      @@caribbaviator7058: The 206 is an excellent aircraft if you plan on carrying a lot of weight and using a lot of unimproved runways. I prefer the 210, because it has the performance edge over the 206, yet its gear is still robust enough for handling almost as many unimproved surfaces as the 206. I do love airplane talk!

    I bought it last week. I think it feels pretty darn great on the honeycomb! I rather enjoy the takeoff quirks. It seems like carenado set a "okay, above speed-x the nosewheel steering becomes less effective." I've been flying the heck out of it into regional and bush airports. Sometimes I have an autopilot bug that tries to take me to the beginning of magenta lines rather than intercept them, but that's it.
    I love it!

    I used to be in a flying club that had a 182RG. Didn't get to fly it much because it was always in high demand, but it was a really nice machine. Cruise was around 150-155 KTAS at 75% power. It had a nice chunky feel and was a good instrument platform. The Skylane, Centurion and Mixmaster all handled about the same. I like the old school panel and livery. I'm all over this offering like white on rice.

      Thank-you for your reply. When you do get the 182 RG, it would be nice to hear your opinion of it if you can slip it in a comment down the line. I am one of those who does learn from others by reading their comments. Although I am new to MSFS, it seems like Black Square makes the better functional product, while Carenado makes a prettier one.

      @@Guerry-3 Sorry for the delay. I just saw this. I did get this add-on and am quite pleased with it. For me, the lack of systems depth is not really an issue since I always turn failures off. I practiced enough emergency procedures in real life and now, in my declining years, all I want is to have a nice relaxing cross-country flight and maybe remember what I had for breakfast. Others prefer to simulate failures and emergencies and in that case, the Black Square offerings are much better. I have the Black Square Baron and King Air and they are very good and look as good as any Carenado product. You can't go wrong with either one unless you really want to simulate failures and emergency procedures. That's the nice thing about the flight sim. There's enough variety that you can tailor it to your own preferences. Hope this helps.

    Brings back a lot of memories. I got my Commercial/Instrument and CFI/CFII in the C182RG at UND back in the late 70's/early 80's. It was a great plane to fly and instruct in. While working on my CFII, myself and 3 other instructors flew a C182RG from KGFK to KBOS and back with stops enroute at KORD and KJFK. That was quite the adventure 🙂I'm pretty sure I have a POH for it in my stack of manuals. I'll be adding this one to my hangar of Carenado aircraft.

      @@Guerry-3 Hi! To be honest it has been decades since I flew the C182RG in real life, so it's difficult for me to compare the Carenado offering to the real thing. One thing I do remember in the real aircraft the flight controls - especially the elevators - had a heavier feel to them than the sim version. Of course, that could just be my Thrustmaster settings. I do find the Carenado pleasant to fly. I haven't had a chance to fly it other than around the patch, so I don't know how accurate the performance is compared to the numbers provided in the performance charts.

I'm currently flying around the USA via GA planes so I will definitely do some legs in this baby. Incidentally, I flew into/out off Sedona a week or so ago. It was a big challenge because the wind played havoc with my approach. Not surprising considering being on the top of a butte like that. Anyway, I digress. • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Rikus,
      Yes, I found the same during the review; I don’t know that it comes down to the strength of the brakes (from memory, the deceleration rate seemed reasonable enough), but the nose oleo seems to be very “soft” on the Carenado 182RG, causing a big pitch down moment when braking. A few people have suggested that’s fairly accurate behaviour, but not everyone agrees haha.

      So i purchased it and flew one flight (one touch and go and one full stop), FR definitely not okay...i fly in VR and when the FR are not okay you will suffer. But today is quite windy here and that is things making worse, when i set the winds to calm it is better. Aircraft flies okay (enjoyable and quite true to life). Great ground friction on taxi. The front wheel suspension is for sure not okay, every braking moment you think you will cause a propstrike. The only real problem in the flight model (beside the FR) is that with max X-wind the rudder deflection is not good enough to keep the aircraft on centerline...this is really annoying. Because of that I will leave it in my hanger until Carenado updates it.

