Thanks took my a4 to a garage they quoted me £1,600 for a new rack and pump. Followed the video. Used 2 litres of fluid in total. The a4 runs no grating and loud noises from the steering anymore. Brilliant keep it up
Love your videos. Learned a lot in the months since I found them. One thing I noticed in this one: When putting the return line back on the full reservoir, you could make it easier by first replacing the reservoir cap. That way the fluid won't be so quick to flow out.
My van was making a very loud whining noise when I turned my steering wheel to the right and left this morning - by 5:30 pm it is almost gone. I was looking on youtube for info on it and stumbled onto your channel and watched 3 videos on adding steering fluid and how to flush the air out of the reservoir. At 74 you'd think I'd know to do this stuff. Your videos were easy to understand and very informative. I'll probably have to replace my steering pump cause I do have a ps fluid leak that has been going on for at least a year now but these steps probably gave me a little more time before I replace the pump. Thanks.
Note often there is a metal filter in the power steering reservoir and over time its gets clogged. So the options are to 1. replace the reservoir. 2. remove it and clean it out, that would be to hose it out and then squirt a little brake clean or carb cleaner on the metal filter, then hose it out (or rinse it in a utility sink), then let it dry. 3. Is to leave it on, suction out all fluid spritz a little brake cleaner on the metal filter, let it sit for a few minutes then put some PS fluid in there, mix it around, then suction that fluid out. Partially fill with PS fluid, mix around then suction out. The idea is to get out the brake/carb cleaner. Now with CHF 11s running at $20 to $37 (big box store price), that costs a few bucks, and makes option one seem like the best way to go.
I have a VW Passat 2.8 (my first VW) that has been delivering all sorts of mechanical issues recently. I have watched several of your videos on how to fix various maladies. You do a terrific job! The camera work is really good, the captions are timely and helpful; you are a natural born teacher. In addition I appreciate how you get right to work, no swearing, life stories, cats, children screaming, etc. Very professional! Thanks much for making this VW ownership experience bearable!
Thank you much. Other guys leave the hoses on and add fluid,,,then turn it back & forth,,,& take out fluid,,repeat 6 times. This was perfect. It also saved fuid.
Thx for exellent way off doing. P.S Flush good detail and u explaned it very well been look at loads vids tell i came across ur vid thx save me a few bucks and to know u made it nice and simple thx for advice !!!!!
To finally bleed the air out, I've heard you should have the car running and turn the wheel almost to lock both directions. Don't go all the way to lock. Hope this helps somebody. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you for the video. Thinking. Should I do this when the engine is not hot. Maybe the power steering fluid will burn the PVC tube I use to drain the fluid into a plastic basin.
Thanks for the video. Just did this on my Audi S3, had no axle stands so parked the front wheels on the grass. Still could not turn the wheel so had to start and stop the car then quickly refill the reservoir. Seems to have worked, hopefully has not stressed the pump!
Great video. BUT it didn't work in my truck. 97 Chevrolet Astro van. I took the return off of the power steering reservoir and sucked all the fluid out of the reservoir and plugged up the reservoir tube so it wouldn't leak. I tried moving the steering wheel left and right but nothing happened. Then I turned it on thinking that would get the pump going and assist but nothing came out I would go back-and-forth with the steering column in the fluid level would go up and down in the reservoir but wouldn't pump. What's the problem?
Thank you for all your informative videos. I was wondering if I can start my car while doing this? Like quick start and turn off? Won't it get the fluid through the system more quickly?
Would I be ok with just one bottle of those of what you used to do this change? I have some noise up front hoping I think this is it. Although I don't have any steering problems. I just know it hasn't been changed after 132k.
There's an easier way. Just disconnect the hose from the reservoir at the pump, and let it drain into a bucket. Attach another piece of hose to the pump. Fill this hose with fresh fluid and put the end into a gallon jug of fresh fluid. Start the car and quickly (like 5 seconds or less) turn the wheel all the way back and forth, and shut it off. The pump will have sucked about 2 quarts from the jug and you'll have about 2 quarts of dirty fluid in the bucket. Reconnect the original hose and top off the reservoir, and you're done.
I really enjoy your video's, and I do not mind if you say OK, don't change because someone else thinks it not correct or something. I had one question though, probably a stupid one, but did you start your engine with the hose off??
Save America No I did not, if you start the engine the fluid will probably shoot out faster than you can add to the reservoir. Just using the rack n pinion to suck the fluid in and push it out should do the trick. Thanks for your comment, cheers!
Bro ur awesome and for what u do keep up the good work don't worry about douchbags saying to change the way you are if u want to say ok a billion times go ahead
Seems legit. But doesn’t the steering pump have to be active to circulate the steering fluid? How does the fluid circulate just from turning the steering wheel?
Hello i have an 04 audi a4 and in the city i get like 14 mpg which i think its pretty bad for a 1.8, and i checked it for codes i got p2403 can you walk me threw diagnosing it Thank you.
About 4 months ago I have put some ATF fluid on my audi b5 power steering tank . My mechanic said its ok . But Im still worried about it. My power steering runs well but is that ok? How many liter did you use for the flush
VW power steering fluid from the 90's IS ORIGINAL green from factory, you guys need to respect the VW p/s fluid norm which in this case, is the G002000. If you dont, you are putting in risk not only the pump, but the rack , the seals, basically everything. The amount of fluid in the whole system generally is not more than 1 L. In most cases, sits between .7 and .9 L. To do a flush like in the video it might be needed a bit more because he is waiting for the return fluid to become clean.
I also noticed that mineral fluid only thing vw 0002000. Been running all the stores, nobody knows anything about it as usual. I can only find synthetic fluids and only two syntetic fluids that meet the 0002000 standard. Do you have any info on 1) why they recommend mineral? 2) what will happen if you put synthetic fluid which also fulfill the vw0002000 standard?
Don't you need to crank the engine so the pump works? The service info for my car says to pull the ignition fuse, and crank the engine while turning wheel side to side.
What about draining the system, fill with diesel and drain then refill with the proper PS fluid? Turning lock to lock at all times to push all the fluid out?
Personally, I would NOT use anything in the power steering system except for the specified fluid. With the cost of replacing a steering rack at say $1200 to $2500 now, I do not think it is worth the risk. If the diesel fuel causes gaskets to fail or leak, that would be a major problem and major expense. Either pay a professional to flush the system or just use a few extra bottles of spec power steering fluid to flush out the system.
+rob donell I think you just have to have the key in the 3rd position. Like you're going to listen to the radio. I'm pretty sure that unlocks the wheel
Hello, I saw some peoples tutorials and they actually run the engine to drain the fluid. Is it needed to get everything out or is it just a "faster" (and probably more dangerous) method? Some run it even dry. Are there different systems, for every system a different flushing method, or its basically all the same? I plan to flush the fluid on an Opel Corsa B, as the fluid is black and was probably never changed. Just don´t know if I should feed the system with new fluid while engine running or while off.
georg2010cz its easier with the engine running, but you dont have much control and it will drain out quick and you'll suck in air. Just do it like I did, a bit more work but you have more control. GL
RatchetsAnd Wrenches Ok thanks, I dont care if it takes longer with engine off, its just important the system is flushed thoroughly. First I was planning to put a 5 L Bottle of dexron II on top, so that I have enough time to move the wheels lock to lock. - But I am not sure how much Liter per Sec it gets.
Wow an I was about to pay for this it's easier than I thought just one question it's no need to jack the car right? Oh well good video nice and detailed I just subscribe 👍👍
Good video and I dont think he did this with assistance of pump as the intake hose was off and now way care would have started without lots of noise. This is why i think he jacked car up to make it easier to turn wheels.

