They apparently thought that the audience's soft little child brains could not handle the sort of super complicated, nuanced character arcs that they put in half-hour long cartoons in the 1950s.
Here's my two cents, The Jim Carrey Grinch is a One of a Kind movie you're likely never to see anywhere else. This Grinch meanwhile is a generic animated movie you could replace with pretty much any other.
I think at this point, since the Cat in the Hat review, this review and his editorial about method acting, I think Doug is slowly liking the Jim Carrey version more.
To be honest I would have liked this movie a lot more if benidict embraced his British accent and the movie complimented it by making the grinch meaner and more devilish
@@dailygeek1334 well YEAH if they're adapting a story about a self proclaimed "mean one" (the Grinch is meant to be the villain). Here, he's a nice guy at best and a grumpy neighbor at worst to the Whoville citizens and yet the audience watching the movie is supposed to *hate* (or root against) the Grinch and his actions.
The jim Carey grinches backstory makes sense alot more, as a kid he was different, he just didnt see the big deal about christmas, but met his crush Martha and figured that christmas is the perfect time to give her something she would love for christmas, but he also felt self conscious of his looks so he tried shaving his face to look more appealing toward her, but instead got laughed and made fun of, thus losing the little sliver of christmas spirit he had
@@simple-commentator-not-rea7345 To the Grinch's degree: no. You would need a lot bigger trauma for that. Edit: some errors were in the text: not a bigger trauma is supposed to be need a bigger trauma, cor is a typo of for.
I was subjected to this by my family when we took the kids out for a fun movie day. Literally the only memorable part of this movie is the scene in the middle when he gets flashbacks to his childhood and even then it’s extremely out of place.
At least in Jim Carrey's Grinch, when he went to Whoville, he covered his face, cause everybody hated him, so he didn't start a freakout. This Grinch just goes into Whoville, and nobody freaks out, because, HELLO, The Grinch hates Christmas!
Both The Jim Carrey/Ron Howard version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and Illumination's Grinch FUCKING SUCK GREEN EGGS AND PIG BALLS However Jim Carrey's portrayal is WAY BETTER than Benedict Cumberbatch's voice portrayal
The studio originally wanted Benedict Cumberbatch to voice the Grinch using his natural voice, but Benedict felt that, since the rest of the cast is American, the Grinch should have an American accent.
Wait, are you serious? Cumberbatch is a good actor, but if this is true, then it's clear that he DOES NOT understand the original source material AT ALL. The Grinch was supposed to have a deep intimidating voice. It would be a voice that would fit someone so mean like him. But with the voice Cumberbatch did, it just goes against who the character is and removes all the intimidation out of him. But then again the writers of this film did that as well so I shouldn't be shocked.
@@NEETKitten you know what that's a good point. The character's already being written to not match the original at all so why bother trying to emulate the voice?
Is it just me, or does Max in this film look like a rejected model from The Secret Life of Pets? I mean, couldn't they have at least made HIM look unique?!
General Storm Oh they will, because Shigeru Miyamoto is on board and has a big role on it. Who is he? *The father of Super Mario.* Sorry, I’m just really excited about this movie.
@@Yougotcaged102 hi I’ve seen you before, I think it was on Smash Speculation, ironic because of this movie causing one of the biggest leaks in Smash history
Yeah but Cumberbatch was already a seasoned actor. So he would've had to know to study the source material 1st. Even if he did a distinct Grinch voice it would've made the character stand out more. Even if it was just a little bit. Honestly though; the movie should've gotten Tim Curry to do the voice.
Maybe Cumberbatch was VERY unenthusiastic about this performance and the director thought that this would make the Grich's annoyance at Whoovile more authentic?
