Hunke was the last of the Beats, living on Jerry Garcia's charity -- the tow never met each other - and somehow Laki jere had access to the dying man in his waning years. A sad testament, but, similar to that of Kerouc, who disintegrated in the public eye, instead of obscurity, as poor Hunke, who outlived them all, except for Ferlenghetti, who died this year at a healthy 101.

he wasn't the last of the beats, Burroughs and Ginsberg died a year later, and I don't want to mention that Lawrance Ferlingetti died a month ago, but non the less Herbert was and still is a legend

Those who are critical of Huncke in these comments need to assess the liklihood of dying at ANY age. Life is absurd, and some die at an absurdly young age.

Yeah well listen up girlie. This guy is responsible for the foundation of the Beat generation and the writers and poets who exemplified and expressed it. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso. These guys and others tried to tell people that there is another way to live besides blindly working as a corporate lackey , consuming and watching TV and then dieing. Very few people listened. There are some of us. Show some respect -unless ---you can do better.

They freed themselves, inspired me to not work 40 years then have a short retirement usually in ill health, then dying. Admittedly, I worked 10 years after school, then headed east. It's not the years in your life but the life in your years what's most important, to me and many more, beats saying "do you want fries with that ?". There was not one person more "beat" than Huncke who inspired a movement that would change popular culture. They ripped the rules, had no respect for the status quo and lived. Huncke was a street hustler with nothing, the other beats were affluent. He left an indelible mark and his name will resonate through history as a key figure of culture. His works and communication through the medium of poetry will emerge maybe 50-100 years later, this is common in poetry, not many become established truly whilst alive. You dont have to listen to him, but a crass remark on an important guy is low-ball at best.

@@terrymckenna3382 These young kids are clueless. Can we blame them?. There are no contemporary voices to point the way.

@Richard B First off -Kerouac was the only one of the group who could be considered to come from a middle class background. Second -they were'nt imitating anyone. This is what you're missing . They were avant garde. Lastly -my guess is that you know VERY little about Kerouac , Huncke, Ginsberg, Cassady , Burroughs , Ferlinghetti and Corso. You just decided to shoot your mouth off like a backwater ignoramoose.