Best video about flushing servo on YT for sure BUT one question comes out... 1:34 vs. 3:50 ! You take out mineral one with comment how important it is which fluid you need and you put back green one, CHF 11S which is Synthetic Hydraulic Fluid ?! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW, I wish LUCK to all Focus Mk2.5 owners with PS reservoir placed BELOW headlight, deep down... The best power steering flush procedure, in my opinion.
+Boyds100 ty ty
+Boyds100 100% agree. A lot of how to videos on power steering involve running the car and risking running the pump dry. This is the right way.
I like it man! No running the car with no oil in the pump. Awesome!
The best power steering flush video ever made. Thanks
hks571 glad to hear you liked it. thanks for commenting. cheers
Thx for exellent way off doing. P.S Flush good detail and u explaned it very well been look at loads vids tell i came across ur vid thx save me a few bucks and to know u made it nice and simple thx for advice !!!!!
i agree. one man version with smallest likelihood of getting air into pump or rack.
Thanks for showing the proper and safe way of flushing the system, this is my first time doing it, appreciate it!
Thank you for taking the time to make the video, it was excellent. I plan on changing the fluid on my Volvo XC70 and found this quite helpful.
Paramount531 np, glad you liked it. GL
Brill straight forward, clear and easy to follow. mega video Bro! Cheers!!!
Very nice tool for change Power Steering Fluid on my Audi A4 b6 1.9TDI release 2002 with 96 kW.Many Greetings from Gernany!
by far the best and safest way to do a proper full flush, thanks allot for this very helpful video
Slow but saves the pump running dry just did this man thanks for saving me 150 bucks mate all the way from australia

very well made and informative! I liked how you explained the process of bleeding out the air too
Thanks for the video. Just did this on my Audi S3, had no axle stands so parked the front wheels on the grass. Still could not turn the wheel so had to start and stop the car then quickly refill the reservoir. Seems to have worked, hopefully has not stressed the pump!
By far the best video for this job.
Best flush video on youtube
you can also spot the return line because the line that supplies the pump has a high pressure fitting on it. the return line has only a clamp.
Thanks!
the best video ive seen on this, brilliant work keep it up
awesome video but i have a question. Isnt it better to start the car to pump the fluid and clean the vane pump as well?
Very helpful video man mine is dirt blk seems i will need to do this soon.
Nice and informative video. What should I use to stop up the bottom of the power steering fluid reservoir's return line?
thank you so much. finally a video that is right to the point and gets it done.
Hola, de que pais es usted? Uste sabe mucho de los audi B5's. Bien hecho, bravo.
This i was looking for! Thanky, I will do this next week!!!
Thank you for this video. It could not be any better. 🙂
When you're bleeding it with the engine running do you put the cap on or leave it off? Merci dadash
Should the power steering fluid be filled up to low mark or high mark(when engine is cold)? on cap dipstick ... for 2003 passat 1.8t?
Six years old and still a good video. Cheers....aaahhchooo.🤧.
Great video! Thank you just what I needed to know. I'm doing this on our snow plow truck tomorrow👍
I don't think this completely flushes the system
I kept turning the steering wheel a bunch more times but I crashed into another car at the intersection and caused a 18 car pile-up.
Great Video, Thanks for clear and friendly advice!
Thank you friend. My learning continues :-)
Good video.. easy step by step explanation.
Very good video. Thanks 👍
Perfect video for my 2000 VW Passat.
Good info thanks! Anyone know the inner diameter of the return hose?
Say I drove a couple thousand miles with brown fluid, without knowing of course, would it damage my pump?
hey...what color was your old fluid when you flushed it...red or green?
very helpful videos. thanks
very easy to follow, thanks! Any new videos coming from you?
Is it true that you could convert these cars to run on regular power steering fluid? Basically just drain this mineral oil and put in regular fluid.
Does this method remove all of the old fluid inside the rack?
common after you turn the steering last time ,you connect all first then you top it up this way no lost and spill of expensive fluid .
Bro ur awesome and for what u do keep up the good work don't worry about douchbags saying to change the way you are if u want to say ok a billion times go ahead
Jose Amaya ha its ok, I dont mind constructive criticism. Thanks for your comment, cheers!
can I top the fluid up with Dextron or generally market brand fluid? or the special Audi fluid?
Seems legit. But doesn’t the steering pump have to be active to circulate the steering fluid?
How does the fluid circulate just from turning the steering wheel?
about how much fluid did u use to top it off? it 1 liter enough?
Hello i have an 04 audi a4 and in the city i get like 14 mpg which i think its pretty bad for a 1.8, and i checked it for codes i got p2403 can you walk me threw diagnosing it

Your videos aren't that bad. One GIANT suggestion though. Quit saying OK so much. You said it 21 times in less than 7 minutes. Thank you.
Gray Stone haha yes I know, bit of a habit. Good suggestion, keep them coming. cheers
Nice video. Very detailed.
Awesome video man! Thanks!!

I have a toyota camry le 08 can I use dexron 6 on my powerstreering fluid
Can you first flush it with a lower grade power steering fluid before filling it with the $23/liter fluid?
Do not mix the Pentosin (VW/ AUDI fluid) with anything else !!!!
Thanks!!! Just what i need it to know
Do you have a video replacing the pressure line?
So, I should flush my system "before: I install a new P/S/ pump?
Good simple video mon!

exactly what i wanted to know. thanks!
Ì had to do this very same on my 190E, grat video and agree with the crappy audio on the camera.. lol
gianfrancoa yea the audio was unbearable..oh well on the hunt for a different one now.
Wow an I was about to pay for this it's easier than I thought just one question it's no need to jack the car right? Oh well good video nice and detailed I just subscribe 👍👍
The steering will be easier to turn with 1 or both wheels jacked uo
excellent vid. Thanks!
Great Video Thanks a Mill!!!
Nice video, correct information!
hello...while you flush..right left the strearing..engine running?
No!

Thanks for the help
Very informative!
Good video!
ur videos are awesome
Nice video just ask u question do we have to turn on the car while turining the steering wheel?thanks!!
No. Don't turn the engine on.
Best God-damn video on this subject.
What size hose are you using? 3/8" ID?
Seems easy enough 👍
How many litres you need for this ?
Good video
