that point ,Alex'death was so badly played,I mean naomi went through high radiation exposure didn't drink water had anxiety and was pushing her body to the limits while alex died of a stroke ? Alex'ending was the worst .
I wish they had replaced the actor for Alex and had another way to kill him off, that was just too sudden and quick for what they did for a major charactor. I like the space fight, keep those coming.

They also had to add that after shooting wrapped when Cas Anvar was fired so they used a still image and added CGI and filmed some pick up scenes to reference it. This is a type of death from the books...just a different character.
Can't wait for Season 6! I plan to watch Season 5 again. Dominique Tipper was amazing this season! I wish they would go back to 13 episodes instead of 10.
My takeaway? One more season is not enough! This is one of the best shows out there - build on that! (Two additional takeaways: 1. Make better merch! the current one is boring af. 2. Next time you have to kill someone off: please invest maybe a minute more to that. The Alex-scene felt a bit off, sadly)
Spoilers galore but excellent Analysis of a masterclass in science fiction television. I didn't pick up many of these themes until this video, goes to show how multi layered and textured the writing is. Indeed the Roci crew philosophy of chosen family and mutual sacrifice are lessons for everyone. The stakes have certainly been raised for season 6.
One season doesn’t even feel close to enough to wrap this show up even if you ignore the volume of the source material left to cover. I hope Netflix picked it up.
I think The Expanse is currently * the best * sci fi show on air. Thanks Amazon Prime. Please keep it alive as long as it's possible and, if not, have similar shows in the pipeline.
Alex and the chemistry he shared with the show's other characters, specifically Amos and Bobby, will be missed... It makes me so mad that Cas Anvar seemingly abused his position of celebrity and allegedly did whatever has been alleged about him but, after Alcon Entertainment and Amazon did something that I would consider to be a rarity in the corporate world of entertainment of today, and actually commissioned the conducting of an investigation into the multiple cases of potentially inappropriate behavior by Cas and what is said to have happened on a consistent basis, doing so via a third party. Although it seems he apparently didn't engage in anything strictly illegal, the evidence uncovered was too much to simply be ignored and was considered by the people at Alcon and Amazon to be very inappropriate, problematic and could have potentially involved underage fans at conventions and thus left them with no choice but to terminate their professional relationship with Mr. Anvar, ending his involvement in the show. Im sure some will decry this as "cancel culture" but, based on the information that is known, I think it was the best decisions that could have been made in what was definitely a bad situation.
Holden's political ideology actually is "Live and let live". And it's the greatest purpose an ordinary man can strive for in a complicated world/universe ever since WWI (For a relatively long period soldiers in the trenches refused to shoot their enemies. Thus for the first time in history - in order to make the war bloody - Command discovered how false mass propaganda works). Trends in current politics seem to be very different from Holden's views however.
It was stupid to kill off Alex. If absolutely necessary, recast him, but you can't just kill him off. I just finished book 8, and Alex is critical throughout the book. I am fine with most of the creative liberties you've taken, but the Expanse without Alex really isn't the same story.

I swear the writing, attention to detail, scientific accuracy, action, acting and characters make this show S tier. It's on a league of its own when compared to other Sci fi shows. It definitely deserves another 4 seasons. 3 at the VERY least.
Here's what I think. You should renew seasons for all the books. This is the best sci-fi on television right now. Yeah and more episodes or longer episodes.
Whoever wrote this script made a mistake when the reader says "Inners, Martians, and Belters" instead of "Earthers, Martians, and Belters." The Martians are as much Inners as the Earthers are.
Great point. I guess they felt they had to cover all the factions and forgot that one term included two groups already.

@@LordTelperion The Martians should have been SO much more! After reading the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Blue Mars, Green Mars) I had such hopes for them to spice the story up. But they were vanilla instead.

Easily, my favorite TV show right now. I used to think that no SciFi show could touch the reboot of Battle Star Galactica, but The Expanse feels even more compelling than BSG, which is high praise! Please, please, please don't stop after Season 6. There are so many more stories to tell with the crew of the Roci.

Phenomenal season. I was on the edge of my seat for almost the entire episode. I cannot get enough of this show. What a tragedy that A] This show is not better marketed. It deserves nominations in so many categories. B] It's ending after season 6.
I know.. I know... There is a time jump. Still, what a waste of sets, costumes, etc.... The story is too rich to not complete.
Nobody's saying they'll never make a series based on the next three books. Ty Franck has described it as "a pause", that's all.

This was an excellent Season 5 wrapup. One scene that I particularly liked was when Amos realized, about himself, that without Holden and crew he was beginning to slide back to his old ways and needed to get back to them before that fully happened. God I love this show. I stupidly didn't know it was the season finale, so was double shocked after seeing what happened to Alex.

