very good video. and I don't understand why they don't use the same sensor they provided to Xiaomi 13 Pro and 13 Ultra. Combining the IMX989 with Sony Software, would be a killer smartphone for Photos and videos. I don't understand Sony.

To be honest, i work with Sony and i also got FX3, Xperia 1 V and i can clearly say if you use it as a professional camera, there is no other phones that can compete with his camera result, videos too. and i can also say that i did tried over exposure and low exposure editing in post production with color gradings and Xperia work really good, much better than iPhone 15 pro can do.

Very interesting comparison, all valid points you bring up. There's at least one important thing to note though, and that's the white balance adjustment feature available in the PSM modes, allowing you to correct the image and remove only the magenta tones (G1 for example). Then you can set the photo app to open up to last used mode and it's all set up for the next time you pull the camera up.
On the Video Pro app you enable it under the setting "Adjust ABGM", then access it as usual through the white balance settings. All of this is just like on an actual dedicated camera, no other brand phone has this option.

I am looking to buy the Xperia 1 V. What surprised me here is just how much difference there is between the two in your test here. My old HTC U11 has manual controls and a single lens. I do a lot of shooting through a telescope at astronomical objects and the old HTC is just fine, but I looked at the Sony here and maybe wait until I can afford a second hand one. I would be interested to see somebody take an image of Jupiter through a telescope with any up to date phone and post it for comparison. Thank you for the excellent logical comparison here.

In general, the strength of the device in M and S mode is very clear. The device is from 2021 and it beats any device in 2023, so I find it hard to believe that the 1V has such "problems". Even I'm Xperia user but Iphone or S23 still not the best. Pixel, Oppo, Xiaomi, Asus, OnePlus, Honor also have good quality camera. I'm not a Pro photographer but were these taken in auto mode because I have heard a lot of criticism of auto mode in the Sony's and assumed the point of the 1 Series was that you use manual mode mostly. Like a DSLR.
As for iPhone it is doing A LOT of computational work in the background comparing images, applying HDR, comparing and then producing a mix of them to produce 1 good looking image.
The Sony as far as I know does ZERO computational work. In auto mode is like a pocket camera - basic focus and exposure changes but that's it. No taking 10 shots then applying HDR, then comparing lightning, then producing a picture.
I think maybe one would have to manually play with settings and lighting to get the shot then edit in in post to get an ideal image
Whereas iPhone is doing all the post for you on the fly.
Have you tried doing it manually to see if you get better results? Remember, a DSLR is exactly the same - it's not computing anything, it just shoots what cones in the lense.

  • @ion_X
    @ion_X Год назад +3

I think as usual it's all processing in the end; obviously no phone is going to come close to a real camera with 35mm sensors, physics simply is. (Don't remember the exact advertising and I don't really know Dutch to interpret; it might be a bit advert talk, but it's meant to mean that it functions and works similar to a mirrorless camera, as in that it captures real data as it, to the sensor's capabilities. And that is true enough)
Although I too have noticed certain inconsistencies with the white balance in Auto mode (AWB in manual modes not full Auto mode), which I suspect it's due to, a combination of the new sensor, and therefore interpretation of data in app; (so it being a new development of new tech that will improve as the app and algorithms continues)
And also the change of moving from supporting sensors to doing and relying everything with the in sensor data itself, as in the removal of the colour sensor; and as well of the laser or 3D time of flight sensors for auto focus, specially when there isn't enough ambient environmental light
(I have a previous gen Sony which does have those types sensors, and by conducting a test of artificially lowering the main camera sensors' limits to capture light
Such as jacking the shutter speed to max levels 4000/s+ to 8000/s, a/o lowering the ISO, to the point of severely underexposing to the point of barely being able to see anything.
Then try to "meter" to shot, as in to ask the camera to prepare to shoot apply appropriate settings such focus and white balance, and from there it's clear that having supporting sensors still works way better and is more capable, to being almost unaffected by and in such extreme artificial conditions
From there you can scale back and brighten to see around when and where the cameras themselves is capable of effectively read data, for the moment in current build)
So the cameras and Sony's method is great for when there is enough light for the sensors, and gives more pure pictures, rather than faking artificially bright and flat oversharpened pictures that's typical and easily recognizable and associates to phone pictures, such as the iphones, which fully relies on processing. So it is what's to be expected
Although now Sony is also starting to implement options of more photo processing in Auto mode (such as how it's the only mode that Night Mode can work)
So for the time being I just try to set manual white balance and take it into consideration specially in low light; which is already one of the aspects of a photo-video-graphy
(P.s. I think maybe part of the reason of your video response isn't just the reaction to the results but the perception of the title)

I'd still recommend the phone for its other features, but you made a few good points in this video.
The magenta tint is present in other Xperia phones as well and it needs to be fixed. I'm also not impressed by the zoom lens quality.
Extreme low light quality is not a big issue for me because all phones will look bad, I just need to see the thing I'm filming and the phone can capture that albeit with a blue tint and a lot of noise. But the iphone is very smudgy too, so again I don't expect phones to do well in very low light.

