Honestly if they're going out there with a different sound then maybe they should consider calling themselves something other than "The Guess Who"...🤷🏼

    • @aschule5684

"Thank you" that's exactly how I feel. It's like Lynyrd Skynyrd. Originally, there was a contractual stipulation that there had to be at least "3" original members in the band to call it "Lynyrd Skynyrd" although somehow that didn't hold and it ended as Gary being the lone member even though there was debate about Ricky Medlock because he played drums with the band on the "Muscle Shoals" stuff before "Pronounced" was released with Bob Burns but even so that's 2 if he was considered original. Molly Hatchet toured as Molly Hatchet for years (and may still?) with no original members and I'm sorry there's just something wrong about that to me. I don't begrudge Gary and the band success and wish them all well. I'm glad for their sake, they have an audience but for myself, they aren't "The Guess Who" and if they were to call themselves something else it would be easier to get behind them and be supportive. It's almost a shame there isn't a law about this kinda thing. Molly Hatchet being the most glaring example of this sort of thing.

I know faces in bands change as the years go by and understand when listeners react when Cummings is not there but I want to hear good music in this day and age and regardless of the name this edition of The Guess Who sounds refreshing after hearing all the great old hits for all these years.

you have a legitimate point. However, it's very very common to continue on once members disperse. It's okay to make decisions either way. Some groups prefer to call it quits, while others continue on. I've seen plenty of bands in their latter stage. and, they were sometimes better with new life.

But I think that Justin Hayward and John Lodge have done it right by traveling as themselves and playing their own Moodies music along with their own compositions. The “Guess Who “ played a great part in my young musical life from:Shakin all Over to Undone. I would go see the Gary Peterson Band knowing that he was the drummer who played along with Randy and Burton. I just would have a problem seeing them as the Guess Who. Just like Grand Funk isn’t, without Mark. The Guess Who is not, without Randy and Burton. Sorry. BTW. It’s so cool that you and Shannon are going to be able to see Burton. To all of you who obviously cannot think - imagine Ringo Starr gathering some musicians and touring under the name "The Beatles". Surely that band could perform songs written by Lennon/McCartney/Harrison - but would that justify the band calling themselves "The Beatles"? Furthermore, if Ringo Starr only occasionally performed with that band (more often being replaced by another drummer) - would it still be accepted to call the band "The Beatles"? The issue - which many here don't seem to understand - has nothing to do with how skilled the band members might be, but how deceiving it would be riding on another band's fame. Got it?

I have to be honest… I didn’t know much about The Guess Who other than they were the classic rock band from the 60s and 70s who wrote “American Woman” and “These Eyes”… both great songs! Recently, I was informed of their new album Plein D’Amour in a Jellyfish Group on Facebook, claiming their new stuff sounded surprisingly like Jellyfish, and I have to agree. Jellyfish came out in the early 90s with their power pop sound that was a mix of Queen, Supertramp, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, 10CC, and Cheap Trick, among other influences. As where each of these influences sounded like themselves, Jellyfish sounded like ALL these band mixed into one. That’s how this new album by The Guess Who sounds… not like Queen, or 10CC, but like JELLYFISH. From the production, the lush harmonies, the song dynamics, the instrumentation, the song structures, chord progressions, the melodies… There is no doubt in my mind they had heard and studied the album Spilt Milk by Jellyfish. And that’s cool! I love Jellyfish! And Plein D’Amour is a fantastic album packed with great songs! I even ordered it on vinyl. But I have to point out, in the interview Derek Sharp made the comment that he was older than the guys in Jellyfish, I guess to set himself apart from them to appear as if they weren’t an influence, but in fact, Andy Sturmer, the lead singer of Jellyfish, is about two weeks older than Derek, and Roger Joseph Manning the other Jellyfish mastermind is only a year younger. So, there is NO WAY he wasn’t influenced by Jellyfish. Listen to Spilt Milk and then Plein D’Amour, there will be no denying the influence. That being said, whether they call themselves The Guess Who or The Guess What, Plein D’Amour is a great album and worth a listen.

