Way back in the good old days they used to say that your battery's cold cranking amps should be around the same as your engine's displacement in cubic inches..
Excellent video! I would say freshness date and warranty are the important parts. Price also varies with length of warranty but I see cheaper batteries with shorter warranties work just as good as the more expensive with longer warranty.
3:36 Reserve Capacity is so that you can get to a garage when your alternator completly fails. And it is rated to 10.5V which is a level that systems run in a vehicle. So that means you want to turn off all high current devices such as A/C, heater fans, rear window defrosters, etc. so that you do not exceeed a 25A draw. That is why it is a good idea to have a voltmeter plugged into the cigarette lighter or power port in your car to monitor battery voltage. Smaller batteries will have a 80 minute rating, larger batteries will have a 120 minute rating. As batteries get older, those numbers are reduced.
Great information. However, I heard you say that agm tends to be a little lighter than lead-acid? Every agm battery I have lifted has always been heavier than it's lead-acid equivalent.
FANTASTIC video here on all the "??????????????????'s" most consumers, like myself, have when in the market for a "new" replacement battery for your vehicle....A must watch!!!! Many thanks for this awesome video.
Hey Brian, met you once and you were a pleasure to talk to! It just so happens that i ordered a new battery for my car today, not sure if it was defective or i have parasitic drain but car couldn’t start this morning even when trickle charged. Paid more for the AGM battery, can’t hurt anything but my wallet
I would not buy a battery with a date more than a month or two old they start deteriorating the minute they put the fluid in the battery. they used to wait till you bought the battery to put the fluid in at the garage or auto center but that was not convenient for stores. I had one battery go bad in only two years that was 6 months old when i bought it most batteries seem to last 5 years till they start getting a bit weak.
Any advice for a Honda Pilot that’s rarely driven? Battery dies after 3-4 weeks every time. Autozone tested it and said it’s fine. I don’t agree. Would a deep cycle battery make a difference?
Thank you! This was exactly the information I was looking for! Idk why this isn't the first result in Google. Considering the other results weren't even relevant to my question lol
Battery post location is designed. So the Negative is always close to the metal fender\supports...So you don't short the battery removing the cable ends or tightening them...
Walmart batteries suck found out the other day tht once you replace the battery you are done even if you still have warranty left from original purchase date policy changed use to be replace or pro rated for lengthy of warranty no matter how many times
Brother may i ask my car battery is 95 AH - 450 A , if i pot 100 AH - and more than 450A is that will damage the car ( passat R36 ) ??? am grateful 💜🙏🏻
The quality of Optima Batteries has gone WAY down of the years. Don't expect a battery to last over 5 years. Sam's Club is a great choice & they don't jerk you around on warranty issues especially if you have the receipt.
JSYK: Johnson Controls sold-off its Power Solutions division back in 2018/2019 to Brookfield Business Partners, and has become Clarios. Also, Toyota has been using OEM batteries from Johnson Controls since roughly around 2013, and are probably still using them with Clarios. Toyota has previously used OEM batteries from Panasonic (formerly Matsushita Electrical Industrial International), including in around 2009. Sears has sold its DieHard brand to Advance Auto Parts, and their batteries are now made by Clarios. To market the announcement, they hired Bruce Willis, and you can guess what & why.
The question was "Can I do any damage to my vehicle by installing a stronger battery" and the answer, at 2:42, was "having more of them does not damage the car" Your problem is not that the question wasn't answered, your problem is that you're asking a different question.
What about a Honda Pilot that’s rarely driven? After 3-4 weeks the battery’s always dead. Would a deep cycle be the correct choice? Current battery was tested at auto zone and they said it’s fine. 🙄 If anyone out there can help, please respond. Thank you!
Now for a video on how to jump a battery. Older cars had a metal post for the negative contact, late model cars do not have this post so where should this negative clamp be placed? Anything special for pup starting a hybrid vehicle?
Just attach the negative on the dead car somewhere to the metal frame. As for hybrids, we had a Prius C and it a special terminals for boosting under the hood, because the actual 12 V battery was under the rear seat. The hybrid battery was not used for starting the car.
you still do. agm or not, the chemical reactions are the same, which eventually degrades a battery's internals below the point of use. keeping those batteries charged slows that degradation, which is what the alternator, battery charger or maintainer do. a battery not being used is essentially rotting
the original battery installed in my 2017 toyota prius was a 295cca 45ah battery which nobody except yuasa manufacture. so im installng a 360cca 45ah in my car. so if it causes damage to my prius, im gonna be sending a bill to Cooley!
so i have acura mdx..I changed the battery some time back and it looks like the guy put 640cca while this v6 needs around 700cca.. The problem is sometime the engine wont crank.. need o move the shifter to D move back to P and then start.. Im unsure if less cca can cause this problem
I believe there are some for cars but can be very expensive. In my country it costs nearly 10 times the cost of a comparable regular batter but is said to last up to 10 years even with start/stop tech in cars.
My Hyundai Ioniq hybrid uses a 1.56 kWh lithium battery thats air cooled under the back seats. There is a physically partitioned section for 12v and the rest is higher voltage. For some reason, the plug-in version does have a traditional 12v battery in the trunk. Sorry that doesn't answer your question though. I assume you'd mostly just need a battery that can supply enough amps at low and high temperatures.
When it comes to qualify they are all made by the same company in the USA (or about 80% of the batteries are) so they all have the same quality. The cheaper Duralast has the same quality than the cheapest Super Star and so on.
Imagine having one of the best car reviewers but making them answer car-related emails.