Actually, in the live action Grinch, that whole fiasco where the kids bullied him is used to explain why the Grinch hated the _Whos_ , not Christmas. The film actually stays true to people not knowing why he didn’t like Christmas, even as a baby he was biting the head off a Santa Clause plate. N-not that I’m defending this... dumpster fire of a movie, but it certainly does add more depth to Jim Carrey’s Grinch~
Bites the head off a Santa Clause plate, AND draws Santa and his Sled being hit by a rocket. I never noticed that, but you're right; the film IS faithful to the whole mystery of Grinch's hatred of Christmas. Although it's not that mysterious, Dr. Seuss just wrote he was born with a heart too small, which apperently translates to not feeling joy and love as you do on Christmas
Maybe it’s just me, but the fact that they cast Benedict Cumberbatch but didn’t actually let him use his actual voice angers me way more than it probably should. I remember when they first released the poster for this movie and announced that Cumberbatch was voicing the Grinch, I actually had a spark of hope in the movie since I felt that was perfect casting. But no, they just got him to do the most generic ass voice u can think of. Don’t get me wrong, there are certain movies that he has been in that work without his deep British accent, such as the MCU movies, but it worked there because it helped make Doctor Strange a more relatable character than he was in the comics. It doesn’t work for the Grinch because he’s not supposed to be relatable. We’re supposed to think he’s mean. He’s supposed to be one of those characters that we love to hate so that it makes his redemption at the end all the more satisfying. Whether u love or hate the Jim Carey version, u can’t deny the fact that Jim Carrey nailed it when it came to the Grinch’s voice, personality, and movement. So personally, I’ll take the Jim Carrey version over this version any day of the week because for all the things that movie got wrong, the one thing that I believe it absolutely nailed was the character of the Grinch. Not sure if people will agree with me, but that’s how I feel.
3:11 In other words, they basically made Cindy Loo Who a copy and paste of Edith from Despicable Me. Not surprising, considering they like to remind us of that movie with their other movies.
Correction dude, she’s not entirely an Edith copycat, Cindy doesn’t even have Edith’s mischievous personality, for most of the movie, Cindy is a charming and sweet little girl who’s desperately worried for her mother and wants to make things better for her.
"I already have the greatest gift I could ever get: burglary insurance. You are a close second." Imagine Cindys mom telling her daughter this in a very loving tone.
I always interpret the “please don’t ask why, we don’t know the reason” line as a Who telling the story, and being completely oblivious to what they did to the Grinch
Liv Drawz That works in the Jim Carrey movie because the Whos mocked and belittled the Grinch. But in this one, it’s not anyone’s fault, the Grinch just had a lonely childhood, and in the original the Grinch didn’t need a reason. He was just a grump, someone you enjoyed disliking, not a tragic character you were supposed to feel bad for.
@@MadHatter42 This harkens back to the early 2000s where we couldn't accept some people are just evil and thery all need tragic motivation. The first movie that stands out to me for doing this was Spiderman 2 with Doc Oct.
@@curiositykilledthecat5118 then again even in recent comics (especially superior spider-man ones) they point out how otto really had a tragic background and could have easily be as heric as peter with the right environment. film oto is basically ironically otto probably without that bad life he had in comics UNTIL he becomes doc ock
@@curiositykilledthecat5118 Of course! Because apparently evil cannot exist, merely misunderstood heroes. Adolf Hitler? Tragically grumpy artist. Joseph Stalin? Could have been a dancer if his dad didn't beat him. Jeffrey Epstein? Poor guy committed suicide because he just didn't fit in.
Is it me or does this version of the Grinch seem like an exaggeration of an introvert? Not fond of being around people, but has some kindness. Mainly to animals.
Yep, it's a movie that tries too hard make the evil villain likable simply because he's the guy we're following for the story. When the whole point is to hate him.
It’s more of a spectacle that represents people who has trouble of fitting in with others while Carrey was somewhat anti social but also doesn’t want to miss out on a opportunity of being sociable
“Do you have an Albert in a can?” “I hope not then we’d have to let him out” I can’t be the only one who thought one of them were going to say WAHAWAHAWAHAWAHA
To be fair to the 2018 version, the Grinch probably goes into Whoville a lot because he obviously can't get any food on the top of Mt. Krumpit and just tries to keep to himself, all the while doing petty things to inconvenience the Whos around him. Their diehard fanaticism for Christmas and harshness towards anyone who chooses not to celebrate is probably the reason why the Grinch hates Christmas, and isn't on good terms with the Whos.
