      During Sundays there will be some that are closed, but some that are opened. the biggest grocery store in Palau is closed on Saturday evenings and open back up on Sunday evenings. Some small mom and pops stores are usually closed on Sundays, but for the most part, you'll be able to fins a store that will. be open. Another thing to consider are some restaurants will be closed form 2pm-4pm. Tipping is not like tipping culture in America but tips are always appreciated.

      It is fairly easy. You can take a ferry, takes a few hours but it is very cheap, you could take a motor boat, which will take just a little over an hour and also fairly cheap, or you could take a plane. I recommend the plane ride because the views are amazing even though it is the pricier option.

    How can I travel to Palau from Papua New Guinea

    • @Tamikish
      @Tamikish  6 месяцев назад

      From Papua New Guinea you could fly Air Niugini to the Philippines, then catch on the direct flight to Palau from the Philippines through United airlines. Also you could fly to Brisbane and then catch a direct flight via Air Nauru to Palau, this option backtracks a bit but it's another option. After choosing a flight, and living accommodations, then you would apply for a Palau tourist visa. Hope this helped.

    Indonesian, Malay and even Proto-Malay (old Malay) word for "island" is "pulau" (English pronunciation: "poo-lau" or "poo-lah-oo"). The original Filipino word of island is "pulo" (not isla, which is adopted from the Spanish language after the 15th century, English pronunciation: "poo-loh"). The Spanish colonized the Philippines from the 15th century and also colonized part of the northern Indonesian islands, Moluccas or Spice Islands, bordered with Palau, at the 16th century before expelled by the Dutch in 17th century. At this period, 15th-16th century, very likely the Spanish made the term Los Palaos in the Philippines generated from the word "pulo" or "pulau". The older natives in the Philippines before the Spanish arrived very likely already called the people in Palau as the "pulau/pulo people". In daily conversation it's very common to use the term pulau/pulo people when you refer to those who live on a separate island from the mainland. Thus, this way of calling was likely adopted by the Spanish into "Los Palaos". German people who took over the island from Spain in around 1900 later changed the name "Palaos" to "Palau" and this name "Palau" was later adopted in English. But if we trace the language history and the etymology, it is very likely that the name "Palau" originally comes from the word "pulau" or "pulo" (island). An archaic name for the islands of Palau in English was the "Pelew Islands", which sounds very close to "pulau" or "pulo" too.

    • @Tamikish
      @Tamikish  6 месяцев назад +5

      I think this may be unrelated, in our native tongue we say Belau, that originates from the world Beluu, in our native tongue Beluu means village. The archaic name for Palau in English is Pelew, which in our language sounds like the word Beluu, also which is why our postal code is PLW, because of the world Pelew.
      Source: The name "Palau" originated in the Spanish Los Palaos, eventually entering English via the German Palau. An archaic name for the islands in English was the "Pelew Islands".[16] Palau is unrelated to Pulau, which is a Malay word meaning "island" found in numerous place names in the region.

    • @cosmanx1258
      @cosmanx1258 5 месяцев назад

      @@Tamikish I still think that "pelew" sounds closer to "pulau" or "pulo". In wikipedia about Palau I found that some believe the word "belau" or "beluu" originates from the word "benua". In Indonesian and Malay, the word "benua" or "banua" means big place or mega place, later it is used for a continent.

    • @Tamikish
      @Tamikish  5 месяцев назад +5

      @@cosmanx1258 As a native to Palau I am just telling you what I know and what we’ve learned about our roots and our country, but if that is what you believe, that is what you believe.

    • @tsendatsu7815
      @tsendatsu7815 4 месяца назад

      You are both partially correct, While it's likely both the words "Belau" and "Beluu" have their cognate roots in the Proto-malay-poly word "Pulau".
      The name "Los Palaos", as the Spanish dubbed it actually comes from the malay word Paraos/Proa" aka canoes, as When the spanish ship spotted a lone atoll on the horizon with a single palm tree, the silhouette reminded the sailors of the classic shape of a outrigger canoe on the sea, and so they named both that island and that general vague area of the map as "Los Palaos".
      What they spotted was small atoll belonging to the south-western most island group of hatobei and sonsorol, which the Spanish mistakenly believed was the largest island in the area.
      The Spanish planned several expeditions back but all ended either in failure or had unsatisfactory results, so the Spanish decided to refocus their attention elsewhere in the pacific. All while the Main big island of Palau was still unknown to Europeans for about 200 years until a British East indies ship made first contact and established trade on the island, this angered the Spanish, and so they again sent back ships to enforce their claim and establish their own trade outposts and to properly map out the main island.
      Source: August Kramer, Palau vol.1 p72, p216-219
      Evidently and also a bit confusing is that in early Spanish maps and writings, the term "Palaos" was often used by Spanish officials to refer to the greater region of the Caroline islands of western micronesia, including Chuuk, Yap, Pohnpei, Kosrae as well as Palau.

      That’s really sad. I was so excited about jelly fish lake as I’ll be arriving at Palau later this year. Everything I read online so far is you may see one or two gold ones and few white ones. People online are complaining that locals aren’t telling tourists that there is basically no jellyfish in the jellyfish lake. They are still charging $100 for the permit but nothing to show for so to speak. Buyer beware.

    • @Tamikish
      @Tamikish  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hello I am so sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant time. Jellyfish lake is not the same as it was when I was growing up, but due to over excessive amounts of tourists and fluctuating water temperatures, the number of jellyfish had reduced over the time. There was a point where the government closed jellyfish lake to people so the jellyfish could reproduce, and the last time I went since they re opened I saw many, but also I'm sorry you did not have the same experience. When it is gloomy and raining, the jellyfish float down to the bottom because they feed on the sunlight and come up when the rays are strong. I do agree that permits are a bit pricey.

    • @Tamikish
      @Tamikish  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@kevinhsu8184 For a while the government had to close down Jellyfish Lake due to excess tourism and fluctuating temperatures. Since they have opened and because our borders closed during the pandemic, The amount of jellyfish I witnessed was always back to how it was like before, although I since moved out of Palau and been living abroad for the last 3 years so I am not sure what it is like today. Some tips are try to go when it's sunny, as jellyfish feed on Sun rays. When it is gloomy and raining they stay at the bottom of the lake and you may not see as many.
