I feel like I am super lucky with my situation. I've leased a horse that is owned by my barn/trainer for the past 3 or 4 years. I pay a few hundred dollars a month and I get a ton of extra riding time 4 days a week. She doesn't make me pay for farrier or any vet/medical bills. So, it's kind of more like a co-boarding situation but I sign a lease agreement. My trainer is super chill and doesn't care what I do with the horse because she knows I love her to pieces and would never do anything to injure her. We go for trail rides, I canter her out in the fields, and sometimes I even just take her for a walk down the street (in hand). LOL. It's the best deal ever and I'm so glad that I'm at such an amazing barn.
Great video. I was a little unsure how leasing worked. I am at the other end of the spectrum...older rider wanting to ride again. After taking some lessons to catch up memory and muscles, I am finding part-boarding really works for me. I get the riding time I love on a horse suited to me. She is forward enough to challenge me without the intensity of a younger horse. Finacially it makes sense as owning is too much but a lesson a week not near enough. I would recommend this for anyone who is older and not able to own. But definitely find a horse that works for you before committing. The ground is harder now! Lol!
Totally agree. Finding the right horse that suits your physical and mental and financial needs is the most important aspect of riding for an older rider.
You should make a "How to afford a horse" type video! I think that would really help a lot of us out! I'm sure you know some good tips/advice since you've owned and leased! This video is awesome btw❤

Another thing with leasing is to make sure you have a rock solid contract and specify how long the lease is for. I had two leases during college. The first one was great, owners were great and basically let me have full control of their horse as their kids had lost interest and moved on to other things, but the mother was emotionally attached to the horse. The lease sadly ended after the horse was diagnosed with navicular, but we parted ways on good terms. Second lease was a hot mess. I didn't think to have a solid contract as I hadn't had one with the first horse. The owner became increasingly more demanding on what responsibilities were mine financially and what were hers. She also started to really pressure me to do odd jobs around her farm which wasn't part of the original agreement, and often meant that I would have to skip riding for that day, or some projects for a few days. After about 6 months I showed up to her place one day and she said sorry, she's decided she didn't want to lease any more. I was heartbroken and also furious as I had put a lot of my own money into the horse as well as bought a saddle that fit him and me better than the saddle the owner had. As a college student going to school full time and working part time to help fund the lease, that was a really hard blow to take. Moral of the story, make sure you have a contract!! That experience lead me to owning my own horse and five years on I couldn't be happier.

Great video. Leasing is a great option, but it can turn south. As Maya states, always make sure you have a contract/agreement. I personally think if you lease you need to make sure the horse is a going nice horse. I've seen a few times, leasing a greener horse never ends very well, as you do all the work and the owner can profit off the work you're paying for.. With that said, if you want to lease to buy a green horse, agree on the price before you put all the work in :)
That is so true. I used to ride at a barn who would lease the somewhat inexperienced horses out to advanced riders. I paid a TON of money to lease a horse that needed a lot of "refinement". I busted my rump and put a lot of work into her. She was skinny and lean when I first started the lease but by the end, she was fit and muscular. I was super proud of the progress we made and how far she came along. She was so beautiful when she was all filled out like that.
At the end of my lease, the barn owner ended up selling her for twice the original amount she was asking for. I was like....ummmm....so, I not only covered all of her boarding, farrier, feed bills, etc. but the owner literally profited off of my work. It definitely felt like a bum deal.
I only have myself to blame though. The horse was for sale when I started leasing her so I sort of knew in the back of my mind that she would end up selling eventually (I desperately wanted to buy her but couldn't afford the $$$ on a permanent basis). I did not expect her to double in value though and it felt weird that someone else made so much money off of me. After that experience, I made sure not to enter in that kind of a situation again.
This sounds EXACTLY like what I've been through and another friend of mine. Same thing, skinny, poor horse. Get them going really well and of course the owner only sees what they are afterwards. Definitely a big learning curve and something we were too naive about! I'm the same, due to my experience I can't see myself ever leasing, unless I know the ins and outs and it works in my favor just as much.
Chloe Baxter that happened to my friend he had a off sight lease the horse started bucking really bad to the point that he could not ride the horse they fixed the horse the owner saw the improvement and sold the horse and the owner made a massive profit my friend was hart broken because he had the horse on lease for 3 years
Just wanted to say that at my barn we have the option of co-boarding school horses. They do this so you can consistently ride the same horse and then we have the ability to show them too. Also leasing is good for kids that are still growing but are showing competitively, they can have different size ponies and horses each year too. love the video by the way.
I've leased three horses for free but had to pay board at my barn. Two horses were from my barn and one is from a friend of my instructor. It's an amazing experience and allows you to try different types of horses! Since I personally know the people I lease from, they are very flexible and if it doesn't work out, I can give the horse back. I can also keep it for a while. I leased my last horse for almost 3 years. My first lease only ended up being 3 months and now I'm leasing a green horse so I can learn how to train a horse before I decide to buy a horse to train. It's awesome, especially if the person you're leasing from is flexible.

