Defying Gravity was the first in a long line of Act One finales that stood out to me in my years of theatergoing. And I knew she could nail it all along.
I already knew they were singing live and it perfectly fits the whole musical theatre vibe and Idina Menzel said that makeup and costumes help her get into character so I’m glad they sung live in the film.
I say this with the most admiration. Wicked is revenge of the theater kids. Made by theater kids, starring theater kids and made largely for theater kids.
The easy answer, of course, is "Defying Gravity" - that has been my war cry for over 20 years...but now that I have seen it 3x already (with more visits planned - CAN'T WAIT for the sing-a-long versions) my new favorite part is Elphaba's dance at the club....beautiful and heart wrenching....and I KNOW how that feels.....been there...
💚💚💚💚💚My favorite part is the musical score of "for good" during the Ozdust Ballroom scene where Elphaba and Glinda dance. 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹I tear up just thinking about it. 💚💚💚💚💚The silence of that emotional scene juxtaposed to the defiant jugger-naut of Defying Gravity is emotionally over-whelming: rare in one film. 💚💚💚💚💚Also, love looking for the easter eggs and the special references to the Wizard of OZ. Oh yeah, the cameos. 💚💚💚💚💚
I guess honoring the OG’s and defying expectations are the best facts. Because Wicked went a little above what I expected and become my favorite movie of 2024. I had no major doubts for Cynthia & Ariana for a second. I was little worried about the live vocals though. But I now feel at ease
I truly love this movie, Cynthia and Ariana Grande truly did an amazing job on this movie. I truly love Defying Gravity Cynthia really brought that wonderful performance. I was super amazed that Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth made an appearance, you can’t have a wicked movie without the originals. 🖤💚🧹🩷✨🫧
I love that they sang live! There’s just a small part of me that breaks every time it’s mentioned because Cynthia isn’t the first woman to sing while flying live, P!NK has dominated that for years in her concerts.
