- Few buildings in the world have as many records and superlatives associated with them as the Philadelphia City Hall. This building in the center of Philadelphia is one of the most interesting buildings in the world in my opinion. Lived in the city for a couple of years and never knew all those details. It’s a wonderful building and still serves as a hub with underground connections to both main rail lines and to suburban and Jefferson stations for commuter rail.

This was my favorite single sight in Philly. What an amazing building, and the way the whole city center revolves around it is so interesting.
It's a shame to hear the observation deck is closed, I hope that it reopens before my next visit. I was able to get up there in 2012, just as a big storm was coming in, and it was something else. Scary with the wind and dark clouds, but an incredible view.

Fun fact they used to tell us in school is that all new buildings taller than Penn were done “behind his back” so he wouldn’t have to look at them lol

Thank you and thumbs up on the video, especially like the fact that they wanted to tear it down but couldn't afford it. The last three times I was in Center City I had to go 440 North Broad Street and because I didn't know which direction North when I got off the L, I'd walking to City Hall's Courtyard where a giant Compass was painted on the ground.

City Hall is the best building in the world! I have a tattoo of it on my forearm, took me 7 hours. Everyone told me to get something that meant something to me, and I love Philadelphia, so something having to do with the city felt more than appropriate. Everyone is always getting the skyline, but that’s always changing. What was the original skyline?

When you go up to the City Hall observation deck, can you look up for a close look at the statue?
I don’t think so. I think the windows just allow you to look out rather than up
Yes, there are small "cutouts" in the ceiling of the observation deck which allow for a limited view of Penn. BTW there are stairs inside the statue that go all the way to the top of the hat where one can exit onto the brim. It's not open to the public however.

The outside looks a bit grimey. Somebody should power wash the exterior to remove all the decades worth of pollution and grime...would look so much nicer.
Yeah I agree that it could use a power wash, haha. It's still a great looking building though.
The building was professionally cleaned over a 20 year period (1985-2005) at a cost of $80 million. A power wash of water and ground glass was used so as not to damage the marble. The main (north) portal of City Hall is now being cleaned (July, 1923).
Who was the schmuck that decided to change the color of its iconic night-time yellow/gold illuminated clock to stark white?
What gave them the idea to tear that beautiful building down?!? I bet they would have replaced it with some cheap and ugly skyscraper.
It was a dumb idea from Kevin Bacon's dad, Edmond Bacon. The latter Bacon was a city planner back in 1950s.
Liberty place and the Comcast building are made of glass. Can you imagine if something happened to these buildings and all that glass shardes fall on the people below? Such an awful mass carnage. And you would Think that they would build some kind of shield over the people below. And that doesn't even address the lack of outside escapeways in case of a disaster like 911.
When are people ever going to consider the consequences of a massive disaster?
Have you noticed that the former buildings in the early 1800s were built of brick and had fire escapes and balconies in the case of emergencies?

I’m so glad you mentioned the “curse”. To imagine a city wanting to tear down this beautiful treasure in the 1950s is unimaginable. My son just recently arrived back from his first visit to Philly and he said visiting this building was absolutely his favorite part. You need to know it takes a LOT of work to impressive him! He’s used to modern glass and steel skyscrapers, so this building took him by surprise. 😎⭐️🥇🏙
Yeah it's difficult to not be impressed by this building! Especially when you consider that it's not supported at all by a steel frame. I love the building and thought it deserved its own video. Thanks for the comment!
I think its funny that this building is being kept from the Owner...the Very Same Abéràk SamUéL that was the cause of the Abolishment of Slavery in these Lands. Urban Renewal almost claimed this, thank God it didn't.
The construction pictures definitely show steel framing and these are even from the city of Philadelphia. They could be fake and you could be on to something...it would be cool if there wasn't ant steel framing used.
There is no steel in the FOUNDATIONS of the tower which is supported by four massive 22-ft thick "Legs" of granite blocks some of which weigh 40 tons each. These "legs" rest on basalt bedrock. There is a lot of steel in the tower itself however.