It really is sad to see these guys living a lie, and then try explain it all in a very short interview. The only reason a small crowd of people go see these guys anyway is because they just want to hear the hits, they don't know or realize that there are no original members left from 1965 to 1975 (except sometimes Garry Peterson). That's why they very rarely play up in Canada because people there know and expect too see and hear the original members. By the way, if their albums don't look and sound like the old Guess Who, It's because it's "NOT" The Guess Who. Duhhh...

I can understand despite the changes over the years, if they are currently charting on sales and airplay charts putting out an occasional hit records , competing with the Weeknd, Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons,etc......like they did in the 70s. I can see continuing going to the concerts. But when you don't hear from them since Clap For the Wolfman or Star Baby, the hits are done, it becomes a nostalgic classic rock band. You can release a new single everyday....but if we're not exposed to hit like These Eyes......you lose touch, and the replacements don't mean a thing

I've seen Burton solo a couple times, and he always does an excellent show. I've seen Randy solo, and with Fred Turner, and they were great as well. John...thank you SO much for this interview! It's a slippery slope with longtime fans of heritage bands. Some have a hard time adjusting/accepting different members (can you say..Foreigner?) But really-- how many bands are out there with the same members the more time marches on? It's always about the MUSIC,and if a band can create great new music, that should be what counts. The Guess Who released a very strong album last time out ( The Future IS what It Used To Be...I love it!). So looking forward to what they've produced with the new album! the single is fantastic. Period. The other two songs are solid as well. The title song even Rawks! I'd love see them live, but I'm not sure they've come anywhere near WNY. Best of luck to them on this new album,and...long may they rock! T

Garry If you’re looking at the comments I just wanna ask I wish I could get your opinion on the unfinished album that you guys were recording in the spring of 1970 (The Way They Were) then released six years later. If you can go back in time I’m just wondering would there be any way that could of been completed?? It seems like it would’ve been such a great album that would’ve had a few hits. Even the song (Got to find Another Way) probably should’ve been added to it as a filler and I think that song would’ve been a hit as well. I’d love to hear your take on that album and how you felt that it wasn’t completed.

I’m a life-long Guess Who fan. I started out with “Wheatfield Soul” and never stopped. And I have to admit…I was a complete hypocrite, on the train with so many others, saying “it’s not The Guess Who anymore”….but then, I’ve always really liked “All This For a Song”…but I kind of used the lame excuse that “at least Kale, Donnie and Kurt (originally) were involved….AND, I had never listened to anything since, other than one song from “Liberty” that I wasn’t crazy about…,but, it all was a completely unfair, dumb, assessment….because, thinking back, as heavily involved in the writing as Bachman was, when he left, The Guess Who never sounded like they did when he was there. Because suddenly, there was a new hand, heavily involved with Burton in the writing, whose writing and playing styles were very different from Randy’s…but, it was still great music…”and, ah, well, Burton is still there”…then they bring in Donnie and soon after, Bill Wallace, and the sound was a little different again…next, Troiano comes along, and Donnie and Kurt are out, and that was a big change in the sound….in other words, was it not The Guess Who anymore when Randy left? So why is it not The Guess Who when Burton leaves? “All This For a Song” still had a very similar vibe to “10” and “Road Food”, but was still very different without Cummings…BUT, I STILL really like that record…because, it’s about THE MUSIC….I mean, really, someone could claim that they feel it wasn’t The Guess Who anymore when, based on the usual, very shortsighted criteria, when Chad Allan left and Burton took over lead vocals. At that point, The Guess Who was a band with recordings and hits….and then they get a new singer. SAME DEAL HERE….but now, Garry is the lone original member, but it’s GREAT to have an original after so many years, and besides that, it’s the MUSIC that matters…and everything I’ve heard from “Plein D’Amour” and “The Future IS…”, is really good, well executed, wonderfully written, GREAT MUSIC!….this evolution of the band DESERVES full respect and credit, alongside every other version of The Guess Who that preceded it…I mean, the band changed major writing personnel 5 or 6 times in just a five year span (70-75)…which naturally, changed their sound…and then it jumped again in 78-79….so here we are again…and the wonderful legacy of being a band with great music and songwriters and great players continues today….THIS band IS The Guess Who, just like every other version was…and, jury’s still out, but THIS version of The Guess Who may be my favorite…I STILL can’t “Plein D’Amour” out of my head and heart…again, it’s about the music, and the new music that this band creates, is just as wonderful as everything that preceded it….ladies and gentlemen, The Guess Who…I love ‘em…