This is a very good technical breakdown
I own the Xperia 1 V and I can agree at times it seems the computational processing is still not fully optimised .
Could be to do with face /eye tracking priority even if turned off .
Yet at times I've managed to capture exceptional images and video ,
it's all in there somewhere but I feel it's maybe relying on a mix of the Snapdragon ISP and Sony Exmor processing , they're not fully gelling.
Not many know but the 24mm uses a new Zeiss lens coating which is more blue possibly causing some issues.
The zoom and main compared to the IV is much better , zoom still appears soft when cropping , I'm thinking this is more hardware related, but again I've caught some great pictures with the 85mm-100mm yet the 125 is really noisy even in bright light. .
Seems relying on sensor feedback and computational processing there is a delay in which is doing what.
The Sony sensors also offer a really high burst rate so you'd think the readout data was optimised for maximum colour capture
It's a difficult one , Apple has very good computational processing, along with very good software capabilities by the team putting it all together.
Sony are improving but it seems for now still experimental.
I don't see this as a failure, still early days and plenty of time to improve things.
The IV improved alas not by ground breaking terms.
Still I've still managed some impressive imaging and I still Love having so many various options to create, along with the near obsolete SD card slot plus audio jack point.
On the whole Apple do release late in the year but they've put together a very strong package.
Sony have all the tools and tech but it still feels a bit like the Xperia team work on separate goals and bunch them together after .

Wow, thnx for you elaborate breakdown!

I agree it has a lot going for it! I love the controls! Being able to dial in what I want to shoot.
And being a Sony user and fan for a longtime I don't understand why they messed up like this..they are fantastic since the handycams they brought out 20+ years ago..
I hope they can make it right.

These are from the Xperia 5 II and 5 IV. I am still learning so these recordings aren't colour graded. If Mcpro24fps and Filmic pro are properly going to support the new main lens there should be a new comparison.

Hi Emiel, Thanks for making these videos. I saw your other videos as well and there are great. You are correct about the zoom lens in low light. It is terrible. This is because SONY has been using the same small zoom sensor for the past 4 years/generations while the competition has upgraded. This is very disappointing and the reason I did not buy the 1V even after using the 1II and 1IV. The main 24mm sensor on the 1V is all new and Excellent. but SONY did not upgrade the 16mm and 85mm zoom sensor. The reason I think is because the zoom sensor is mounted vertical (to the back of the phone) as part of the adjustable zoom lens design. A bigger sensor would mean a thicker phone. I hope SONY will fix this in the 1VI and I will wait to upgrade then.

@emielkeultjes I use Sony Alpha and products and had high expectations for 1V. Unfortunately I was shocked when they maintained the same zoom sensor. I use the 1IV now. I will still get a camera orientated phone. The Huawai P60 or Mate 60 would be the better camera phone. Unfortunately the OS is not Android. There are many phones with 1" sensor and very tempting. But I will wait for the 1VI (hope they improve the zoom sensor) next year. With this new 24mm sensor and and improve zoom sensor and with 4K120 and S Cinetone. Xperia is still the best phone out there.

I commented 4 months ago on my intention to buy a Sony Experia V. I have now owned it for 3 Months and for me it is perfect! I love it! I do a lot of astronomical photography and the manual controls put everything in my hands. For terrestrial use, it suits those who already post process their RAW files, etc. Most of the reviews of this phone understandably compare on it's automatic functions and does not compare too well against the Samsungs, Googles, etc. It is basically a manual camera that happens to be a phone. Compared to a DSLR these tiny lenses do not have a proper iris so depth of field is attempted with bokeh effects. The main sensor at ISO 6400 at 30s exposure in a dark sky is a pleasure, I am experimenting with Android stacking but I simply export the images to the PC for processing. If you are a party animal and need a quick moving flash shot in the dark then this is not for you!!

