This brings back memories. I live in Toronto and got to meet the Gershmans at the Toronto Audio Video Entertainment Show (TAVES) at least two different years, perhaps 2014 and 2015. Both years Mr. Gershman was with his very lovely wife who was assisting. He was very keen about his innovations in speaker design. He was also a very keen observer of people's response to his speakers. Both years I got to hear his Black Swan tower speakers. Breath taking sound. His room typically had a very enrapt, hushed audience. I know because I kept returning to it! Well one of these times I got to hear on the Black Swans a singer I had never heard before : Eva Cassidy, and the song was Fields of Gold. Let's just say I was a teary mess, and I'm glad the lighting in the room was somewhat subdued lol. Thanks for the review!
My Studio II arrives tomorrow. I’ll be reviewing and speaking about the overall differences. Next speaker I invest in will definitely be the Grand Avant Garde though. You are correct. It is superb. You get a lot of the Gershman magic with the Studio II, but you’re right the tower is also special.
If I were in this to get the clicks, I'd shut down Zero Fidelity and focus more on filming videos of cute animals. :D Love exotic hi-fi that sounds good.
Awesome review, Sean! With great useful info, contents and comparison! By far the more useful review format than most professional reviews out there. Great work
I haven't heard a set of Gershman in several years , they had a model called the X1 back in the day , I loved em. Glad but not surprised you enjoyed em.
Great review. It is great to hear about a speaker I haven’t heard about. Now I bet more reviewers are going to want to get their hands on them because of your review.
Thanks Zero! Great review on a speaker not hyped in the US market! Sounds like this speaker will make you want to fire it up when you get out of bed in the morning. A very sensitive time for your ears and not a lot of speakers make you want to hear them first thing in the am.
Amazing content and bonus section as always. Thank you. Though I have noticed some of the segways in the video were louder than other sections. You can mitigate that by doing Loudness Normalization just before exporting the video. Industry standard in broadcast is around -23 to -24 LUFS. RUclips or other streaming services are around -16 LUFS. But you can experiment to what you prefer.
Yes, very useful (you ending with those comparisons). So much so that it then drives home your review of each of those other speakers, and in turn I believe really gives me a fighting chance of picking out a new speaker that I will thoroughly enjoy. (not at all something that is easy to do for those of us who simply do not have the option/means to do very many speaker auditions.
If it allows you to listen to Anthony Kiedis vocals for hours on end, these aren't just good speakers they're some kind of "magic boxes"!😄 Thanks for the great review as always.👍
Def. not for everyone, but those who 'get it' will likely love em'. Edit: It looks like Next Best Thing Studio just did a tour of the Gershman facility. It's pretty cool, especially since it verifies that their studio isn't some dilapidated left-over from the 80's. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/IoB3awJsNus/видео.html
Sneaky Sean, you left the price till the end. But I appreciate it, I would have been biased by the price. But listening through convinced me it has its value. I think you've done a great job in the equipment matching section. I'm quite sure the rest will start to copy you. It also show the depth of your knowledge. At the same time it gave me an idea of what the speaker is about, when you match it with products that I know. Thank YOU Sean. As usual, I love the comparisons, though I've yet to own a Totem. One day - I will.
Thank you, thank you! I KNOW this sound you describe. Your take so accurately and acutely, mind you, defines my previous experiences with the "listening within" aspect of recorded musical consumption - pithily denied me for so long on my journey toward the finest recorded music implementations. A Natural sounding transducer, specifically engineered to require the least mental exersion toward it's material presence as an item reproducing a signal. Changed everything regarding what I felt even possible through audiophile pursuits. So compelling, so desirable and greedily coveted this sound is upon experiencing it over time that I immediately focused on my power upgrade path to maximize this mental euphoria it induces to all listeners at a core level. It tickles more neurons than any drug could. Your music listening becomes a craven delicacy, at once liberated and sublime. Buy.