The Energizer acid battery on my 1986 Porsche lasted 13 years, however there are no longer for sale in the San Diego area.
very informative, clear and concise. more power to you sir
No, more power to the car. More ability to "sir."
I live where we have really cold winters so I get the highest CCA I can get and with a 3-5 year warranty.
Excellent video! Thanks for the great advice 💪🏼

Hello Dear, I Have A Hyundai Tucson Limited 2006 V6 2.7 Gazoline, Battery How Much Amp Should I Buy ? To Make It Run Properly 🤦🏽♂️ Please Help Me

2:47 the definition also includes that the battery does not drop below 7.2V in voltage.
I always get the most energy dense battery in the group type that i can find
Fantastic How To video!
It touch on all of my car battery comparison questions.
Including a few areas I didn’t know about.
Thanks!

AMG batteries are great. If you ever need more power than an Optima Yellow Top, check out Kinetic and XSPower.
@@roadshowautos whats your take on Odyssey batteries?
Calm, cool, concise, and knowledgeable - thanks Mr. Cooley.
Automotive talk need not be a “windstorm.”
Precise info and easy to understand. Thanks ❤❤❤
I’m interested in the lightest weight battery with a high cranking amp capacity.
Any thoughts ?
I needed battery thank god I didn't just buy one lol came to RUclips first to get informed. Awesome vid thanks 👍🏿
Thank you Cooley!!
Great video! Easy to follow and understand w necessary info!
How does Amperage work? I know some batteries use 90amps and others 75amps of similar size
Amps are like the about of push I believe. The higher the amps, the greater the push.

Is their a seal to break because some stay on the shelf for months -The warrenty starts when this is broken? tks
And about A/h and also A numbers dose they have to be the same as my car batter or only the 12 V is important?

@@triniwarrior16 I like Interstate Batteries
@@triniwarrior16 Kinetik. Make sure the CCA is equal to or greater than the RMS of your sound system.

Never really got a answer to the question. Is it better to get the most CCA that will fit in the car.
ForPointSix 4.6 no. It’s not better. Most car can do with only 400 CCA
The question was "Can I do any damage to my vehicle by installing a stronger battery" and the answer, at 2:42, was "having more of them does not damage the car"

From what I'd learned my guess would be no because the starter only takes a limit of amps to any over amperage will be a waste IMO.
How to find its fluded or agm bettry pleaee guide

You need to install a small battery maintenance charger. Your electrical system is constantly pulling power. Once installed it is a plug and play.

Why can't cars move to lithium ion battery
Lead acid batteries are still the cheapest way to provide a huge current to a starter.
Cost?