20:52 "you know that's another problem with movies like this. They're treated like cartoons, not animated films and yes, there is a difference!" That's what we've been saying about anime! There's a difference there too you know
Exactly what is wrong with most of dragonball super and boruto, it's like they forgot how to anime. Of course they are mostly cash cows not caring about what they began as or evolved into at all, but that's why this film is so bad and why they are basically not any good either.
Anime is literally just the Japanese word for animation. In Japan, the Simpsons is anime. The word cartoon is also a synonym of the word animation. You guys are going through great lengths to defend your liking of cartoons. If you think American cartoons are just for kiddies, watch an episode of South Park. Not every cartoon is Spongebob.
In the new Grinch movie, there is no thematic purpose for him being a green monster, the movie could’ve had a normal person be the Grinch without any changes at all
Almost NONE of the Whos even look like whos. The Whos from Norton Hears a Who fit more with The Grinch, the ones in Luminations Grinch are pretty much humans but the original Whos at least har fleshy colored fur. Even max whos a furry dog doesnt really fit with The Grinch, he looks like a background dog from Secret life of Pets.
I find it surprising that Benedict Cumberbatch's American accent is so subpar here, considering that he actually does one quite well as Dr. Strange in the MCU.
Netflix not only was able to remake a beloved Dr.seuss property (green eggs and ham) and were to recreate the non sensical that all Dr.seuss books took place in, they were able to incorporate not only funny but (GASP) smart writing, actual you know .... morals the THING DR.SEUSS IS KNOWN FOR !!! And not only that but they actually were able to make 13 episodes and each at about 30 minutes, with a second 10 episode season. And it keeps you engaged the entire time, and this grinch couldn’t keep us engaged for less than half the time the green eggs and ham sires did. Oh fun fact! Each episode is painfully hand drawn and has smooth and detailed animations, costing neflix 72 million for the first season, the budget for the grinch was 75 million. So in summary, yeah go watch it instead.

Jim Carrey gave his heart and soul to that performance. Say what you will about the rest of the film, but he was absolutely brilliant, and his efforts should be commended.
The Original Grinch: I love everything how it's very close to the Book and art is good for being so old and the simple story makes it memorable. Jim Carry's Grinch: The Commentary of the Commercial part of Christmas is really a good way to show the bad side of caring only about how Presents and looking very flashy, and the Back story of the Grinch is one good thing to show why he hated Christmas. Illumination's Grinch: This one just seems way too over the top, Heartless from the others, I get this is for kids but how can kids know the true meaning of the message if the overly funny and over top reactions and the Grinch being literally confusing to know if he's like anymore so yeah I prefer Jim Carry's then this mess
I feel like every single Grinch movie has its own version of The Grinch. In the original like she was like a Hermit isolated from everyone, in the live-action one he was more like Bigfoot and in the animated one he was like that grumpy neighbor nobody Minds
With the Jim Carrey version at least had an identity, this movie however has two identities “almost every animated movie cliche since is here ” and trying to hard and failing
Jim Carey’s Grinch is still remembered and being shown on TV 20 years later, this version will probably be forgotten about very soon, it’s not question the 2000 film is so much better than this generic money grab
“This version will be forgotten very soon,” “Generic money grab” Dude, how long have you had your head in the gutter? It’s okay if you hate the 2018 version, but at least it actually had interesting visuals and character design compared to all pink buildings and nightmare-fuel whos in the 2000 version. And saying that the 2018 version was ONLY a generic cash grab is a bit harsh. Sure Illumination isn’t entirely one of the best companies in Animation history, but they’re not as bad as the moronic side of Sony Pictures Animation, or even The Weinstein Company (who’s responsible for some of the worst animated films in history) for that matter. And while the 2018 Grinch Movie isn’t entirely perfect, it does actually try to do some character building and storytelling. I actually liked the concept of how The Grinch plans his heist day by day instead of doing it all on Christmas Eve. And the side plot of Cindy Lou Who trying to make a wish to Santa to help her mom was pretty cute too. All and all, it was okay, and while it still had a few moments that were pretty mediocre, at least it was 1000 times BETTER than the god awful Lorax movie.
