From what i heard from others is that the protomolecule builders were either a level 2 or a level 3 civilization on the Kardashev scale and they were wiped out by a type 4 civilization.

    • @wilemelliott
      @wilemelliott 3 года назад +20

eh...not exactly.... The Builders would definitely be at least mid tier type II on the Kardashev scale, as they had not harnessed the power of the ENTIRE galaxy [that we know of...if in book 9 they find gates to other gate hubs that take them to other galaxies, this puts them at a full type III by my estimation] because they could only go to star systems where there were planets that could support the protomolecule creating a ring [star systems with no planets, or the wrong materials, or too energetic a star that would destroy the PM en route are not viable].
Of course there are things in book 8 that put them on the mid to high end of a type II but I won't spoil them.
As for what killed them...not sure they fit anywhere on the scale as we perceive it...but discussing it would also involve some serious spoilers. From what we have seen so far, we don't know if they do what they do or can do because its just a natural ability, or if its because they have "harnessed the energy" to put them on the Kardashev scale. Remember the scale relates to how much energy has been harnessed by a civilization...we don't even know if the killers have harnessed the power of their own star system, just that they were able to kill the builders and the builders tried burning out systems and quarntine, which could be the end result of some kind of plague, and not even a civilization.

I picked up on it after Drummer woke up with the guy, then went to sleep with the girl. Certainly, when both the guy and girl kissed and slept together. There was also a hint at one point when Serge caressed the other guy around the time when they were all together deciding to side with Marco. But overall, it was obvious and refreshing. . . The show takes place in the 24th century. It's easy to understand that all this largely believed idea of thinking monogamy is the way, that the world has now, is archaic and evolved.
I'm just anxiously waiting for when Amos has a sexual/romantic evolvement with a guy 😂. It's been hinted, and a near miss, in previous seasons. Now, I know they are just dangling the carrot in front of us, while we wait for it do drop. And drop hot and heavy I hope 😉.

An ex-martian pilot, a south-asian who is basically a space cowboy - accent, musical preference, attitude and all, a man who genuinely seemed to care not just about his crew, but everyone; but especially those he felt he needed to protect.

It really is not the same.
Marco wanted to control the ring so that nobody can colonize it. He did it because he knows that the belt and its people is done for: with new habitable planets, nobody will need the resources from the belt anymore. And since belters body often reject the anti gravity treatment it means the belters cannot colonize the habitable worlds, and those who can turns into normal people within a generation, which means the belt will go the way of Mars but in a much worse way. Nobody needs the belt at this point. If the belt evaporated the next day, nobody will care - except that there will be less piracy between the gate and the inner planets.
On the other hand Avasarala want to control the ring so people can colonize the planets without causing the next Black Death event which is usually the biggest issue with colonizing a brand new biome.

I kind of liked how Alex met Sauveterre instead of Duarte. In the books, he seemed awfully suspicious from the moment we first met him; and I was worried how the show would portray Duarte without giving his intentions away. But, considering how extremely secretive and carefully precise Duarte is about making long term plans, it makes sense that he would try to remain a boring, ignorable background character up until the Laconians broke away from the Solar System. Heck, he hid his intentions on a large scale by pinning the system's focus on Marco. I could see him doing the exact same on a small scale as well.

If so, where will their food come from? And not having read the books, the battle scenes are difficult to follow. For one thing, the battle scenes are quick and the ships look somewhat similar. My understanding was that the entities we saw are just there passing through everything as ghosts but the people on board do not see them.
Holden once said that he could "feel" them when he passes through the ring so I assumed this is what happens all the time when you pass through, those entities pass through everyone and Holden felt that while others do not.

Ok. I haven't read the books but this is my take on the ship disappearing. From what I could gather/remember from Holden's cryptic conversations about the ring builders etc, and the fight that was going to happen in Season 2? when they all wanted to go through the ring, the protomolecule would only allow peaceful people through the ring. If it found a warlike people it would destroy everything in it's path. Holden told everyone to power down their weapons. When they did, all the ships were allowed to pass through safely.
Ships have been passing through the rings since but some have disappeared. What if the makers/destroyers, whatever they are, made the ring gates sense hostile intention. Some ships were only going to colonise, maybe others had more warlike intent, and those disappeared. The main Martian battlecruiser had the main architects of evil on it. The ring sensed that and destroyed them. The ring has always been blue. The second I saw the red swirl I felt it was obvious that the ring saw them as evil, and so destroyed them.

With the Chetzmoka spinning/spiralling, the centrifugal force should have thrown her away from the ship, not ended up in the middle of the spiral. We see the helmet roll towards the airlock, so that direction is outwards. Also, the only way Naomi could have ended up in the middle of the spiral would have been for her to jump towards the center, counteracting the centrifugal G force. That would not have been enough to cause a "high G burn" for the Screaming Firehawk to dock.

The way I imagined it was that when she jumped out of the ship it was only her inertial force moving her though space (so in theory she would continue in that direction for ever - or until she hit something or gravitational force). But when she jumped out of the ship due to the spin the ship was in, rather than the ship rotating, it was spinning along a line like a spin ball with the rod being down the middle of the coarse the ship was heading and the ship flying around that rod with the door always facing towards the rod (middle). Similar to how the moon orbits the earth, with one side always facing the earth.
Naomi would have eventually continued past the other orbit side of the ship (at risk of being hit by the ship again) and then would have been outside the orbit of the ship. But at this stage she would have been dead. (due to running out of O)

    • @artboymoy

I have some questionable physics problems with this as well, like Bobbie said it was a short burst, and that meant to me that it stopped, but for the ship to continue in a spiral, you'd still need that thruster to be firing, right? I mean, after the inital burst once it's gone the drive would just push the ship in the forward direction.

Yeah, good catch. Also the maneuvering thruster is nothing compared to the main drive, so the curve would be very shallow even if the thruster was firing continuously until it runs out of propellant. Furthermore, its trajectory would not be a spring-like cylindrical spiral, it would be an expanding one, since the ship is being accelerated by the main drive.

👍🏼 weaving all the threads together, excellent synopsis. Since I have been reading books 5-7 while watching season 5, my memories of both mix and mingle. But that last scene of the alien sky monster structure! Woah!

    “And then there were three...”
I’m looking at where we go from here as if I were playing The Expanse table-top RPG.
Bull grew on me. I kind of hope he keeps the pilot’s seat. They may have foreshadowed that in the scene in the finale where he was drinking out of Alex’ cup. He sort of sighed, smiled and shook his head. It could be read a lot of ways without dialogue. Could’ve just been his way of paying respects to Alex, a comrade-in-arms he’d never met. Or he could’ve been thinking to himself “I can’t believe I’m going to do this.” He said he only went to work for Tycho because Fred offered him the job and he was broke.
If Bull is the new pilot, there’s no Martian presence on the Roci, the symbol of UNN-MCRN-OPA unity. So I think Bobbie will be aboard for most of Season 6. I keep going back to that weapons cache she has on Mars. All that Martian weaponry and tech should be compatible with the Roci. And it’d put Clarissa to work installing it all. She’d asked her seller about “Stealth missiles - those are first strike weapons.” She was never shown actually getting any, but that’s too juicy a thing to mention once, and then never bring back up. Now that we’re all allies, Bobbie and Bull can argue over who would’ve won if the MCRN and UNN Marines had ever gotten it on for real. Also still wonder about the roughly half (?) of the MCRN that DIDN’T defect to Laconia. What are they up to?
Avasarala should lean on Tycho; an Earth Corp; to name Drummer to replace Fred. That gives the moderate OPA a presence in the belt, UNN protection, and gives Belters a choice others than Free Navy or nothing.
Last, Holden isn’t exactly the ONLY one worried about the Protomolecule. He had Monica in his ear every time he tried to think about Naomi or anything else. She could be a useful character in Season 6, and I wonder how much of her we’ll see.
Great taking the ride with you all season, Pete. Thank you and all our fellow Expanse obsessives for all the fun & conversation between seasons and episodes!

What's amazing about the Expanse is that it was hyped as a hard sci fi show, but despite that, they have gone science fantasy - cosmic Horror by the end of season 1, with hard sci fi elements. And it worked!!!