Be upfront and honest and they are not. They are not an extension of the original band. They are a tribute band presenting themselves as the real thing. Not one hit since Burton left. This isn't the Doobie Brothers when one singer leaves and another qualified one steps into his shoes. They make a living off of the songs that the other people wrote and recorded. Peterson barely takes the stage now, so they can rarely even say there is an original member...albeit one who did not write any of the hits or sing any lead vocals. Making a living off of other people's creations.

I just saw them last night. I was at work and we got some promotional tickets and I quickly snatched up a couple of them as I have had The Guess Who in my music rotation for a little over 30 years. Then I started doing a little research and found that there was only one original member left in the band. I lost some of my excitement and even contemplated not going. Day of the show comes and I got a million things to do and by time to leave for the show most of them are unfinished. I kind of feel out the wife to see if she wants to skip it as she has no idea who they are as she just moved to the USA a year ago and grew up in China. She was looking forward to going as it was to be here first concert of her life, so we go.
These guys were amazing. Derek is an unbelievable singer and the rest of the band is tight! I am so glad I put aside my preconceived notions about this line up of musicians, whatever they are calling themselves. If you love The Guess Who songs they do an awesome job on all those great hits and their newer songs that I had never heard were also really entertaining. Go see these guys and show them a lot of love. I have been to hundreds of concerts and seen some of the legends of rock and I enjoyed this concert as well as just about any I can think of…. Go just to support and appreciate the talent that is assembled with these guys. You will not be disappointed.

Listen , would i love to see Burton and Randy in the band ? Sure i would . There are so many bands this has happened too. LRB for example. The Yankees dont have Ruth , Mantle ,Jeter anymore , but they are still the Yankees. These guys are the Guess Who. I get what people think , but thats the way it is .If you want to hear Bachman and Cummings, go see them . But like it or not , this is The Guess Who !

First, I'm rather disappointed John, that you used the "H" word in your headline! The most over-used word today by media and leftist types for people with different opinions than theirs. 2nd, I've seen their show, and I've seen the quizical and confused reaction by many, if not most. They look and sound like an 80s hair band! The audience likes the classic Guess Who songs, with a harder rock twist. But everyone rushes to the bar or bathroom when they play one of their own. They may own the name. That is the attraction. But they are not The Guess Who!😢

Of course this is not The Guess Who of old. I think the new album singles that have been released so far: The King, Headline, and Plein d'Amour, are all great songs. I'm glad they didn't set out to recreate the "old" Guess Who sound. I think these songs are musically interesting, and I can't wait for the new album. Keep on going guys!

"Not the old band?" Really then why are NINE out of 13 songs in your sets at least 50 years old? LOL Fakes and Liars....

Anyone who expects a 60 year old band the sound the same as it did back in the day is expecting too much. Yes, back in the day, they had some amazing songs. No, the present incarnation does not sound the same as the 1960s, band. Guess what? This is not 1960, it is 2023. You need to enjoy the music for the music! If you're attempting to enjoy the music because of the name on the sign, you're missing the point. Forget the name, close your eyes and listen. Either you like it or you don't. And as always, that is your option.

Correction: Burton Cummings was the lead vocalist of "The Guess Who" for nearly 10 years. Derek Sharp was the lead vocalist of the "fake" Guess Who for 15 years. Therefore Mr Sharp has NEVER actually sang with the REAL Guess Who! Ever!

How many hits has Derek Sharp sung or written?
