What Happened To Lyman?

- Lyman was a pretty major character in early Garfield, so why did he suddenly get written out? And why are there so many conflicting reasons for it? This video will probably tell you haha I don't know.

Lyman was Jon's roommate, I always presumed he eventually moved out, and possibility forgot his dog.
If that was the true reason he left I don't think he'd forget his own pet dog, the place he was moving into probably didn't allow dogs so he just gave it to Jon.
yea but in the garfield show speacil they find where lyman went and he is wearing a monster custom to protect a jungle and he also met oddie and they were happy
@@avmadigan..6784 You mean they aren't canon to the comic strips, righy?
He didn't "forget" Odie. Odie was a gift. You can give people pets.
@@Tree_e888 when my ex and I broke up and she moved out, I ended up taking care of her cats for about two years. So that's as plausible an explanation for why Lyman left but Odie stayed as any.

Oh god me too
I wanna come clean with this man. Garfield's scary scavenger hunt was played at my school in the computer lab every Halloween week. And it scared the absolute hell out of me, I was so scared of it, I was told to play a different game at the front of the class where I can't see anyone else's screens. And to make sure I didn't see any gameplay that scared me, I stacked my classes lunchboxes around my computer to prevent seeing any of the game.
But then like, in freshman year of high-school. On the day before Christmas Break. I played the entire game on my own in my video class, and I can now say proudly that I not only overcame a big childhood fear but ALSO beat the game and had fun!
He did it, boys
What a chad.
Same here friend! As a child I couldn’t finish playing it but at 17 I went back and finished and it was a bucket list cross off😆
Brave confession. Nicely….played….

I felt that lyman was a good character to not have any knowledge on cats, allowing him and jon to bounce off each other well when garfield was up to something wacky. Like the strip you show where garfield is asking for the wine list
Actually he had 6 cats as a child if I remember. There names were cat, cat, cat, cat, cat and cat. He thought why should you name them, if they don't come when they are called.

My guess is that the Garfield show isn’t canon, but their explanation of what happened to Lyman is.
That doesn't make much sense...
My personal in-universe idea of why Lyman left is pretty simple. He simply got enough money while being Jon's roomate, and just left.
I feel like he would've taken Odie, but then again he was kind of mean to him.
@@nobodytheowl i think that's Jon's personality in his goofy bud

I love how everytime someone does a video like this, they use my photos of my 20 Years and Still Kicking book. It makes me smile to see how a simple Tumblr post I did spread so far, that those images are practically integrated into Garfield trivia at this point. 😅

I think Lyman wouldn’t protect animals and would beat them telling how he beats oddie
Yeah
@@coemcoem7070 maybe Jhon was tired of that ands murdered him and kept odie
he's just punishes odie when odie does something bad, he loves odie
@@internet_user975 He's just so fierce about it though. Jon has swatted Odie a time or two himself, but I don't think he damn near choked him out though.
@@mikec1222 Maybe Lyman notices he is letting his anger out on Odie and that's why he joins the Peace Corps and leaves Odie to John.
The reason Garfield talks in the Garfield Show is explained that he communicates with other animals, however humans cannot hear him unless magic or high-tech science is involved, such as in the small witchcraft saga when Mrs. Cauldron's niece uses a spell to understand Garfield. He talks to other animals, but humans hear Garfield in his low meows, along with other animals in their own respective sounds. They don't hear Garfield speak with words. Odie is incapable of talking normally though animalese without help though, so it's typically other animals translating for him, most of the time: Garfield.
I'm not sure what sounds a turtle makes to speak, but then again I'm not sure how a cat lives off lasagna.
Edit: I just remembered that the only time this rule is broken is when they are actively on the set for the Garfield Show, AKA when they're filming the show...within the show. Aside from that though, Garfield can't be heard.
I remember a similar story happening in Foxtrot where the oldest son Peter had a blind girlfriend named Denise whom was slowly phased out of the comic strips over time. Although the reason given by the creator was a lot more simple, "I simply forgot to include her for a while and by that point I wanted to bring her back but I kept feeling anxious that if I did I'd be alienating new readers up to this point who didn't know who she was".
The character still exists in theory, they are still dating Peter but it's strange to forget a character who was fairly nuanced for a few years.
Damn that sucks, Denise was great
can't believe it took me until now to watch this masterpiece, never even knew about the whole xabadu storyline
i'm stuck between either desiring a good future where Lyman realizes he's not the best with pets and leaves Odie with Jon, or that Jon got tired of him not paying the rent and now he's a captive in his basement... dungeon... thing
i like to think the reason Jon became more goofy and visibly unstable as the years went on is because he misses Lyman and is now suffering from crippling lonliness. sure, he has Liz and is thankful for her dedication, companionship and love, but she ultimately can never fill in the Lyman-shaped hole in Jon's lonely heart.
Lyman feels like a ceeepy pasta from a unreleased comic or game
Someone should make a game like that that plays out like a comic

I remember a day where I somehow glitched the game. The scared meter broke and I could look at everything without losing, and Garfield wasn’t colliding with stuff
I like to think Jon noticed Lyman being abusive so he kicked him out and took ownership of Odie.
This is by far the best idea.

I’m pretty sure the cartoon and the comics take place in separate continuities, in the comic Lyman joined the Peace Corps while in the show he lives in the jungle protecting the animals (kinda like Ace Ventura), that’s how both explanations can be canon but also not.

To me, Lyman is still chained up in the basement of a haunted mansion.