All good and fair points. I know for some, the goal is a photo that was taken 100% in body, but realistically when are we not working on our shots in post? As mentioned in an earlier comment, white-balance corrections are easy. I don't know; maybe I am experiencing ownership bias, but I do prefer the control from the Xperia camera over the processed looks from Apple or Samsung. Perhaps some of this can be fixed in future updates? All I know is that I use the camera features on my phone more than I do any other feature, including the phone app! For me, Xperia is the way to go, and the 1 V is an awesome upgrade from my previous Samsung phones.

14 pro does slightly have the edge with speed and overall quality, but that has always been the case over it's rivals. I believe Sony need to have dedicated Auto Pro mode having it's full potential maxed out for stand shooter's for both photos/video recordings.

Hey Emiel, I need some advices:
Firstly, I watched your previous comparison and many others, thought Xperia 1 V is good, natural looking compare to iPhone but not consistent, I thought to get iPhone 15 Yellow because I love Yellow color as pocketable computer and Xperia 1 V as pocketable camera, but if it's not there yet for the Xperia, is that mean better I just get one phone and spend the money on proper camera? Should I drop the yellow phone idea and go for the iPhone 15 Pro instead, that Yellow this time is really light too? I thought to get camera like A7CR with the unique 20-70mm F4 lens, it cover good enough ultra wide to tele, maybe 70-200mm F4 for macro and longer tele if I have the money too, but do you think it make no sense to get the smaller A7C series because even they are smaller, their still not pocketable small and make the handling and viewfinder experience less desirable, better go for the full size A7? I think Sony is slightly blueish, Leica is warmer and Hasselblad has the closed to real life look with addition of Scandinavian haze on top and paint art like quality. I actually try to get something with number 5 as it's series or name, hence the Xperia 1 V, do you have other recommendations of number 5 tech if I don't get the Xperia 1 V? I hope the Exmor T sensor technology will come to Sony upcoming RX100 and RX10 series if there will be any.

Thanks for this video. I was really into the Xperia 1V for its camera options, but your review put me in doubt of buying it. It is a pity that here in NL it is not possible to find this phone in a shop and just hold and try it for a few moments.
I have the xperia 10 IV now, great as travel companion but so bad for photos. I also have the S23ultra I see you recommending as best camera phone to buy and while it's great, I see two flaws (of which one is personal) there too. First is the weight and width. Second is the fact that when taking photos with the main lens of close by subjects, I get weird unsharp lines through the photo, like if there is a lens design fault. You don't experience this?
Could just be regular optics with a sensor this size, but it does seem to be a rather big distortion. Try to frame a letter/a4 paper with text (and be sure it didnt automatically which to ultrawide lens by checking exif data).
But then again, 0.6, 1, 3, 10 times 'optical' (and since latest upgrade a lossless 2 zoom by cropping the main sensor and using 1 to 4 instead of 16 pixel bin) is hard to compete with these days! If only it was available in the xperia form factor!

Your welcome!

I haven’t tried…It’s simple not the right starting point for colorgrading..and most people using a phone camera don’t want colorgrading do be a necessity for nice images I think..

This camera not for automaticall shooting, it is for people who know the basics things about log-shooting, about colorgrad8ng.

All these bloggers, that cry because "Sony can't shot a video as iPhone in automaticall mode" are imbeciles.

I disagree. That’s not what they will tell u in the phone store.
And the color science has good nothing to do with automatic shooting..neither the low light capabilities..

@@emielkeultjes Speaking about this phone, I know one thing: bloggers are divided into two types - those who shoot videos knowing how to press only one button and those bloggers who are professionally involved in video shooting and understand color spaces and their transformations, Color Science, logarithmic shooting, in RAW shooting, and DaVinci Resolve is a program they understand and work with easily. The second type of bloggers praises this smartphone, even taking into account the fact that Sony is not a sponsor of their reviews of this phone. Videos shot by independent bloggers using S-Cineton are amazing - such video quality is not available on the iPhone. This smartphone also records video in 10 bits. Scolding this smartphone is the same as saying: Ferrari is a shitty car because I didn’t understand how the gearbox works.

If you look exclusively at the camera, an iPhone can be a little better choice for those reasons. But... In all other aspects the Sony simply BLOWS AWAY the iPhone. Screen, audio, and speed. No other phone is complete like the Xperia. Screen: 4K. No other phone on the market has a 4K screen. OLED HDR 120hz. And the screen has no punch holes or isles that cut the picture integrity. Screen density of 640 ppi. Simply a no match. The audio is stereo with front facing speakers. This year is no match for everyone else in terms of quality. Jack audio for the headphones, expansible storage...
Sony is a better choice in every aspect. Yeah, the camera isn't perfect, even if it's beautiful. In all other aspects Xperia is a way, way better phone.