After the pandemic I’m hoping to part board a welsh pony for only £100 a month! I’m so excited because I only ride twice a month because my riding school is expensive.
I lease a horse from the barn. It's basically owning a horse without much responsability. I can't provide him everything he needs, so that's why leasing is the best option for me and him. I can ride one hour a day if I want to, but I usually go ride about two times a week and I go see him about 2-3 times extra every week. It does has it's pros but it definitely has it's cons too, like I can't do everything with him, like going outside and do jumping (he is a gypsy vanner, so he isn't build for jumping anyway) and I sometimes see other people not treating him like I would. Overall I'm really happy with my desicion.

Also with leases in the UK, (they're called loans here) as long as you give the owner notice you can give the horse back if you are no longer in a situation to provide for it - so don't have to go the the hassle of selling them. You can also renew your loan once the time is up providing the owner let's you! x

Leasing is quite different in Australia. Basically how it works is its someones horse and you ride it whenever they allow you to. You pay weekly and keep it at their property. You dont have to pay for any of the food or farrier or vet eg. In Aus we dont have "part boarding" so i wasnt rlly getting what u meant.

Part boarding is great - we call it 'sharing' in the UK, I share a pony and it's the best thing I've ever done because I don't have the time or money to own a horse so I get the best of both worlds at the moment!

I'm thinking about leasing a horse before buying. Just to figure out if it's the best option. If not, then I'll consider buying.
Our lease is actually really cheap and simple. We have a full lease for only a couple hundred a month, and we don’t have to pay for vet or farrier or anything. We got pretty lucky. :) Our horse reminds me a bit of Luna! She’s a gray Percheron cross 😁
Leashing a horse for summer is the best experience ever...u have tje whole day free to learn and become more experienced!

My equestrian offers partial lease. It is $35 per week. It is cheaper than getting lessons every week. We are thinking of partial leasing my favourite horse at my equestrian just because you get 2 days to take care of and ride the horse each week.
Leasing where I live costs exactly the same as owning a horse, and even more here leasing is 5k and owning is 2.5-3k per month

I’ve been riding for 7 years now since I was first grade in 2011-present day and I’ve never leased (im 12 almost 13) maybe my problem is I always ask to buy one but I’ve asked to lease a couple times but nope bc my barn is extremely far away and I’m not sure who else can drive me since my family doesn’t live nearby so:/

Sorry this might be a stupid question but with part boarding are you usually required to muck out stalls or give your horse hay (if you're not paying for hay)?

Do you think 1,200$ for half leasing and 2,400 for full lease do you guys think that monthly is to expensive for leasing? Because this is how much it is at my barn
yes that is very expensive but it depends if the horse is like a really good grand prix show jumper or something like that that’s more reasonable

Yeah same its 45 minutes away. I go riding there 3 times a week. My school is an hour and 15 minutes away which is kinda long.