There are definitely one or two issues that need fixing but too their credit, Carenado have already put out a patch - has that fixed your rudder issues at all (I know the patch addresses the lack of visual deflection on the rudder)? Another terrific review! I feel as you do about the unfortunate trend away from quality product manuals. I’ve written several, myself, and they do really add to the experience…as well as saving the customer from lengthy searches for a PDF copy of the model’s POH. We often have to settle for something “almost” what we need. It makes me wonder if there’s a market for inexpensive sim-only POHs.
    As it happens, Carenado did produce their usual charts and checklists. I stumbled across them on their website (on the 182RG product page) just before I bought this pleasant little gem.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      Thanks very much for the info Kurt and indeed your kind words regarding the video! You’re correct; to Carenado’s credit, they did produce a manual, though there was some sort of bug that prevented the documentation from being installed haha (great to see that the issue has been patched already). Certainly though, there are many devs that don’t include documentation, or very little of it and that does tend to detract from the overall enjoyment of a product (it certainly makes a product harder to review, not knowing what should / shouldn’t work etc).
      Thanks for thoughts and again for the info! Cheers and all the best : )

    Nope, the master, ALt switches are reversed, I blame the A&P :P. The few times I have taxied a 182RG I can verify it takes a bit to get the beast to start rolling. I think it is because it is quite a bit heavier than the fixed gear 182. It also does "nose dive" like a 70s era Cadilac with application of moderate to hard braking. That sound is sooooo much like this beast's sound inside with a headset. Watching the gear go up it makes me wonder if when they were figuring out how to retract the gear on a high wing plane "I Know!!! Let's have it look like a duck!" LOL. Really clean looking plane with the feet up though. Love the look of that classic Cessna "6 pack". That wing over is a bit odd for a Cessna, but I have not flown an RG which may behave differently than the fixed gear 182, that blue tint is a nice detail done. I was surprised the Microsoft did not have the 182 RG as stock, since all other iterations of the sim since the very first had that bird as default. Great review. I'm likely going to get this bird.

I agree about the excessive roll with the stall. My father owned a 182 fixed gear, and the stall was as you described vs. what was shown in the video. But as Carenado depicted in this video, I am glad that you verified the performance.

      @@Guerry-3 Yea, it could be that roll is due to the feet being up. I know the 182s I've flown have been like big, sturdy pick up trucks of the sky. Point where you wanted to go, and they just went. The stall is docile as all else, and no want to roll right or left unless you were a clutz with the rudder, and I mean a real clutz..

It’s been a long while since I’ve flown anything with a constant speed prop, but I recall having to “catch” the RPM’s and bring the prop lever back up again, before there was too big of a drop (to be fair, that’s my experience with most addons in the sim also). Perhaps the checklist I was using, had me do the run-up at too low of an RPM then (as you suggest).

    Enjoyed the 182RG review. One nit is that in all US airspace your choice of VFR cruising altitude, 9000 ft, is an IFR altitude - your choices for a NW flight should have been 8,500 ft or 10,500 ft for traffic avoidance.

    Counterintuitive though it may be, it is ALT/BAT from LH to RH IRL. Also, I've seen a lot of blue/green tint on various a/c of that vintage (and newer). I'm so glad they correctly modelled the gear extension/retraction sequences--so cool (the B-52 is one of my favorites). I've actually had numerous AP malfunctions with many a/c in MSFS and it occurred in my most recent flight in the 182RG. Without warning, it initiates an uncommanded bank (generally to the left) that continues, if unchecked, to beyond 90° and you need to manually bring it back. This can occur in NAV or HDG mode and is obviously very annoying. Anyway, I agree with your assessments and that it's still a great plane and a reasonable value.
    So, what ATC are you using?

I don’t usually splash out / treat myself nearly that much, but I figured it would be a good “investment” for the channel and I had the idea that I might get back into some VR simming also (just for personal entertainment). Overall, I’m very happy with the new rig; in some respects it was overkill (I always knew it would be), given that I only run MSFS at 1080p, but it’s allowed me to crank everything up to Ultra (which looks great in the videos) and generally gives me enough headroom to keep everything smooth throughout my recordings. You’d think that all of that hardware, would be enough to keep everything silky smooth, but MSFS still gets the better of it occasionally haha. Moving over to a PC, is a game changer for MSFS. It opens up a whole new world of addons, mods and options : )

      Hello Rick,
      Thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
      The reasonably short answer is as follows (and apologies if I’m stating anything obvious): Carb heat is generally used at low engine power settings (and periodically throughout the flight), to prevent carb icing (which can form outside of “normal” icing conditions). So ordinarily, one would select the carb heat for the descent / approach. The primary reason for deselecting the carb heat just before landing, is to ensure that in the event of a go-around, the carb heat isn’t inadvertently left on (as using carb heat at high power settings, can lead to engine problems such as detonation).