Love stumbling randomly upon the works of incredibly niche and specialized microcommunities on the internet. You KNOW you're about to learn somethin when you pull up a video like this
Lyman has one of the creepiest faces to me. It took me forever to realize his weird “teeth” were his mustache.
I always assumed a guy who was John's friend from Highschool, who was nicknamed 'Wheezer', was supposed to be Lyman. He showed up a bit later in the strips for a short while.
Lyman is basically the Garfield version of Shermy from Peanuts. Someone who is a popular character in a comic but eventually fades away.
I had a lot of these original books as a kid (5-6 years ago) and always wondered- why no Lyman in the newspaper?
I like to imagine that Garfield talking is actually just what we see, and its actually the words he is think, and Jon just understands him
That’s canon, actually. Garfield’s “speech” bubbles are actually thought bubbles.
oh my God seing Garfield's scary scavenger hunt is such a nostalgia trip for me. Used to love that game as a kid.
Honestly, I just can’t see why he got back on his feet and moved out, but wasn’t financially stable enough to take care of odie and gave him to Jon, not everything needs to be a horrific secret you know?
The Scary Scavenger Hunt was so fun! I loved playing it as a kid!
I remember playing Garfield’s Scary Scavenger and its sequel when I was a kid. They were pretty well made. Poor Lyman. Well, at least he’s found a new life.
This makes Meatcanyon’s video all the more terrifying…
As a kid I always imagined Lyman and Uncle Max from 'Calvin and Hobbes' were the same character. Both are dark-haired males with mustaches, both abruptly dropped out of their respective comics due to their creator hitting a block on what else to do with them, and we've never been told what Calvin's last name is so, for all we know, it could be Lyman. There's also Calvin's dad hinting that Max may or may not have done jail time in the past so that could explain the disappearance.
Yeah I was a bit of a weird kid.
WAIT THATS REALLY COOL I WANT TO KNOW MORE
🦀 Lyman is gone 🦀
Thank you for reaching into my subconscious and making me realize that in some point in my life, I DID play the Garfield flash games.
while itd destroy the mystery i really wish lyman would at least make cameos every now and then, or show up in a special comic like the weeklong arc where garfield met his 1978 counterpart
Damn... i never noticed that Lyman left the comic strip... i always thought that he was still there! How did i not notice that?
Lyman moved to a faraway farm where he could live happily and play with other humans

4:05 omg LASAGNA CAT! This clip is from the lasagna cat channel! It's because of that channel that I no longer watch or read anything relating to Garfield, mostly because the whole channel made me feel unsettled.
it's a shame that Lyman was taken out of the comics because despite him being violent towards poor Odie, I actually liked how goofy he was when speaking with Jon.
He's definitely my favorite, with Gar Of da Field at a close second.
Feels weird to find that Lyman was abusive to Odie when in the Garfield show Jon says "He couldn't get him to kill a cockroach"
I never knew I needed this in my life until right now. Also, those clips of the Garfield computer games opened up some deep memories I never knew existed...wow.
I remember the spooky scavenger hunt game. I used to play it all the time as a kid, and I honestly forgot about it. Thank you for bringing back old memories lol.
i want to make a creepypasta about lyman now where jon goes into the basement to see his rotting corpse chained up and jon says "hey... lyman.. how are you?" and just talks practically to himself
Do it 😊
i remember one particular comic strip, where Garfield pokes Jon and says, "I'm hungry." Jon gets annoyed at Garfield poking him, but Garfield won't stop until Jon feeds him, so they both start poking each other relentlessly. Lyman then comments on how it makes him glad to be a dog owner, only for Odie to poke him and say, "I'm hungry."
That's the only time I can recall Odie ever having a line of dialogue.
I'm honestly shocked that no one seems to have posited the theory that Lyman just left Odie with Jon, at that point a proven decent pet owner, and gotten back together with his old girlfriend.

The scary scavenger hunt game was the shit when I was 7. Every Friday at school, the teachers let us have one hour to do whatever we wanted, it was called friday fun. Me and two of my friends used to use the schools laptops and would play the game all the time, I remember being really excited whenever we found items on the list or discovered clues, and just getting to do something fun with my friends. That was nearly ten years ago… I don’t talk to any of them anymore, but I’m glad we were able to make such fond memories over something as simple as a Garfield game, even if they most likely don’t care now. And I still love creepy things! It makes me kind of sad now, but change is a part of life, it’s inevitable.
Scary scavenger hunt is my favourite flash game like this, and I looked up lyman because I remember him in the basement and I was watching a vinesauce Joel stream and someone mentioned the fact he was removed and I wanted to know more! A great video, thank you
Ok RUclips I watched it.
I was just thinking about Lyman and had no idea it was such a debated question. I grew up on reading Garfield but I was in grade school and the jokes didn’t really hit home quite yet. I had seen Lyman and he still had a certain charm being somewhat funny on a more cartoony level then he was gone mysteriously so I had began asking where did he go? It wasn’t like he was on a down slide nor gave any boring appearances that I wanted him gone. I love all this info. I’m a bit amused that Jon was hinted as being an axe murderer lol! Thank you for the video!
Lyman took up a job in the city as as an lawyer, and moved to an apartment to be closer to the law firm that employed him. He was so successful that he started his own firm, and made millions of dollars off of it. He retired young, and is currently living in a luxurious mansion in Beverly Hills.

But what if the real reason why Lyman never returned was because he appeared in exactly 69 comic strips...
You feed bad for him?
Lyman was Jon's boyfriend. He abused Odie as a way to get rid of his "effeminacy" and Jon kicked him out after they had a huge fight. Jon took on Odie and the rest is history. Jon is bi, that's why he's always hoping to get a date with Liz.
So we basically watched Johns evolution into a crazy cat person.
