Puns usually involve referencing certain words or putting them into the joke itself. Those Santa Claus "puns" seem more like kinda-subtle in-jokes about Santa, what he does, and where he usually lives.

Everyone can hate me for all of eternity but when I was a kid... I *FUCKING LOVED* Ernest P. Worrell... I loved ALL the movies. He was fucking hilarious to me...
Well Ernest wanted to keep the Pagan Santa Klaus(originally based on a German pagan festival) in the Phoenician festival of Mithras (who died on dec25th for his followers sins) Instead of trying to shoehorn in a middle eastern deity into a celebration based in cold weather, winter solstice festivals.
As much as i love his edgy humor (at least when he had balls to be edgy and not please basic bitches) the autism joke was just unfunny. Not offensive just not a good joke hell his avatar joke got a chuckle out of me

The joke was when Santa goes to see Joe when he is doing his puppet show. NC says that it is so unfunny that he probably entertains the autistic children. The backlash was so massive that Doug Walker had it edited and removed. It is even mention in NC's 2nd Top 11 Nostalgia Critic Fuck Ups video.

For some history, Ernest was originally a character used in commercials where he commonly used the phrase "KnoWhutImean, Vern?" while talking to the camera. This evolved into a TV series called "Hey Vern, It's Ernest!" which was shot entirely from the perspective of "Vern", and happened to come out in the same year as this movie, which is why the scene where he visits Vern is in here I would imagine.
