To cut straight lines, clamp pieces of 1x2 pine and use it for a guide. For really straight lines a circular saw works better than the saw you used.

If you haven't already done so, may I suggest weighing your vehicle pre-build. I did so with mine, and then again once the build was complete so that I knew how much weight I had added with the build out, water, batteries, ect, as well as making sure I wasn't overweight for the chassis. I was able to weigh mine at a truck stop, that had a certified weigh scale. It cost me about $6. Another suggestion would be to measure your rear wheel ride height, prebuild, from say ground, to top of wheel well in the rear. Mine, since the build out, has squatted a lot, and I am now looking into installing a helper spring, to give me a couple more inches of ride height, as well as increased capacity.

Yeah, check out how much weight you are allowed on the highway. Several states allow a maximum of GVW of 18,000 lbs. if you want to travel to Canada (to get to Alaska), BC would want you GVW to be under 5,500 kg. You could take the ferry between Alaska and Bellingham but that is pricy….

@@marlenesewell8492 yes but… How much weight? It certainly isn’t unlimited. In fact, you’d be surprised at how little it is, compared to it’s tare weight. Knowing your vehicle weight before/after provides you with important and useful information.

@@marlenesewell8492 She might be collecting a lot of furniture in her new home. Some of those DOT officials may not even give her a break if she is over the limit. Adding insulation, the density of wood used in construction of living areas, a toilet and water tank, electronics: heating and cooling equipment, solar panels, all that weight eventually adds up. The DOT doesn't like their highways wrecked by trucks carrying heavy loads. All I'm saying that it's a good idea to know how much additional weight she can carry before the DOT pulls her over. RUclipsr Forestry Forest has a smaller van than her but he has mentioned that he is wary of how close he is to the upper weight limit the RCMP (DOT) allows on the highways. Yeah, he does have a woodstove but it's necessary for -40F winters.

I am 37, and had to use what little I had saved for retirement. A box truck is where I'm headed and I'm excited for the journey. I drove semi trucks for about a year just because I was in love with the tiny house idea (and the company paid for the school, so why not?). Living in the small sleeper in the back was already like a micro-apartment. I had an APU (diesel generator), heater and A/C, an inverter with a fridge cooler and my laptop, TV ... I didn't feel I was missing out on anything. Having to park at truck stops, and by using the same brand, Loves or Flying J, loyally rewards you with free nicely maintained showers. ...The space in a box will be larger than my California bedroom at 10x11, so I'm for it!
      Good luck builders!

Maybe you’ve already done it but I would insulate the empty space between the front wall panels too. It’ll help keep the living area warmer and reduce the noise from the outside world. Also I’m not sure the walls, floor, or ceiling are insulated so keep that in mind while you’re building. Might even shed some weight by removing the wood rub strips and installing lighter panel material in place of what’s in there now. Good luck, and stay safe.

You have already learned so much about life over the last two years, you couldn’t have got anywhere else. What ever you choose to do, I’m sure you’ll continue to extract value from it. Hi Mariah. Just a somewhat wild thought for the future. Some people buy houses, renovate them and sell them. Perhaps you could, in the future, alternate six months on the road with six months fitting out a van. One then hopefully would fund the other and all you learn doing your first build won't be a one off that isn't fully utilized again. The idea came to me at the beginning of this video when you had an expression of pure joy on your face after removing the middle seat in the cabin. You have already made some dreams become reality, so, why not?

Having earplugs, especially in that enclosed space, really helps. You don't need to buy them - a roll of toilet paper works really well (2 sheets, folded, rolled, and stuffed in your ear eliminates all the harsh frequencies). Also makes the construction more enjoyable, and thus, better quality results, because you're not trying to rush through the noise. A door between the front and back is a must, especially since you're living in it, and by yourself. If someone breaks into the front, gets the engine running, they can then place a lock on the outside "garage door" , and pretty much take you wherever they want to. Or if someone's breaking in from the back, you're a sitting duck. Aside from that, have fun and figure things out. Nothing like building your own custom thing, tailored to your exact specs!

You’ve got this lady! Looking forward to seeing you transform your life and your box truck! You are young and already successful doing something that you actually love doing! Most people never accomplish that. Making a living and at the same time doing everything that you want to do! That’s true success! You’re off to a great start on your next life, hoping you find the happiness that you desire and deserve! Can’t wait!

That end part...I really feel you on the self-doubt. I'm not a van life person but this year I dropped out of college and moved out to California from Minnesota. I left a steady job in a field where I could make decent money to work part-time and work on a side gig doing what I actually want to do, which is writing. It hasn't been easy and I've been broke as hell, but I just got so tired of waiting for life to happen to me instead of taking some initiative. I think what you're doing is so awesome and I'm really excited for you.

Look at glass boat hatches for uour roof. An excellent source of natural light and ventilation. Additionally, they give roof access from inside and an additional escape hatch.
Also, some rv side windows have emergency removal handles.

    • @doctorvibes5091
      @doctorvibes5091 Год назад +1

Second the boat or RV style roof hatch. Great for ventilation and access plus with the small space they provide ample natural light. I skipped side windows. With the hatch up and whole rear open you get to take in the outdoors full bore. With the back closed, the hatch still makes the box light and airy without putting any business in the street

So so so happy you built that little escape hatch thank God lol!
You're such an inspiration and if you can make a living doing this then do it to it sistuh!
I was looking today at something Amazon was advertising for rv'ers. I'm getting close to retiring and my bus is pretty much ready. I just got to do a few more things.. I only want to travel and follow the weather because I don't want to get rid of my house quite yet. I may never get rid of it because it was my grandma's. I'm just a sentimental fool.
Anyway there's a whole site for jobs for people who live in there Vans, RV's, cars All that jazz. You can work while you're on the road and I've been looking into that because I don't know what the heck I can do on the computer lol! You're an inspiration... keep on keeping on girly. I can't wait to see what you do with this box truck. It is going to be fabulous I am sure 😁❤️

I am watching your videos in no order. Some early and some later than this one. I enjoy your style. I think this whole conversion is a major process. I am not going to give you negative comments on technique. When I was in the military we installed equipment all over the world and saw my share of really crazy things done. Your skill with tools is good. You watch and learn. I know many people that cannot do that. By watching a later video the door looked like it was there forever. My GF is handy with tools. She watched over my shoulder and commented on your skills. It wasn't until she busted my chops on watching it because you are pretty. It must be my old age, as it didn't even occur to me, and I laughed at myself. You have skills. I wish I could get in a van and just go off into the sunset.

Fun channel. Just discovered . You will succeed with the box truck project. Good work.
Advice- For anyone traveling in a vehicle, get spare keys made that you can stash under the truck. Use zip ties or wire. Do not use magnet key boxes, they will fall off. Spare keys may save you from the elements some day. I was camping at Mammoth lakes when my son tossed me the car keys while we were fishing off a bridge. Yup, into the lake they went. And the bears were beginning to roam. slid under my Suburban and retrieved the spare keys. I have been stashing keys under my vehicles ever since. Better safe than sorry!

its so exciting seeing you make this impulsive journey. Observing you continuously growing and working to improve yourself is extraordinarily refreshing. I know you struggle with anxiety and the unknown. Although you've gotten used to the unknowns that accompany vanlife/life on the road, seeing you go after things that spark joy for you despite not having a plan and needing to take it one step at a time, figuring it out as you go along is so inspiring. Thank you so much.