I'm pretty sure the reason is supposed to be his heart was two sizes too small, which is why his heart grows three sizes at the end of the story, when he turns good.
It always bugged me that Dr Seuss never gave a reason for the Grinch hating Christmas. Which is why I like the Jim carry version more because it gave him a reason. It's a stupid reason but I'll take a stupid reason over no reason at all
Personal opinion: I think this movie is…….. cute. It’s not great, it’s not horrible. Just cute. Colorful, charming and something to put on every once in awhile
I love this movie and while I acknowledge that it has flaws, it doesn’t make me angry. This is my opinion and you don’t have to agree. Thank you for listening to my opinion. 😀
The voice itself feels like a shit imitation of an already bad performance, not Cumberbatch himself but whatever the hell direction was wanted from him.
Cloudinthehead 02 the entire time I was watching that scene, all I could think of was how much natural resources, time, money, manpower and possibly lives they could save if they GREW a huge tree in their town square instead of chopping one down and dragging it back to Whoville.
oh, for SURE!!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE its animation! Why didn't they animated Suess's stuff like this from the start?! It's how its MEANT to be! It looks fantastic! I love it!!!!
It is so good it looks like it was actually made by Seuss himself, with the bruckles, Flerz and everything, while most of the others were made by clueless clowns trying to be funny but ruining the entire message
Nostalgia Critic should review Green Eggs and Ham. He'll be so surprised how good it is, yet still make jokes about certain things. Like I imagine him making a reference to the movie Falling Down which starred Michael Douglas in relation to Guy am I. Like the scene when Guy goes to the diner and asks for mush. The waitress asks if he wants anything else or something on it, and then I would imagine it cutting back to Critic and he would say, "Hey! Don't push him farther off the edge more than he already has! You don't want him holding another restaurant hostage again!" And it would show that clip from Falling Down of Michael Douglas` character pulling out a gun in the restaurant. Falling Down is a good movie by the way.
As somebody who has actually lived in an orphanage I find the 2018 backstory to be relatable. They celebrate Christmas but the gifts you get are randomly picked and don’t reflect your individual interests at all.
I saw it in the theater, unfortunately. It was exactly the same as every other Illumination movie. So pretty and yet so bland at the same time: a cinematic paradox.
Oh wow. The first video I have ever seen was the the review for Secret of Nimh 2. I actually like this movie quite a bit. However the video was a really good rant. So I got sucked in. Now Doug Walker is one of my favorite critics.
I don't understand why they gave him this absurd direction with the vocal performance he was doing in this movie. When I first heard about him being cast as The Grinch, I thought he would have been a good choice and he certainly can pull off voice acting like he did for Smaug in The Hobbit films. His voice was intimidating for the character he was portraying and he has the capability to do a growly, grumpy voice like the original actor did in the TV special.
I grew up watching the Jim Carrey version with my Dad, who grew up watching the animated version & even though we don't love it like we did when we were younger, we both still find it entertaining. At least with the live action one cindy lu wanted to learn about the grinch, giving a reason to going into detail about his reason for hating christmas.
What if in the ending, after the Grinch says Merry Christmas to Cindy Lou, he looks out the window behind him and sees his younger self smile, nod, and fade into the distance. I don't know. This is just an idea.
Amazing if I ever make a fan made adaptation of the grinch for RUclips, that’s going in it. I also have an idea to portray what both movies were going for but still staying in the spirit of the original It’s Christmas morning the kids wake up, they run to the living room only to see everything gone, they’re sad everyone is sad but then they remember the presents under the tree in the town square and they run over to it They see that the town square is empty too, the kids are sad, a few adults are pissed off The parents try to comfort their crying children Cindy has this exchange with one of her friends Friend: “that grinch stole Christmas!” Cindy: “no he didn’t, Christmas isn’t about any of those things that we’ve lost” Friend: “then what is it about?” Cindy: “you know what I’m gonna say” *The friend has a look of wonder and recognition on his face and solemnly nods* Then Cindy Lou Who steps up holding the hands of her parents and starts singing the classic song we all know and love Slowly but surely more and more who’s follow until the entire collective is singing, then we cut to the Grinch’s side of things to see the story unfold as normal

That stupid. The difference of the voices would of made this show would of been better.