      I could be wrong, but I believe on the GNS530, that's deviation from the flight plan path (so still GPS positioning on the unit irrespective of VLOC or GPS selection for the CDI). Thank-you sir, for your review of Carenado’s Cessna 182 RG. This is Guerry from the US again, with my oh so authoritative comment on your review. As I viewed your video, the tenor of your voice indicated to me that you were not as excited with the product as you have been with other aircraft. Nevertheless and as always, I appreciate your candor from which I am able to make a personal evaluation.
    Most certainly do I agree with you regarding the documentation not being provided with this addon. There is real life, and there is this simulator. Despite the programmers attempting to produce an aircraft that mimics real life experiences, this aircraft is still an inexpensive simulator. Carenado should provide a POH that accurately depicts the MSFS performance of its aircraft. For example: does the aircraft really drift to the right that severely on takeoff? Does it really take that amount of throttle to get the parked aircraft moving? Etc. I have not flown in a C182 in many, many years, and I cannot tell you. Even though an aircraft’s actual POH is as accurate as engineers can make it, a simulated aircraft will have much wider variations not addressed in a true to life POH.
    In regards to the other “bugs” you identified, I was not able to find any additional ones. I do wish Carenado had provided us with a turbo-assisted 182 RG. I happen to be one who is overly cautious, and when it comes to mountain flying, I like the added ability to quickly gain altitude. I always keep in the back of my mind contingencies for those “just in case” situations. For when it comes to mountain flying, full blown weather storms can develop without warning in a New York minute.
    Despite the problems you noted and the additional ones I found, I do love this addon. For me, I think it is the perfect transition aircraft for moving from the C152 into a complex aircraft. For me, the Bonanza and some of the Piper aircraft are exceptionally nice selections, but for the initial transition, they are a bit too much airplane. The 182 RG is simple and fast enough to remain a great VFR aircraft, yet it remains easy enough to lean and conduct IFR flying.
    You most likely had good reasons, but unlike your reviews of other aircraft, you review was not as detailed as it could have been. I had to go to the Carenado’s website to view other configurations of this aircraft.
    One of the things I would have liked for you to demonstrate in the 182 RG was how it handled a soft field landing. Although not as robust as fixed gear, the retractable gear is sturdy enough to handle unimproved runways as well as turf fields.
    Again, thank-you for taking the time to provide us MSFS fans a review of this aircraft. With the exception of some developer providing a C-210 turbo addon (How about it, Black Square?), for me the C-182 RG will be my choice for a next aircraft. Hopefully by then, Carenado will have listened to you and others in order to rectify the bugs you identified and correct them.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад +1

      Hello Guerry,
      My pleasure on the video and thanks for your thoughts once again.
      For sure, the C182 didn’t get me quite as excited as certain other addons, but that’s through no fault of the product; a high wing Cessna simply isn’t as exciting as a Beech 18, or F104 haha.
      As it transpired, Carenado did actually make documentation for the 182, but there was a bug that was preventing said documentation from being installed. This issue has now been corrected (I gather), so that’s great to see (but I fully agree regarding manuals in general).
      Quite a few people were disappointed by the lack of a turbo version. Personally, I was happy with a normally aspirated 182, but it would have been nice to have both variants available. On the plus side, I would imagine it shouldn’t be too tricky for someone to “mod” a turbocharger in (encryption allowing).
      Which configurations do you feel I missed during the review? I mentioned the avionics configurations and covered both panel colour options. Quite simply, the depth of any review, comes down to time, cost and personal enjoyment. Generally speaking, the review will be as in-depth as my free time will allow, but if the addon is cheap (as was the case with the C182), I may not devote as much attention to reviewing it, as with say a £50 addon. On the flip side, if I’m really enjoying the addon, the video may naturally tend to cover more haha. Free time is always my main constraint though, so concessions do have to be made.
      I’d imagine that Carenado will bring their 210 to MSFS in due course haha, but in the mean time, enjoy the 182RG : )
      Cheers. Happy flying and all the best!

      If everything is looking rather blurry, that’s probably an anti-aliasing issue, make sure you have it set to TAA, if you want the sharpest image possible. Render Scale may also be the culprit, you want that set to at least 100% (if you’re running 1080p or lower). The monitor etc shouldn’t make a difference; if my video looks sharp on your screen, then it must be a sim issue that’s making things blurry for you. Likely that was mostly due to any other lights that were on behind me in the room messing with the infrared sensor. Quick review! As usual, detailed, informative and highly useful. Thank you for effort. Typical Carenado, but... Why do I have this feeling that their team will, one of these days, begin serially releasing updates version 2? They're already doing "version 1" updates with some basic, subtle improvements for many models. What's to stop them from applying a hearty dose of "study-levelesque" to some of their best efforts, like the Bonanza, Mooney and this 182R? Maybe that Carenado would like to take the lead as THE source of "as real as it gets" aircraft production mechanically as well as visually? (I sure hope my Jedi mind tricks is working! 😸)

    • @Oni76
      @Oni76 Год назад +1

      Historically, I'm not aware that they ever have. At least on the X-Plane side, the models were decent but still relied on additional third-party add-ons (REP packages) to provide a closer to study-level experience. I'm more concerned about them releasing their products, not fixing major bugs, and stopping support thus moving on. But if their planes will work in MSFS 2024, we may see a continued support model for longer than expected.