@@russt9478 Yeah, IMO recasting would have been a superior option, so I agree with you there! I've not heard what the show producers thought about this choice, their justification for not doing it - but hopefully they do say so, eventually. The choice to replace such a core character is, to me, far more disruptive than a recast, but perhaps they felt differently, and if so, it would be very interesting to hear why!

Love the Expanse. It’s the best show on Amazon & TV in general. Great 👍 story, characters and actors with terrific production. My only hope is Amazon rethinks cancelling after season 6 with so much new source material remaining. Don’t let it die, finish the story.

This is not only the best syfy show ever made, but one of the best shows period. I hope they figure out a way to adapt the rest of series after season 6 sooner rather than later.
I stumbled on this show a couple years ago.... Man what a show
I stumbled onto this show early January 2021, and I binged my way to season 5 in a couple of weeks and had withdrawal symptoms waiting a week for the next episode!
This video would be infinitely better if I believed for a second that the narrator watches the show.
But I don't.
Most narrators are hired for their voice, not their knowledge of the show. The scriptwriter is responsible for that. There were a few small mistakes, but in general it was fine enough for me.

I've been Holden's biggest fan for the first 4 seasons but in Season 5...
Camina Drummer stole the show for me.
She was unafraid to do what's necessary, even when it meant losing crew and family and even losing the respect of those that stayed with her.
But just powering through on the path that she believed to be true and not following the herd, risking her position and her life.
Avasarala comes in a very close second, for her approach to dealing with Marco and not hurting innocent Belters in that pursuit.
Any which way you look at it, this show has improved from every season to the next and 5 was definitely the best yet.
Can't wait for Season 6...!!

In light of the Alex situation and consequent unplanned death, we need a new Martian on the Roci to keep the balance of the ship representation in tact. We can’t have 2-3 earthers and 1 belter, it doesn’t work. We need a Martian. I vote Bobbie, but that won’t work with the plot, I don’t think. Haven’t read the books, so I don’t know.
The only reason I came back to amazon prime was because of the expanse.
The show helped me better understand the books. The books helped me better understand the show. That's rare.

@@kauphaart0 Seriously!?! The Man has multiple accusations of not just being abusive and harassing to colleagues but of sexual misconduct and sexual assault with fans he met at conventions. They conducted a full investigation and the results were even worse than expected.

Let me add my plea for seasons 7-9. Each trilogy of the books is better than the last, and each season of The Expanse is better than the last. Take a couple years after season 6, then produce the rest.
I have no idea if the series is profitable or not. Sometimes you've got to produce art just for art's sake. This is one of those times.
So does this mean that the "Proto - Reapers" have reached the mass relays (rings), that the ancient civilization tried so hard to keep away? How do you even fight such a foe? They're like the prophets from DS9, existing inside wormholes (pocket dimensions).

Loving how the show is developing and while the show changes some things from the books I think it changes them for the better .Only thing I hope is that in replacing Alex its a martian as in Bobbi that replaces him.the dynamic wouldnt work if it was Bull as hes an earther .But also Holdens face when Peaches came on board ....Priceless hehe.
The Expanse just gets better and better. I really enjoyed season 5. The acting was brilliant the script spot on and a fabulous cliff hanger ending. I can’t believe we only have one more series before it ends.

The dead of Alex was so... so... gosh, I can't find a word. Was the actor axed during the shooting?
He got caught in some unethical behavior.
As far as I know, he was axed after they finished. They might have reshot the ending after the fact to accomodate him leaving the show
According to the creators, the decision to kill off Alex was made before all the stuff with Cas came to light. They said they felt it was important to for fans know that major characters could die, to give things more gravity (pun for sure intended). Whether that’s the truth or not...
I understand all of that, I just think that Alex (the character) could have a more epic ending. A stroke? After dodging so many bullets ends up dying of a stroke? The flyboy deserved a better ending. IMO

I think the character Alex would have remained part of the crew for the duration - he was just too popular and so perfect for the part to elect to let him die in the show. I don't condemn them for trying to back pedal to make it appear it was in the plan from the start however.

The season was great but I think Alex's death deserved more screen time and should have had bigger impact on his crewmates.

@@manuelnunes1502 Because Alex is at that party. The seat was edited. You'll notice Holden and Avasarala look at the empty seat in that scene. The reshots were when three of them united. Amos and Holden's beard were different in those scenes.

