1.) The Doors - Now one of my faves.
2.) Elvis Costello - Can't beat those first few records produced by Nick Lowe.
3.) Depeche Mode - Even I can't believe it, lol.
4.) The Sweet - Never dug the glam scene, but props to the innovators. And they have plenty of great songs.

Why can't you believe Depeche Mode?
Those guys are Fing legendary... a huge # of heavy metal artists/bands love them! (that's why so many have done DM covers over the years)

@@blueshattrick Oh no doubt. People are People and Just Can't Get Enough (my first exposure) were the antithesis of what my crew was into back then. In my mind, I lumped them in with all the other synth pop of the 80's. Then, several years later I was in a band that covered Personal Jesus. Something unlocked. I realized they had a certain darkness to their music. I love them now. Better late than never.

I can only think of two examples, Rush and Genesis. I fell in love with progressive rock when I was 13 and my uncle gifted me In the court of the crimson king. Began collecting KC stuff and two months later deep dived into Pink Floyd and then again a couple months later I purchased half of the Yes catalogue. But both Rush and Genesis took me at least 6 years until it really clicked. For Genesis strangely enough I liked Phil Collins solo work first and it took me at least 4-5 years to fully appreciate Peter Gabriel, and even then the classic Genesis era did not click with me until a couple years later.

I’m roughly your age and felt the same way about Alice. Now I consider the 70s band peak hard rock of that era. I never appreciated Cheap Trick until I got older as well. All I ever heard were The Flame on MTV and the classic rock radio staple “I Want You To Want Me.”

I liked BOC early on, but didn't dig deep at first. In the last few years I really started to discover their deep catalog and love all eras. I had a similar relationship with Saxon. I had Power & The Glory and Denim & Leather, but lost track of them until 2007. Then I heard The Inner Sanctum and went back and bought everything they did before and since.
For me though, I would say, early Genesis. I became a huge fan of that stuff in the last decade.

Same here with Queensrÿche for me. I thought they were more of a Motley Crue type of band so I didn't expect them to be that great.

I'm friends with Carlos Alomar. He's played guitar on David Bowie albums like Station To Station and he plays guitar on the song Fame from David Bowie. Carlos even plays guitar on many Iggy Pop songs like The Passenger which is an Iggy classic.. )^_-)/

Similar experience with artists having hits during the singles period of my early teen years - Bowie, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc. By the time I'd moved on to album bands I was a total prog-head and only came back to the albums of these artists in later years.

Hey John. Well Alice Cooper for me got into early with Love it To Death album and the song 18 that a staple to anyone growing up as I was as a teenager. And getting into the 70s Alice . Seeing him twice , First the one time in 78 then in 80 with Billy Squire opening. Jay Ferguson in 78 opening saw at another time and not this time. BOC got into with Secret Treaties and the debut and On Your Feet and On Your Knees live and others picked up along the way. Saw in 76 headline with Styx and Rush opening. David Bowie got into some. have some earlier stuff om vinyl/ Queen the first album and then somewhat into after albums and saw them in 77 and really to fall into place with what they would put out. This boomer who got into along these artists right along when they came out pretty much, TC

    Wow John @Wacken 2010.
    I did 4 Wackens 2011 2012 2014 and 2015 .
I enjoyed them but unfortunately like so many bigger festivals they tend to have a rotation of bands every 2 years plus the weather seems either 90 degrees or swamped with rain lol

One that took me a while to get into that I now love is Iron Maiden. I had first heard Number of the Beast on a video game, then looked into a few of their other songs, which were the pretty well known ones like The Trooper and Aces High which I did not really care for, I didn't hate the songs, but they didn't blow me away. Then I heard a few other songs of theirs via youtube years later when I clicked suggestions after listening to Number of the Beast because it was stuck in my head and finally decided to listen to a full album. As it would happen, the first album I picked to listen to was Somewhere in Time because I liked the Artwork. I remember hearing that intro on the first track and being blown away. Turns out I love this band, just not some of their more popular songs which I've learned as I've gotten older is a common thing for me with most bands my favorite songs tend to be album tracks and not the singles.

I'm almost 51. When I was in high school, MTV played so many freakin' Queensryche videos off of Empire. I couldn't stand the band. There was some MTV competition, too, and in the commercial, one of the guitarists said, "I'll even give you my guitar... psyche!" Around this time, I was listening to _Rust in Peace_ , _And Justice for All_ , and _Persistence of Time_ . Queensryche was just too lightweight, and a lot of kids wouldn't admit to liking them. Fastforward ten years, and I finally got into them.

It took decades for Virgin Steele's legendary 90s run to finally click with me. That was really weird. It's not that I disliked the band, this was right my alley from the start, but for some reason I didn't get the hype and was disappointed when I first explored those albums. I expected something different, and I missed most of what was great about that run until much later on. For the longest time, I absolutely loved a select few tracks from the band, mostly from the Jack Starr era, and the rest scattered all over the place. I loved "Flames of Thy Power", "Invictus" (just the title track) and I loved some of the PileDriver songs, especially "The Fire God", but I preferred the original version to the cover version by VS themselves. Then one day a couple of years ago I gave the albums another try and suddenly I was blown away and I listened to most of those 5 masterpieces daily for months on end. I couldn't get enough of it. I still love most of this stuff today, and revisit frequently. I'm still not really sure what put me off of it for so long but I glad I didn't write it off forever.

Maybe it has to do with focus on heavyness and speed in the 80s. I myself lost interest in early hard rock at the beginning of the 80s, heavier, faster, extremer was the hype: Metallica, Slayer, Venom and the likes. Later I rediscovered Sabbath, Pink Floyd, hard rock and prog. The Warning in the early days was disappointing (too soft) but is now one of my all time favorites.

I've never gotten into Alice Cooper as a whole. Much respect to him as a musical artist though. He's an original artist for sure. Ah, B.O.C.! I love those guys! But being compared to Sabbath!? What were they thinking? I can't really think of any bands that I had a hard time getting into but an interesting idea for a future video might be bands that you used to be into but now don't like.

Reading the comments I want to disagree that it is age that is causing the return. I think it is the market. The popular music now is very simplistic and cheap. It's becomming unlistenable. There aren't even solo's in music now and rarely real drummers. Back in the day producers didn't try to decide what music should sell and the marketing beforehand like now. There are amazing people out there like Kimbra but they won't get the market push like others.

For me it wouldn’t be bands so much as genres : it took me years before I could really to get into classic Blues, traditional Jazz, swing cool jazz all that and Outlaw Country/Honky Tonk now all that is pretty common in my daily listening.. sorry none of those are hard rock metal