Not to mention his lair on Mount Krumpit is so clean and bright in this version when Carey’s live action film fits wit character dark, gritty, messy

Dude, how long have you had your head in the gutter?
And it would show that clip from Falling Down of Michael Douglas` character pulling out a gun in the restaurant. Falling Down is a good movie by the way.
As somebody who has actually lived in an orphanage I find the 2018 backstory to be relatable. They celebrate Christmas but the gifts you get are randomly picked and don’t reflect your individual interests at all.
"Black Christmas is officially the 2nd scariest Christmas film ever made"
Christmas With The Kranks is the 1st
You dare mention the Forbidden One? Have you gone mad?! Those who speak that name are cursed for 1000 Christmas seasons!
At least Billy kills people whereas CWTK kills those dumb enough to watch it.

”Who’s there?”
”Cindy Lou”
”Cindy Lou who?”
”Yeah! How did you know!?”
i like that. i don't know if it's an original joke, but i like that.
This is the closest I'm gonna come to ever seeing that movie
Lucky Star agreed
same
Same.
Fucking same
I saw it in the theater, unfortunately. It was exactly the same as every other Illumination movie. So pretty and yet so bland at the same time: a cinematic paradox.
26:35
Or, those Who's are just incredibly stupid not to open their eyes and realize they've been robbed.
Pretty sure that wasn't the original intent.
I can agree to that.

0:56 I’m so glad that this was the first video I’ve ever seen of nostalgia critic. That was the best introduction I could have asked for
Oh wow. The first video I have ever seen was the the review for Secret of Nimh 2. I actually like this movie quite a bit. However the video was a really good rant. So I got sucked in. Now Doug Walker is one of my favorite critics.
Moon Christmas Power Make Up!
Poor Benedict, at least we’ll know him for Sherlock and Doctor Strange
Don't forget KHAAAAAN!
As boring as the movies are, I still like him as smaug
Caleb Mayfield damn right.
25:20 Nostalgia Critic: "It's the Grinch, shouldn't he have taken that glass?"
Me: "Or knocked him down?"
That would have woken him up.
Or smashed the glass over his head
Or steal the Guy himself using a bunch of Present Paper ?
*Dooku’s voice*
“I’ve been looking forward to this”
Our Dr Suess desecrating has doubled since the last time we've met, Count.
Spinlok Good, twice the books, double the price
Ah.... prequel memes always make my day. The world is truly alright now.
Ill take them on alone!
I grew up watching the Jim Carrey version with my Dad, who grew up watching the animated version & even though we don't love it like we did when we were younger, we both still find it entertaining. We both saw the new version together & even though we both think the new version looks nice, we found it mostly boring.
You just have to picture Cumberbatch holding his nose throughout the recording process.
Actually yeah I held my nose shut, did my best Benedict cumberbatch impression and it did sound kinda like this version of the grinch
Nostalgia Critic did a Sailor Moon transformation
My life is now complete
I was a bit surprised because he did not seem to be into Sailor Moon or anything.
@@melindoranightsilver9298 he did review Sailor Moon.
@@marvinthemaniac7698 Yes but he also admitted that he never really watched or got into it. That was why he went to two other people to explain it to him. He said the show was not for him.
@@melindoranightsilver9298 it was certainly for me! 😎😎😎😎
@@melindoranightsilver9298 maybe he didn't write the transformation joke. or maybe the laugh was more important then his preference.
"Somehow this connects to The Grinch" ...best transition 2019.
Matthew Baker He needs to explain the full details on how he got that video game composer to appear in his 10th commercial special and also needs to review The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.
