The answer to the neck being aged is because this is based on J’s vintage refin. So J’s actual instrument has an old neck on a old guitar with a paint job that’s only about 20 some years old. Therefore the body sports hardly any wear. You have to understand what it is this guitar is modeled after to understand why it is what it is.
Glad you noted the aged neck v. the fresh, shiny body. But I figured it because I heard J refinished the body to that sparkly finish after he acquired the guitar. So the neck was all worn in--his addition was the brand new finish. So the guitar sort of relfects that moment in his guitar's existence. Great demo, thanks! 🤙🤓
On aged neck and regular body: Mascis had a vintage guitar and repainted the body. PS: Well done, on the video / wig ! I ended up buying one of these guitars and I thought your review and tones were representative. I was surprised that the neck and pickups tone ended up being so good, and this model, or at least my guitar, has really excellent clean vintage tele tone--something I'd expect from a more expensive tele, perhaps even custom shop.
They are custom pickups wound to sound like his ‘58. One of the advantages of the Brad Paisley, Christie Hynde, Jason Isbell and J Mascis models is the nitro finish and custom necks and pickups.
As cool as this Tele is & as much of an inspiration as J Mascis has been to me (he’s the reason I play a Jazzmaster) I think I like the Jason Isbell sig better. Both are pretty damn cool though.
I just got one, great guitar! Needed a little tweaking out of the box, but sounds excellent and a lot of fun to play. The color is even nicer in person :)
That’s a great looking guitar. The neck looks comfortable. I think I’d enjoy a played in neck. The pick guard is intriguing. Is it plastic with a mirror paint on the back? Thanks for the demo.
I don't mean for this to sound like a bash on J but I think the Mascis Squire was so successful because it was dollar for dollar the best Jazzmaster. I think J is a fantastic player and artist but I dont think he has the 1300 dollar Mexican tele clout ya know? Not that there's anything wrong with mim fenders I'm saving up for a vintera jazzmaster myself. Well i hope I'm wrong and everybody makes a lot of money and has fun playing these.
A top loader, huh?Like the Jimmy Page? It does change the feel, the string tension. Teles are almost perfect, out of the box, ,- Yellow, White(s), Surf Green, - ideal pickup arrangement,- appearance, sound, - it's a lock. One guitar that sprung from the surf, already perfectly formed,- no need to change a thing.
Yup. At first I didn't think of it, but I can't say that it has an impact on sounds. I could compare it to my Baja, but different pickups and other variables can make that tricky.
It's weird that they don't show where it was made. It's not on the Fender website, not on Sweetwater, or anywhere else I could see. $1400 for a guitar that looks like a Mexican tele with those awful tuners is ridiculous. I'm not going to lie--this looks like a Squier tele, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I really like the paranormal Squier guitars. But this guitar is 3-4 times the cost of those. I like Mascis, but this one is a hard pass.
I think the lines between Mexican made and US made guitars will blur eventually. Thats at least my experience with Fender the recent years. If it's a good guitar, it's a good guitar.
If I recall, the jazzmaster started off as a fender sig and then became a Squier that effectively became a permanent part of the lineup, so not too far fetched to think this will happen with this guitar too!

Dunno which I love more: the absolutely gorgeous sparkling blue or the fact you got J Mascis himself to sit in for the intro.
it's pretty sick that he came here, huh
He was definitely in the room.
Loving the look of this guitar and the sound of those thick OD/dist tones.
Lmao that wig
no warning straight up DinoJr cosplay 😂❤️

Smart to play some QOTSA with a tele anyways, I’ve heard Homme’s used a tele multiple times in-studio and that sounded pretty damn close already!!
yep, Troy Van Leeuwen said in the Reverb video where he watches the Sound Like QOTSA video that you need a tele for Turnin on the Screw
Really nice demo of the pickups and such. Truly! Like better than most demos of guitar.
I love me some J. Mascis (first Squier and first signature I’ve ever owned). I also love YOU!!! Great demo per usual.
😘
Nice demo bro, but is that a tube wig or it’s solid state? I’ve noticed it’s quite important for that Dinossaur jr. tone
Hybrid wig 🤟🏻
Oh yeah the best of both worlds (;
@@eirikstordrangeguitar tube wigs are warmer though
Love that you played some Queens with it. Sounds killer. Killer playing too.
Thanks! ;)

