  • The world is so united in opposing Russia's invasion of Ukraine that even famously-neutral Switzerland joined the effort to block access to crucial financial systems like SWIFT, and the whiny response from Vladimir Putin sounds a lot like something America's former president would say. #Colbert #Monologue #Ukraine

      Being a Russian citizen right now is watching the West going completely off the rails with their mass media hysteria and Russophobia, taking down all principles of law and common sense in an attempt at ostracizing a whole country and its people. Because they want it so bad for the "Russian threat" nonsense to be true. All you know about the Ukrainian crisis is what you've been told second hand, by your media. And you don't actually care about any of it to dig a bit deeper. Don't worry, Russia and the Russians are and will be fine - it's not the first time in history we've been under attack by the West. We can do without new iPhones. It's just so sad to see the whole "civilized" western world turning into ugly gnomes, just like that, in one day. Laughing at common people dealing with sunctions, cancelling people, firing them, excluding them from social and cultural institutes, expelling them from universities, assaulting diplomats, phisically attacking children all over the "civilized" world on the basis of their nationality - Russian. And before you proceed with your trite arguments like "they had it coming" "because Putin is Hitler" - actually read about this conflict first. Preferably past the loud headlines. And yes, hopefully this will be over soon. And so sad this has gone so far, thanks to the US and the EU escalating things.

      @@elbrujo9507 You can't realistically be condoning Putin's behaviour? We don't have to look at anything the news is telling us - we just have to compare Putin's words to his actions to see that he's wrong. He keeps talking about liberating Donbas, yet he's trying to reduce Kharkiv to rubble. He spoke of this being a peacekeeping mission, then launched a full-scale invasion. He spoke of defending Ukraine's people, then used a weapon of mass destruction (thermobaric missiles) inside of a city. If Ukraine's people are as oppressed as he says, why are they fighting tooth and nail for their country? They're not helping the Russian troops or greeting them with flowers - if they were, you would have taken the country in 48hrs.
      Putin keeps refusing to recognise Ukraine as a sovereign nation, able to make its own decisions. He tries to say who they can and can't have alliances with. He wouldn't take any other country telling Russia what they can and can't do, so why is it OK for them to tell Ukraine what to do? If Russia doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO, stop making them feel like they need security assurances from the West. Stop invading them. Every time you take more and more of their land - what do you expect them to do? Place yourself in Ukraine's shoes.
      If this was purely Russia vs Ukraine, then the whole world wouldn't be whipped into a frenzy. This frenzy was caused when Putin threatened other nations unconnected to Ukraine (Finland and Sweden) & prepared to nuke us. He blamed the British foreign secretary for that and, whilst she is an idiot, all she said was that if a NATO country is attacked, other members are contractually bound to protect that country. It's the whole point of NATO, it's no secret. Nobody threatened you. But we are reacting because we don't believe Putin will stop at Ukraine. We think he'll keep invading other countries. He keeps lying to us and threatening us - why would we not suspect him?
      Russians are good people. You need a better leader - one who actually cares about you. One who won't sacrifice thousands of your troops and cause you all financial hardship for a vanity project.

      That's a very admirable way of seeing it, but sadly it's a tad naive. History has taught us that the surest way to bring a country to its knees is to cripple the supply chains. Stop the flow of industry and commerce, and disrupt the pattern of regular society. It's been thought that action of this type will break the spirit of the population, but we know that doesn't happen in reality, but what does happen is that the country gets broken financially. This has already happened once in that part of the world - America effectively won the Cold War because they eventually broke the USSR financially by outspending them. So it absolutely works.
      The other outcome which can happen (and it looks like a distinct possibility this time) is that the population becomes so disgruntled that they rise up against the leaders and overthrow them. The Russian Revolution wasn't that long ago, don't forget. This conflict could be brought to an end if the Russian people decide they've had enough. If that looks like it's on the cards, the Western powers will put the screws on really hard at the high levels, and at the same time western agents will operate at ground level to agitate and aid the Russian populace in secret to accelerate the process.
      It doesn't even have to be wartime either - remember the sanctions and bans against South Africa because of apartheid? The people of that country were affected terribly by being cut off from the world, but it eventually broke the country financially and the regime fell, much to the delight of the people who did not agree with the ideology of their own government (after the apartheid regime fell they chose a black man as their President, so that proves it pretty well). South Africa is now a western democracy, so the tactic definitely works.

    I love watching Ukranians become the heroes in their own story. The underdogs fighting back against the mighty imperialist invaders, and seeing the world's admiration for them. I'm rooting for them, thinking of them, and praying that Zelensky and his countrymen and women will come through this safely and that putin doesn't nuke anybody. At the same time, I feel sad that the brown people of the Middle East and Gulf regions defending their land and people are not seen in the same light by the West when they're forced to fight back against imperialism. It's a terrible, sick double standard we clearly have in the West. Brown people who are the underdogs are not less than or less deserving of our praise and support and we Americans need to realize that it's bad when our country and our allies do imperialism and invasion too.

    • @Teilnehmer
      @Teilnehmer 2 года назад +1

      Ok. I get your point and sympathize. But what country in the Middle East except Yemen had to fight against a foreign power in the last two decades? Against a foreign power with deep cultural ties to most of Europe that have existed for several centuries. With very strong economic ties which have also made Europe partly complicit in tolerating Putin's ongoing aggression. Unlike a lot of of the Middle East Ukraine is also more of a liberal democracy. I don't think the situations are really that comparable.
      I am not so sure I was rooting for the Taliban as an underdog against US imperialism. A lot of countries in the Middle East while being victims of historical imperialism also colonize their own ethnic minorities and the most prominent war in Syria is not one of foreign aggression but an internal civil war. And keep in mind that Putin was a major factor in keeping the Assad regime in Syria alive. The West should have hit Russia harder back then but from an International Law stand point Russia's position was a bit better in Syria than it was in Ukraine. Supporting an autocratic regime in a civil war is not the same as invading a foreign, sovereign country.
      The case is a bit more complicated than "brown people racism"

If we aren’t careful, we’ll have someone like Ron DeSantis (Florida governor who is responsible for 10,000’s of deaths in my home state, because of his TERRIBLY stupid mask and vaccine policies that he hoped would win 45’s favor) be next in line. STOP WAR STOP STUPIDITY. Vote. And if you would, get DeSantis out of my state.