They neither confirm or deny whether it is true (maybe they want to keep the conclusion private), but with the decision of Cas Anvar being axed, I'm thinking it was true. "Alcon Entertainment launched an official investigation into Anvar through an independent firm in the wake of multiple women’s personal accounts of harassment and assault. Per Deadline, it’s now been confirmed that Anvar will not return for the show’s sixth season. He will still be present for season 5, which wrapped production before the allegations arose publically."

When I finished the season and saw Alex die the way he died I knew immediately... #me2 did it again...
A short Google search later... Yap I was right....
When Ashford died, or any other character in the show it was always for a purpose, it always had implications and it always felt genuine and heartfelt.
But Alex just dies like that and the crew is already happy to move on a few scenes later with their champagne in their hand at cocktail party, while Ashfords death (who is not a main character!!!) was a motivating factor for Drummer the whole season long.
I dont even want do argue that you had the write him off (although it is debatable how much a persons work life has to suffer for private reasons...), but there are better ways... Why not just let him join his family offscreen between seasons? I mean you laid the groundwork already in the first episodes of S05. His Ex hates him, is son doesn't know him, why not let him leave the crew so he can make amends to his family and let Peaches basically fill in his shoes as the new pilot/Alex replacement. You could stay true to the book and let her basically do what Alex would have done otherwise and write off Alex in a more graceful manner. You did this character dirty and once more something I loved has been ruined for political reasons...

Yes I do agree with that point ,Alex'death was so badly played,I mean naomi went through high radiation exposure didn't drink water had anxiety and was pushing her body to the limits while alex died of a stroke ? Alex'ending was the worst .
Now that the 12/10 premier is just days away, I am grateful that this is here--to help me remember what happened in the last season.
I wish they had replaced the actor for Alex and had another way to kill him off, that was just too sudden and quick for what they did for a major charactor. I like the space fight, keep those coming.
Yes, I agree. It was too sudden. I wish they have few mentions of the possibility of strokes throughout this season. At least it would have soften this decision.
@@VereskVeil they’ve actually mentioned the risk going back to Season 1. They also had to add that after shooting wrapped when Cas Anvar was fired so they used a still image and added CGI and filmed some pick up scenes to reference it. This is a type of death from the books...just a different character.

Actor was fired for misconduct...they had to edit that in and do pick up shots to change the ending.
My takeaway?
One more season is not enough! This is one of the best shows out there - build on that!
(Two additional takeaways: 1. Make better merch! the current one is boring af. 2. Next time you have to kill someone off: please invest maybe a minute more to that. The Alex-scene felt a bit off, sadly)
Spoilers galore but excellent Analysis of a masterclass in science fiction television. I didn't pick up many of these themes until this video, goes to show how multi layered and textured the writing is. Indeed the Roci crew philosophy of chosen family and mutual sacrifice are lessons for everyone. The stakes have certainly been raised for season 6.
Best season yet for the best show on TV. I am just disappointed I didn't find this show years ago...

One season doesn’t even feel close to enough to wrap this show up even if you ignore the volume of the source material left to cover. I hope Netflix picked it up.

Alex and the chemistry he shared with the show's other characters, specifically Amos and Bobby, will be missed... It makes me so mad that Cas Anvar seemingly abused his position of celebrity and allegedly did whatever has been alleged about him but, after Alcon Entertainment and Amazon did something that I would consider to be a rarity in the corporate world of entertainment of today, and actually commissioned the conducting of an investigation into the multiple cases of potentially inappropriate behavior by Cas and what is said to have happened on a consistent basis, doing so via a third party. Although it seems he apparently didn't engage in anything strictly illegal, the evidence uncovered was too much to simply be ignored and was considered by the people at Alcon and Amazon to be very inappropriate, problematic and could have potentially involved underage fans at conventions and thus left them with no choice but to terminate their professional relationship with Mr. Anvar, ending his involvement in the show. Im sure some will decry this as "cancel culture" but, based on the information that is known, I think it was the best decisions that could have been made in what was definitely a bad situation.
Dont cancel this series, i would watch more 5 seasons easily
Holden's political ideology actually is "Live and let live". And it's the greatest purpose an ordinary man can strive for in a complicated world/universe ever since WWI (For a relatively long period soldiers in the trenches refused to shoot their enemies. Thus for the first time in history - in order to make the war bloody - Command discovered how false mass propaganda works). Trends in current politics seem to be very different from Holden's views however.
Best season in a while - please keep it going, AMAZON!

It was stupid to kill off Alex. If absolutely necessary, recast him, but you can't just kill him off. I just finished book 8, and Alex is critical throughout the book. I am fine with most of the creative liberties you've taken, but the Expanse without Alex really isn't the same story.