I'm note sure actually. I'll check tomorrow!
It's mirrored, is this too late lol@@eirikstordrangeguitar
Man you fooled me with the image, was thinking its J Mascis xD
Great video looks a really sweet guitar must have
I just found your channel last night and really enjoy it. Great work and playing! 🤘🏻🤘🏻 Sub’d
Assume this made in Mexico? Couldn't find the info on the Sweetwater site. Nevermind, just spotted the tiny sticker on the neck plate.
Yup, Mexico.
I need to stop watching all telecaster demos effective immediately.
What’s the riff that starts at 0:15? It’s bugging me cause I’ve heard it before and I can’t find the song name.
Start Choppin'
How come middle position so quite? Is that normal with teles?
It’s wired out of phase
Maybe a mirror pickguard is cool but also maybe it isn’t for me!
Cool guitar though!
You are a silly silly man and I enjoy it
;)
I actually thought for a sec you were gonna lean to doing a bit as Jay, "Well, it's okay, I guess".
haha
That's one sexy Tele! Love the sparkle blue 😎
Indeed!
What;s the dc resistance of these pickups?
Did you leave the stock strings on it or did you put your usual Paradigm 11 on it?
Can't remember! Think I put 11's on, yes. I hate factory strings, so.
Sounds perfect to my ears! Also how beautiful can one guitar be?? right?!
hah yeh!
Oh that Fantasia blue sparkle
Disney Blue
great as always! thoughts on the pro reverb? how does it compare to your other fender amps?
I like it. Not as ear deafening loud as a Twin Reverb, and has actual headroom compared to the Deluxe Reverb. It's the perfect middle brother/sister.
@@eirikstordrangeguitar does it sound similar to either of those amps too?
some riff on 1:58 is a song?, sounds like mew for me
Probably one of his original riff
I was gonna ask the same thing, it sounds good
A riff I made years ago for a demo on this channel. Never made a real song out of it. Maybe one day!
How do you like the Fender 68 Custom Pro Reverb?
I love it! Working on a video as we speak
@@eirikstordrangeguitar very into that! Killer Amp! It sounds awesome!
How do you like that amp??
I dig it! Not as loud as a Twin. More headroom than a Deluxe. Video in the making 🤟🏻
I think it would look better with a nitro finish on the body.
Nitro flake from Fender, good luck at this price point
The finish is actually a 1970's gretsch drum finish J got somone who ran a garage to put it on
Isn't J Mascis primarily a Jazz Master user?
He only plays JM’s live. In the studio he plays Gibsons for rhythm and his tele for leads. Also only uses Marshall amps for live gigs.
Hey look! There is another Fender video with Jay Masssss ..... wait what? who'sss.... costplay?¹
I don't mean for this to sound like a bash on J but I think the Mascis Squire was so successful because it was dollar for dollar the best Jazzmaster. I think J is a fantastic player and artist but I dont think he has the 1300 dollar Mexican tele clout ya know?

You were hitting notes you shouldn't have in the start choppin intro. Aside from that pretty swell
Smooooth saaailin

i don't get sparkly bodies with faded necks. other than that, great review!
No strings-through body but strings-through bridge… isn’t that les fat?
Some say so, but I'm not sure. Difficult to confirm that it is less fat. I have a Baja tele, but it has different pickups etc.
As J says, everything sustains through a Big Muff. Same goes for "fat."

The answer is this is a copy of J’s. J’s is a refinish.
There is the answer. You are welcome.
😳.....🤣🤣👏👏👏👏

It says Made in Mexico on the neckplate of every guitar
expensive for a Mexican, no?
I think the lines between Mexican made and US made guitars will blur eventually. Thats at least my experience with Fender the recent years. If it's a good guitar, it's a good guitar.
Diggin the wig. Not diggin worn neck w shiny bod.
LMAO
Price point is too high-they definitely should have somehow kept it in the same price range as the JM Jazzmaster.
I thought so at first also, but then I remembered that the JM is a Squire.
If I recall, the jazzmaster started off as a fender sig and then became a Squier that effectively became a permanent part of the lineup, so not too far fetched to think this will happen with this guitar too!