      Who knows. . . I’m not sure as to whether Carenado would look to do such a thing, but I’m definitely hoping we’ll see the likes of REP or Black Square tackling such a project at some point. To be fair though, Carenado aren’t doing a half bad job these days; their last few addons have been pretty solid efforts and patches / updates seem to be fairly consistent, if not always that quick. Either way, I too hope your Jedi mind trick works haha!

    Nice review very thorough as always. I’d like to ask Caronado why they have changed some of their aircraft with the ability to open the windows in flight. They allow you to open the door against 140 mile an hour winds, but you can’t open the little windows? I like to hear the roar of the engine from inside and that is very visceral enjoyment for many. What is there reasoning behind this?? I understand the RG is the same way!! If you have any input with Cara Nado please request did they give you the realism of opening the window back and not allow the doors to open in flight. Once again a very thorough review, and that’s why I come to you. Fly safe stay well

      Hi Illdisposo,
      Happy to hear that you’re enjoying the 182RG!
      My understanding, is that historically, strobe lights were not mandatory on GA aircraft. As such, many aircraft were built without them installed and I believe such aircraft are given exemption (for day VFR) to this day. Carenado have obviously modelled an older C182 and the omission of a strobe light, is quite possibly true-to-life of the real airframe they based their addon on.
      Take the above with a pinch of salt, as it’s just based on a little bit of online reading, but I suspect that accounts for the omission.
      I hope that helps. All the best! : )

    Shouldn't mixture be set to full rich during takeoff? You left yours in the ground ops setting and never moved it back to full rich before takeoff. I know Sedona is high altitude but still.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      I’ve no idea to be honest, DB haha. I’ve never operated a piston engined aircraft at high altitude in the real world, so it’s not something I ever really trained for. Sedona’s elevation was significant enough, that the engine wasn’t producing max power with full mixture, so it seemed logical to me, that leaning for the takeoff would be the way to go (but of course one would have to be careful not to lean the mixture too much for the high power operations of takeoff / climbs). In short, I intentionally left the mixture leaned, but I couldn’t say whether or not that was actually a good idea. If you have any real-world experience / knowledge on the subject, I’d be happy to learn more : )
      Cheers. All the best!

    Awesome video! However people who model these non carburettor engine such as the 182's lycoming o-540 are fuel injected therefore you start with mixture lean then advance to rich once engine kicks over. Most aircraft that are fuel injected dont do it which is a shame as its a very simple detail to implement. other than that. Love it!

      Yes, that sort of accurate modelling always seems to have been lacking in the Microsoft sim franchise (unless you’re looking at A2A’s products etc). I appreciate, that starting with the mixture fully rich may not be accurate, but sometimes I have to adjust procedures to accommodate the addon / for the sake of the video - otherwise we’ll be sitting on the ground all day haha.

      Hi SirLag,
      I don’t use the Nvidia filters (though I keep meaning to experiment with them). I do spend a lot of time tweaking the weather / lighting in my videos, which accounts for much of the graphical fidelity, as that can make a huge different to how the sim looks overall. I do also tend to use a little bit of vignette for the external shots (added during editing), so I suppose you could replicate that with the Nvidia filters.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Год назад

      Hello Brendan,
      Well, that depends a little bit on exactly what you mean by “graphics like this”. To get this *exact* visual fidelity, you’ll most likely need a pretty expensive PC; I’ve just fully upgraded my PC, at significant cost and it’s the first time I’ve been able to crank the graphics all the way up. If you’re just impressed with the sim’s graphical fidelity more generally, a mid-tier PC should be able to get the job done. Much of my older content was recorded on a more mid-range PC (my PC specs are in the description of each video), so that should give you some idea as to the graphical fidelity you could expect there: ruclips.net/video/aZsS-XIEzlc/видео.html
      MSFS can also run on a console, which is probably the cheapest option overall, but of course graphical fidelity has been sacrificed in some areas and you will also be rather hamstrung in terms of modding the sim, purchasing addons etc. It is also worth noting, that I spend a lot of time tweaking the weather / lighting in my videos, to get the best out of the sim - MSFS doesn’t always look this good by default.
      I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )
