First and foremost, I adore Paul Anka, a true natural. However, I wish he would have given Herve Villard and C.Francois credit for writing the French song in 1967. Anka hearing the song while watching French television in Paris, bought the song's publication and adapted it by writing English lyrics.

Hear hear. "My lyric", not "My song"!!! The music was French, the song already a hit in France ("Comme d'habitude"), but M. Anka always minimizes this aspect and refers to it as if he just picked up some melody when he was in France. Agreed, it would never have become the classic smash that it is without his genius lyric (which really is genius) but credit where credit is due!

Piers Morgan obviously gave too much credit to Paul Anka by calling him the one who wrote the song, I'm glad Paul didn't recognize that honor.

As a musician it's probably more natural for him to call a song a melody since that is what a song is, an arrangement of sounds in an appealing way. As a songwriter or lyricist that kind of vocabulary/terminology is common, I don't think he was trying to downplay whoever wrote the melody, he just trying to explain his part in how Sinatra's version came about.

Anka, and the public, tends to downplay the fact that 90% of the song is really the melody. As the world knows by now it was a French chanson, Comme d'Habitude, which actually sounds better in the original French with the repetition of the French title instead of the words "my way."
Moreover Anka's lyrics are stilted and hardly memorable ("then you have not," "I ate it up and spit it out," "not the words of one who kneels," etc.). It's really Sinatra and the aura of his career that made the song.
Anka was never a good lyricist, though it's impressive how he came up with so many of those teen melodies. "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is one of those songs that seems to have always been around. I've only felt that about one other song, Stevie Wonder's "I've Just Called to Say I Love You." There are others, such as "Lonely Boy," "Puppy Love," and even the Theme to "The Longest Day."
But Anka as a lyricist mainly relied on juvenile predictable rhymes such as "love/up above," "destiny/reverie," and the like. He does make use of clever metaphors at times ("Adam and Eve," for example) and despite the awful timbre of his voice, he had a remarkably strong voice.

Difference of opinion is what makes horse races, as Mark Twain wrote. And I never heard of Anka's song sung at funerals. To me it wouldn't even make sense, since the song says he's "facing the final curtain" not facing the Last Judgment. I would never have that played at my funeral. I would think other pieces far more appropriate. But each to their own. I never step on another person's opinion, like an actor never stepping on another actor's lines or "upstaging." But just as rationally, the actor insists on the lines assigned to him in the play, and I insist on my opinion. In any case, it seems that the song will soon become the most covered song in history since every singer will insist on recording it at some point in their later career! Maybe not even "White Christmas" will be covered that much.

I never contradicted you so there's no need to google. I would never want that song played. I'd prefer Sidney Bechet's "Bechet's Creole Blues" (one of the greatest funeral dirges ever wailed this side of Heaven) or Mahler's Adagietto from the Fifth Symphony or any andante from a Bach partita. But each to their own. We're not likely to posthumously enjoy it anyway, so the issue is academic.

Agreed - Paul Anka, who is very talented, but isn't the driving force behind this amazing song - but, the lyrics the world knows are his. The melody/music are by a French man. It's Frank Sinatra who makes this song happen, that the world knows. A heap of happy accidents that works.

Paul Anka bought the rights to the song, it doesn't matter about the quality of the lyrics, he can do what he likes , the fact that you think the original is better is up to you but its far to late to change the fact that My Way was a massive hit record Thibault, Francois, Revauare are all credited with writing it so there is no problem..

In other words, he didn't write the song at all.....but just wrote a new English lyric to a French song....a lyric with no connection to the original lyric.

He did what hundreds of songwriters do, added English lyrics to a foreign tune, He actually bought the rights to the music cheaply cos it had only been a minor hi in Francet, good on ya Paul...

Anka and Sinatra turned a limited little tuned from France with no chance of airplay or record sales beyond francophone nations into a global winner for which I'm sure the French composers of the melody were quite handsomely rewarded financially, certainly far much more than they would have been if Comme D'Habitude had never been 'covered'.

Ever HEAR the original - or David Bowie's attempt to do an English version? Yeah - David Bowie got there first. Sinatra made "My Way" a success (and got tired by the song after a while, too). And no - adding words to a song isn't sampling. And HELL NO, every great artist has NOT been sampling since music has existed. You make it sound like all musicians steal, like that's a talent. Hey, someone has to come up with the original, right? THAT person is the artist, not the person who "samples" it.

Paul Anka is a liar he didn't write the song originally "My Way" is based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" co-composed, co-written and performed in 1967 by Claude François. Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French song.

Paul Anka wrote his own lyrics to Claude's Melody so, Paul Anka deserves credit for writing the Lyrics to My Way but Claude deserves credit for the Melody and the original idea.
Sadly most people in America don't know who Claude Francois is and he never got the recognition he really deserved!!!!.

So, why don't they say that their english enterpretation is from a french composer's song. I love Frank's or Elvis or any american versions, but at least, they should mention that this song is a "french song" from Claude François. Is it too humiliating for them to do so ? Americans didn't created the world you know !

Without the English lyrics and the Sinatra interpretion the french tune would have remained unknown.
About the appropriation..the French are masters in taking for themselves the merits of others artists, like the Louvre filled mostly with Italian masterpieces ...
Modigliani was from Livorno in Tuscany and they make him pass for French...