The bonus section comparing products is the best part of the review for me. The adjectives in the rest of the review do not necessarily have an absolute definition, so it is only relative to other products that the characteristics of a product can be understood.
how nice with a not so well known brand and sealed cabinet is cherry on top :) these would be on my wishlist if i had a bigger room. Gallo Acoustic Strada 2 is also an interesting speaker, bass is not important in main speakers, subwoofers completes a hifi system, also sealed of course.
I heard the Grand Studio II at the Toronto Audio Fest. I was not familiar with the recordings but what I heard was certainly impressive. Will spend more time with them next show.
Beginning to realise that sealed designs (possibly combo of sealed and doped paper cones) just have something special.. these with a Hegel amp wd sound good
Solution to stand height issue: flip them over. That might address the bass “thickness” issue as well. Also - Peachtree Audio! They have great damping and more than adequate power.
Great review. Your friend Thomas said you’d be reviewing the Gershman Grand Avant Gardes at some point. Any chance that review is coming out soon? Thanks.
Great review on the Studio 2 speakers. I'm interested in getting a pair, however you recomend pairing with an amp that can deliver lot more power than my Naim Unity Nova rating at 80 watts per chanel. Although, I believe Naim rates their amps differently, and perhaps relying more on the quality of delivery which Naim does so well. So....., what would be your thoughts? Is there another explanation, where we could say the Studio-2 speakers would perform well with the Naim Nova? Many thanks.
Really good review. Again I feel like I get a deeper understanding of what a speaker is about from you having not heard them than other reviewers. I will say these look much nicer than the Tekton DI. I personally think the DI are pretty ugly in the standard finish. And if you get the nicer finish they cost $1k more.
Zero, since we love double impact so much, perhaps it is worth to find out what its big brother is gonna bring to us, the Moab! Some of us might not might paying the extra and get a setup, if it can.
Size is something I consider. I’ve watched other reviews on these speakers. I like that they use an 8 inch long excursion transducer. 6 ohm is ok but proves high current quality is key. Bass speed is an interesting observation on your part. So many 6.5 inch drivers on the market. Purify. Hi Vi research used in Totems forest. You can only move so much air in a 6.5 no matter how much quality. It would seem that these speakers could please a large spectrum of listeners. Thanks for your review. As always, you bring great accounts using your ability to convey.
No mention of powering these with PS Audio M700's which you reviewed last year ? Nice Speakers and I just watched Thomas' review of the Gershman Grand Avante Guard Speakers. Way over my Budget but I'm sure they are worth every penny.
The Grands are well worth it but you should really give serious consideration to the Studio ll,, they are incredibly well, worth it for a much lower price.
It's not about the components its about how they work together and either the X-over. If you change any one of these components, (replace them with a component that is 10 times the price, or even one that is from your other favorite speaker, it will loose the magic ). It will not sound as wonderful.
Nice review. However, I totally disagree with your comparisons. I believe a more accurate comparison would be the Unison Research Max Mini. Possibly using their Triode 25 dac/ amp. Glad to hear you are staying on. You are the most polished, articulate and succinct. Your reviews are pleasurably refreshing. Hope you will consider sound comparisons in the future. But you do successfully convey the essence of the products with your analytically descriptive, energetic style.
Yet another great review Sean. I am a sucker for a massive soundstage where the speakers completely disappear. Can’t quite get the S400s to do this like I can with my Graham’s LS6s - but the Grahams can’t thump like the S400s. Would you say the soundstage is significantly larger than the S400s or disappear better? depth you mentioned would be welcome for sure, the s400 have a bit too close/intimate presentation for me.

No comparison against the Harbeth P3SER? Or is the Totem Double Impact the current reference? I would love to have you ZeroScore speakers like DougScore for cars just to really put a stake in the ground, but failing that, maybe have a speaker that you just always reference against...
Truth is, there are only so many comparisons I can throw into a review. Sure, I could talk about the Harbeth P3, Elac Adante, Totem Mani-2 Sig, Dynaudio Special 40s, ATC SCM19's, Harbeth 30.1's, and the list goes on and on and on.... I simply focus on the gear that I feel most comfortable with commenting on in the moment. Meanwhile, I appreciate the suggestion on a scoring system. I never came up with a way that I think is objectively fair..
@@ZeroFidelity Fair point, I think it would be useful to just pick a speaker and always include it no matter what though just to have a reference point to work with.
Thank you for providing this review. Great job with all your videos! I love how you have compared these to a group of other speakers i.e.(B&W,Kef,...) I am currently a B&W owner and looking to purchase a new pair of speakers. Prior to that I had a great pair of ADS bookshelf. These sound like what I experienced with ADS speakers Model 710 maybe. I found a dealer on the East Coast of the US that these and others. Can you recommend other examples that sound similar to these only Tekton and Burchart(sp)? BTW I have a SUB that does what I need for a very deep low end. Thanks...
Buchadt is the primary example that comes to mind. The Aperion Novus series is another. There are also similarities to be found with products from Q-Acoustics and the Polk Audio LSiM's.
@@ZeroFidelity Thank you for the additional references. I will check these as well. The prospect that I will be listing to and loving RHCP Stadium Aracadium over and over again is something I am looking forward to. With John F. back in the band who knows what is next, with the speakers suggested above it will be even better.
True story, I know Vince from Totem well and he says the Totem Fire V2 is the Monitor to kill all monitors. Given the Mani 2 has been out of production for years. The fires would be a very interesting comparison to these. Especially given the price and size
SEAN- Please note in your vids, when possible, how the speakers sound with TUBES. I have a high-end, resolving all tube rig and it seems most of the better RUclips reviewers (you’re in the top 5) demo speakers with SS components. For what it’s worth... Thanks Thanks
question Sean, do you think their bass speed would improve with a high current quality amplifier? I wonder when they are designing and listening to their loudspeaker designs what type of electronics they use ? That would be interesting to know what they feel is optimum for their designs? Not a lot of You tube videos of their speakers out there to check out. It may also be a type of speaker you should not buy if you don't have Bryston or some other power house Amp driving them. Some speakers improve dramatically with electronics which I think you were wise to point out. The Studio two sounds like a very balanced speaker based on your thoughts, would love to hear these among Gershman's other models. Finding a dealer is the harder part.
You'll get better bass speed with 1) High quality, appropriate sized stands. 2) An amp that exhibits excellent damping factor. 3) An amp with a high-quality transformer also wont hurt. 4) Pull them out around 3-4 ft from a wall boundary.
thanks, if you are a stander type that is not always sitting down to listen, can you get away with a little higher stand or would that change the speaker too much in it's presentation do you think when you were playing around with them?
@@45billyva If you are standing most of the time and move around a lot, then sure. The off-axis performance, which I forgot to comment on, is very good. Just don't expect it to sound great once ya sit down in the sweet-spot. Really though, I think they sound fine on short stands even when you stand up. Unless you're over 7ft tall, the phase should still be correct. It's all in the xover. :D
Mine arrive in the mail tomorrow. Check out my channel for another review shortly. Glad these are finally getting the attention they deserve. Great job Sean!
I totally believe in supporting the few brick and mortar stores we have left BUT the store I just brought some speakers from have spent over 3 weeks getting them to me. That ain't cool! That's a big reason why people started buying their gear online!
Thanks for producing a well done and entertaining review of these SEALED (!) Gershmans. From my speaker days, that’s the way to do it. You leave me wanting a pair of them. I recently bought some Vandersteens, and many others, but love JTR for the same reasons you like the Gershmans. .... We run a similar organization; locally sourced parts, designed and manufactured in Allentown PA, build-to-order. My company, founded 1996. I like your style, so let’s talk! Ever hear any Cherry Amps or DACs?
Sound like excellent speakers, as long as you're sitting down, and in the "sweet spot", where some of us like to move around while listening and/or have others sitting around the room. How's off-axis performance?
Dang you i can't get these speakers out of my head ! Looking for a speaker to match my incoming doge 10 , While the 10 is very airy a lil thin/ with good weight (Thomas) Guess i will just have to lay me dozen speakers to the test but dam that Gershmen is a sexy speaker and the dust cap tells me that the driver has one hell of voice coil ! ! I bet the lowend is solid ! And i love a soft dome to me its a safer speaker from being overly bright/mettalic thanks Sean !!! You make reviews look easy and its not easy ! I have to put hours and hours to capture the over all sound chacter lol
it's really interesting, the speaker set up for Treble is almost exactly the same as for Harbeth speakers. Speaking of which how do Gershman speakers compare to Harbeths?
Hi Sean!! What a great review avain!! Keep up your great work. Just wondering have you ever had a chance to hear famous Franco Serblin Accordo?! And have you thought to review Tekton Encore?! As I would love to hear your point of view how Encore vs. Double Impact compare. I have heard DIs multiple occasions in my friend's house, but somehow even I like DIs they do not have toe tapping and musical engagement factor as Franco Serblin Accordo. But I've heard the many of people saying that Tekton Encore is much more musically engaging than DI or Moab. Therefore I would highly appreciate your review for Encore speakers. As I live in Scandinavia it will be hard to take advantage of trial period. Just hoping to see a review of yours in the near future, that would help me to make a decision... Should I go Gershman or Tekton Encore direction. Anyhow Sean it's been always a huge pleasure to watch your reviews...

Sounds like you have to sit in the sweet spot to enjoy the speakers. Personally I like to walk about and still enjoy my speakers.
These Gershmans appear to share similar characteristics with my Spendor SP2/3r2 speakers.
Lmao! I was just typing asking about the hyperion and if it was good enough when out of no where you mentioned them lol.
Nice review sounds like my kind of speakers.. Is it me... Or was the price not mentioned?
$3700/PR
It was mentioned.
$3800
SEAN- Please note in your vids, when possible, how the speakers sound with TUBES. I have a high-end, resolving all tube rig and it seems most of the better RUclips reviewers (you’re in the top 5) demo speakers with SS components. For what it’s worth...
Thanks
Thanks
question Sean, do you think their bass speed would improve with a high current quality amplifier?
makes sense .. sounds like a small speaker that projects a large soundstage.. that would be fun.
Where are you located?
$3800 for the pair?!.....nice......
yes
Mine arrive in the mail tomorrow. Check out my channel for another review shortly. Glad these are finally getting the attention they deserve. Great job Sean!
Nice! Hope you like em'!
Ever hear any Cherry Amps or DACs?
....we don’t use pre-fab modules, by the way. All proprietary circuitry designed from scratch. We started as an IP development company.
From your review, this sounds alot like my old atc smc20
Sound like excellent speakers, as long as you're sitting down, and in the "sweet spot", where some of us like to move around while listening and/or have others sitting around the room. How's off-axis performance?
incredible, amazing dispersion
@@gershmanacoustics
Ofra, what is the Crossover Frequency, type, and order between the midwoofer and tweeter?
These speakers have an incredible dispersion, you can walk around the room and still, it will sound amazing
Like the beefy look
Same!
Hi Sean, what about matching this pair with my pathos twin tower amplifier? It’s 30 watts class A, wondering if it’s sufficient! Thanks!
Great review. They are out of my price range though. So it looks like its the Buchardt S400s for me.
TY AG,
it's really interesting, the speaker set up for Treble is almost exactly the same as for Harbeth speakers. Speaking of which how do Gershman speakers compare to Harbeths?
can anyone suggest whats best ? dynaudio special 40s , elac velas or kef r3s
Finally a return to a sealed design. Sadly low sensitivity leads to huge spendings on amps to wake them up.
Not necessarily
Mono bllock them with a couple of crowns and a decent Schiit preamp and your golden.