I know this man did not just call Tyler the creator a last minute replacement for Snoop Dog
Well he’s around 40 years old so it makes sense that he doesn’t know who Tyler is
I had no idea that was Tyler, man, he could do better than this crap
@@coltafanan man, the soundtrack of this movie was the best part. Tyler killed the score
@@coltafanan naw, he killed it in this movie. He enjoyed helping make this soundtrack so much that he made his own EP about the Grinch.
Well if he did this little thing we call "singing", it would sound better
Rating the three Grinch film:
1. Original Grinch movie
2. Jim Carey's Grinch
3. Grinch 2018
Gokufan 2029 1st is gold, 2nd is shit, and 3rd is the golden turd.
@Daniel Gump Wow, ever heard of the saying if you don't have anything nice to say dont open your mouth at all! I respect opinion but still
@Daniel Gump Well the movies dont have a good track record, so I dont blame you
1st is good
2nd is entertaining
3rd is a headache
1. good
2 . Dog shit
3 . Fine
You know what I’ve realized about this movie? The Grinch isn’t characterized as the Grinch; he’s characterized as Gru. Illumination was trying to write another “more of a jerk than a villain but actually a nice guy,” and that just doesn’t work for the Grinch.
Also Cindy Lou kind looks and entirely acts like agnus from despicable me.
He actually wore the same scarf as gru in the movie
Start of the episode: "This episode brought to you by: LoveBooks."
Me: Oh, this ad is going to be fun!
It is fun 😂😂
A special offer right noweth!
..."noweth?"
25:32 She doesn’t recognize him because she has no idea of what how he looks. Like the Grinch said earlier in the film “No ones ever seen him (referring to Santa)”
Dr Seuss literally didn't want these movies to be made.
It's true. He fought tooth and nail to not have his books be made into movies.
person who ruins the joke He wanted his books to remain books. The only exceptions being the cartoons he specifically commissioned. He didn’t want them to be made into features.
No kidding. Chuck Jones did a good job with the old Grinch toon though.
@Anything. Lucy at least we have Green eggs and ham
Producers: *in an interview* “if dr Seuss was alive he would of loved to see what comes of this”

Dr Seuss: I never wanna make a movies about these story’s
Okay, I found the Nostalgia ads kind of annoying at first, but their strange surrealism has grown on me. I caught myself actually wondering how he was gonna handle it as soon as the product was named.
my favorite is the one with jim carrey but honestly I won't argue that the old animation is absolutely the best reproduction of the original. Also yeah illumination can burn in a fire for all I care they don't pay their animators well.
At least with the live action one cindy lu wanted to learn about the grinch, giving a reason to going into detail about his reason for hating christmas.
"you're silly" reminded me off Monty Pyton's Camelot scene xD
What if in the ending, after the Grinch says Merry Christmas to Cindy Lou, he looks out the window behind him and sees his younger self smile, nod, and fade into the distance.
I don't know. This is just an idea.
Anything that's better than that stupid screaming goat ending, seriously, that meme died out years ago.
Amazing if I ever make a fan made adaptation of the grinch for RUclips, that’s going in it.
I also have an idea to portray what both movies were going for but still staying in the spirit of the original
It’s Christmas morning the kids wake up, they run to the living room only to see everything gone, they’re sad everyone is sad but then they remember the presents under the tree in the town square and they run over to it
They see that the town square is empty too, the kids are sad, a few adults are pissed off
The parents try to comfort their crying children
Cindy has this exchange with one of her friends
Friend: “that grinch stole Christmas!”
Cindy: “no he didn’t, Christmas isn’t about any of those things that we’ve lost”
Friend: “then what is it about?”
Cindy: “you know what I’m gonna say”
*The friend has a look of wonder and recognition on his face and solemnly nods*
Then Cindy Lou Who steps up holding the hands of her parents and starts singing the classic song we all know and love
Slowly but surely more and more who’s follow until the entire collective is singing, then we cut to the Grinch’s side of things to see the story unfold as normal
That would require the film to be subtle but it would be a great way to symbolize him coming to terms with his past.
"In the name of Christmas I will punish you" - Sailor Christmas
I’m so glad I’m not the only otaku
I like Sailor Noel better
