- One way to learn new repertoire faster is by becoming better sight readers. Sight reading is also a very important skill for playing in orchestra, especially for anyone who has to learn a new program every week. The usual advice on improving is to practice sight reading every day, always look ahead, and not to stop during mistakes. But have you ever wondered how some players are able to read more challenging music? A big key is to develop and tap into our other skills and knowledge of music - the ability to combine note reading with our knowledge of music theory, harmonic analysis, and ear-training.

It's true, sight reading is such an important skill, and musicians with a great ear often need to hear this message!
Yup - and vice versa! Musicians who picked up sight reading "more naturally" should practice playing by ear! :)
@@Violinna Yes! I was just talking with a student about how we tend to be good at one or the other, but it's harder to do well at both!
Thank you for your videos - they are very helpful to me. I now know I need to spend more time on sight reading, I have been just doing it occasionally. My biggest issues are poor flexibility in my left hand / arm and instability in my right arm. I am 64 and started playing 4 1/2 years ago, so I'm not sure how much I can improve. I am going to try a "Community Orchestra" at my local Junior College - I just hope I don't get kicked out! Tahnks, again!
You're very welcome - thanks for watching!! And keep it up - orchestra will be a different kind of learning curve and what you're doing is very admirable!
Gratitude
:)
Have you done a complete series on Suzuki? Was looking for my child..
I don't have a Suzuki series, but do check out the channel Violin Garden! @violingardenacademy
@@Violinna thank you!
Do Wholfhart studies count as etudes?
Absolutely! An "etude" literally translates to "study"
Catch up. 😂💖
Me too - finally publishing one after 2 months hiatus =)
