Great songs today! Procol Harum doesn’t get enough love! ❤️ They played “Pandora’s Box” when I saw them back in 2012, when they opened for Yes. Another great week so far! 😊

Yes, I neglected them for quite a while too... So original! Wow, another amazing double bill that you got to be witness to 😀 Tomorrow's a nice mystery but we should end strong on Friday and Saturday...

Pandora's Box--wee bit of a Moody Blues vibe, with a hint of Yes. A whiff of prog is always welcome, but, uniquely Procol Harum. Great vocals completes a superb song
Something Magic: Alan Parsons Project vibes, that will do the trick. Well written song, well performed, excellent

Innovative 2nd track. I thought beforehand I'd only ever heard 'Whiter shade of pale' albeit a thousand times... but I HAVE heard 'Pandora's Box.'

Didn't think I would recall this first one, but I DO. I was 7/8 years old.
Fun factoid: Lennon had a record player in his Rolls and had their album was on repeat as they drove to a party and John already was loaded with acid.

Cool, music is the best time machine! Procol on acid...that must be an interesting experience 😏

...love Procol Harum's dark, baroque and quirky sounds... their 2006 live in Denmark version of 'A whiter shade of pale' is legendary, as is Moody Blues' 2000 live version of 'Nights in white satin' in the Royal Albert Hall - have listened to and watched both over and over again... Gary, as well as Justin, sing out their soul in those performances, and the supporting orchestras in both are as sublime as immaculate...

Can't understand. Why have we not Time Travelled to 2006 and spent the weekend in Denmark. Afterwards you won't have an award distinguished enough.

Please do Homburg, it's quite lyrically brilliant. You should check out the late King Curtis play Whiter Shade at the Filmore, superb. He was killed later that night.

Ah yes, that one has been on the list for ages! Too bad it's outside of the channel time window. I def should do it on my next 60s week! Happy Canada Day! I assume that's where you are... 🙂

The studio version was released in 1967. It didn’t get much attention. The live version with Edmonton SO was released as a single in 1972. Theatrical? It was an epic, monumental performance (nobody thought to film it)!! And it’s just within your window 😉.

The album version of "Pandora's" beats the original 1967 sample. I have a fondness for this song - the first song I consciously listened to by the band. And "Something Magic"... oh, it's just progressive rock magic. The main theme develops, there is no repetition.... there is something magical about it.

PROCOL HARUM: the music of this band accompanied a significant part of my early youth... and mainly the first five studio albums. This sound (late '60s - early '70s), these melodramatic compositions and the languid and sorrowful voice of Gary Brooker! Obviously there are some exceptions in the tracklists of other albums; “Pandora’s Box” is one of them. It's difficult for me not to admit that the departure of guitarist Robin Trower (Fender Strato) had a negative effect on my perception of the following albums. The absence of this very particular fingering which was his and which allowed him to bend and force the strings laterally in order to produce a very singular (identifiable) sound, this absence created an unpleasant void. Which made me think that Trower had a great importance in the sound signature of PROCOL HARUM. On the other hand, I like the 2003 album, "The Well's on Fire", even if Trower does not participate in it. Of course, the sound envelope has completely changed; it's more rock, less prog. Thanks.
[NB: Frank Marino (MAHOGANY RUSH), another guitar prodigy, sometimes uses an almost similar technique... except that the side fold is less accentuated.]
