Where does he say Messi didnt work hard? He just says Messi has raw natural talent compared to Ronaldo. Messi is a natural genius whereas Ronaldo has to train certain characteristics in himself to be as good as he is. Its like Goku and Vegeta. I like how they implied Messi doesn’t do hard work, and he’s just talent.
But the truth is, what he does is really hard, he just makes it look easy because he’s too good at reading the game. It’s almost impossible to copy what he does consistently throughout an entire calendar year in football. Look at hazard, it’s proof that being mentally and physically disciplined is very important. You always have to put in the hard work.
I think they are both too good with how they keep themselves consistent. Age is the only thing that will break them down.
Now to consider who is best than the other it has to be your style of play, but in reality Messi brings a lot more to the table than just scoring goals in a team and that’s a FACT. I love them both and I’m just waiting for the day they both retire so people can truly understand how hard it is to put up the numbers they do.

Lionel is the most complete player I've ever seen. Passing. Finishing. Free kicks. Vision. Playmaking. Not the best Pen taker but also not as bad as people make it out to be.
Ronaldos movement inside the box and his heading ability is perfection. Other aspects of the game he doesn't really do a lot of them for quite some time now, mainly a striker.
I'm taking Lionel every day of the week. He is a magician who also worked hard to get where he is people forget he came to Europe at 13 away from his family and earned his place in one of the best teams in the world.

As an athlete, your body learns with experience; the success and failure against good opposition (e.g., good central backs/mid fielders/goalkeepers etc made Messi practice harder; personal goals: eyeing for a spot in the main squad made Messi practice harder, after all let’s not forget there was a guy called Ronaldinho playing for Barcelona before the world cared about Messi). For many others, CR7 is the best ever because of his persona, the stardom, the clutch player, the complete poacher ; header, weak foot, back heels etc. Many people also tend to neglect the aesthetics of dribbling of Ronaldo in Man Utd.
Although Messi is the greatest dribbler and chance creator, Ronaldo’s mentality for desire to win no matter what, his decisiveness and clutch moments make him the greatest poacher, for many as a whole, the better player

Regarding the talent VS hard work debate .
Generally in life , very high levels of success can only be reached with hard work , doesn’t matter how talented you are . Sure talent adds something , but at the extremely high performance level talent means less and less and hard work becomes the big differentiator .
There are so many players, too many to count that have extraordinary talent but never seem to unlock there potential and that’s why . You can never ever reach the top with talent alone and Messi is no exception . You can watch interviews of players who played with him , they all attest to his work ethic and discipline .

To do any kind of good analysis of sports, it is imperative to take into account anticipation. Most stats show you the action but not the anticipation. However all great sportsmen are ahead of their peers by a few neurons. Ronaldo for example is known for his excellent heading ability. But what makes it possible is that he can pick the trajectory of a cross before others some times even before the cross is made because he can read the body of the crosser. Unless stats capture this kind of anticipation, you can never truly have a good metric of sports.

Straight off the bat that line of not needing hard work, just talent in soccer is so absolutely ignorant. It's probably one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports in the world, at the elite level. You need to be in perfect shape practically all year long, and you are demanded to perform 4-8 times every month, where the tiniest mistakes can lead to heavy criticism or a huge turn of fortune in your career. There's a reason soccer players suffer a lot of injuries and quite a few of them have been talking about the mental tolls of their career recently. Of course they make good money, but compare that to some UFC fighters or boxers who fight like 1-2 A YEAR and still make ridiculous money.
