The movie was incredible!!! Seen the show 5 times on Broadway. From the minute that downbeat of the Overture hit to the end, I was bawling, So awesome in the way they expanded a lot of things plus taking bits from the book. Loved hearing all the Wizard of Oz easter eggs. They did it so well!!! There was applause after every song. Now I cannot wait to get my ticket to see the film again, going for ROUND 6 to see it again on Broadway!!! Kristin and Idina's cameo...... goosebumps!!! The Poppy spell on the classroom was really cool. So different vs. what people know from the stage version. In the stage show, "Elphaba" casts a full spell that causes all the students and everyone in the classroom to have Seizures in saving the Lion Cub's life.
I was thinking the same thing! He has his whole line of, "He saw green and thought it meant go". I was kinda bummed that line was cut from the movie b/c they met in a different way.
I kind of like that the movie establishes that he's less judgemental of Elphaba from the outset. He's more or less instantly drawn to her, even if he goes after Galinda -- and he only does that because she makes the first move.
Glad to hear they expanded the Animal rights angle for the movie. When I finally saw the musical, I was disappointed that they just seemed to pick up and drop the story thread when they felt like it.
Has anyone mentioned that they totally did away with the Clock of the Time Dragon? It was a weird element in the book and the big backdrop for the stage musical. I never really fully understood it and I was glad that they skipped it for the movie.
Last night I enjoyed a visually stunning and spectacular experience and I am ready to go again! OMG!!! BEST movie I have seen in a long time. Cynthia is a powerhouse performer and she OWNS this role! Her voice is incredible and her emotional depth make her character both sympathetic and fierce. I get the feeling Ariana is playing herself but there is no denying her own impressive vocal range that harmonizes with Cynthia's so beautifully and she was very suited to the role of Galinda. I loved all the references to the Wizard of Oz 1939 movie, which is one of my favourite movies. Admittedly I've learned so much from watching these RUclips reviews, otherwise I would have missed a lot! That's why I need to see it again! The sets are magical, lush and expansive, the costumes were gorgeous, the choreography, the songs all brilliant - Defying Gravity gave me chills and made me cry it is SOOOOOOOOOOO extraordinary! Those words: "Ev'ryone deserves the chance to fly! And if I'm flying solo At least I'm flying free." Loved, loved, loved it and cannot wait for Part 2!!!
Well the play is 2 hours and 45 minutes long and part one of the movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long so there was bound to be a lot more things added in.
5:13 No, in the show Fiyero and Elphaba meet when he almost runs over her with his carriage. He makes a joke about how the driver saw green and thought it meant ‘go’. Been that way since the mid-late 2000s.
I won’t lie, I loved this movie. But there is a change I didn’t agree with: Boq’s last name. In both the book and musical, it is a tragic surprise who Boq becomes, that builds up over the course of the story. And considering Boq was originally a separate character in the original Baum books, it works as a surprise. Honestly if they had just gave Fiyerio and Boq more scenes showing their friendship, it would actually lined up better for Part 2.
Tbf, unless you've watched the musical I think it would've flown over most people's heads. I watched the musical and even I didn't catch that foreshadowing until I saw this video.

Actually, #6 is in the stage musical...sort of. It wasn't in the script when the show opened on Broadway, but that meet-cute scene was added to the stage version in 2006 when the West End version opened. The circumstance was a little different, and the way Fiyero ribs Elphaba about her skin color is a different joke ("Maybe he saw green and thought it meant 'go'.") Nonetheless, the meet-cute before the Ozdust scene is in the stage version.
Not true about Fierro not meeting Elphaba till the ball. He bumps into her and makes a joke about it in the school courtyard when he arrives in the musical

I did not see this info below in the comments, and you didn't include it in the video: Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the songs for the original Broadway show, and additional for this film, was the guard in OZ who said: "The Wizard will see you now!"
On stage, the Defying Gravity scene takes place directly in the Emerald City. The actor undergoes wireshooting training in order to set up the wires necessary for flight. In the movie, it takes place on the planet’s moon, using real broom flight capabilities
The political salience of the narrative is so heartbreaking. I cried in the theatre thinking of the people that the country I live in is helping to murder en masse in Palestine, Lebanon, Iran… and anyone who speaks up against this can lose their jobs, is painted as an antisemite (even when they are Jewish)… it’s so depressing that this is the world we live in. I saw someone on instagram relating elphaba to Kamala Harris and even Jon Chu said something like that in an interview and I was so disgusted. This is the same woman who said “I’m speaking” over Palestinian activists and then made it a branded catch-phrase. Americans need to wake up and realize that BOTH parties are “the wizard.”
Dont worry there is a cease fire that will stop all those poor innocent Palestinians from being attacked..... Oh wait there a a cease fire on Oct 6th of last year too and something happened? What was it again?
this video is so full of half truths. the stage musical does show Elphaba meeting Fiyero in the exact same way except its a cart not a horse. they certainly meet well before the oz dust
I really didn't enjoy this movie at all. Everyone seems to love it, but I suffered watching it, no joke. It was so freaking long. I didn't buy the friendship between the two women. I don't know. I don't know why I didn't enjoy this movie at all while most seem to think it was an amazing movie. I just really, really didn't enjoy it.
I am totally psyched to see this movie. I loved the musical. And I absolutely HATED The Wizard of Oz, because of the ending. I had to remind myself that Wicked is referencing the original Wizard of Oz books, NOT the movie. In the book, Oz was real. In the Judy Garland movie, it was all a dream/something she imagined in while knocked out from the tornado. Wicked the musical/this movie doesn't make sense in the context of the Judy Garland movie, so you really have to forget it exists.
it's never confirmed it was just a dream. it's left like that because how else is dorothy supposed to explain any of that? easy, make her think it was a dream. we dont know how time works between kansas and Oz so maybe the shoes brought her but only an hour or so had passed in kansas. You're assuming it was a dream, but it's definitely not a fact. could be true, might not be true.
Loved the play. You can NOT replace Idina and Kristen. Loved the movie. Cynthia and Ariana did an amazing job. Most of the things mentioned in this "Top 10 Ways The Movie differs from the Musical" aren't accurate. The movie did an amazing job filling things that can't be done on stage. However all of the story line concepts in the movie were definately present in the stage play. I've seen the play half a dozen times in several parts of the country with several different actors. I've seen the movie several times now, and absolutely love them both. But, Idina and Kristen made these parts what they are. Can't wait for part 2
I'll be honest, never seen the musical. Didn't know it existed. So watching this movie, I knew there were going to be some things that they would try to link to that I would not completely know. Having said that, this movie leaves a lot to be desired. Actors did well with the script but the plot gutted the movie and the sequences from one scene to another were very rigid and some which made no sense at all. Why is there a wizard school? What does it matter who elphaba and her sister are? Why is there a prince who came to school for about 2-3 days? Did they even make it clear that there are other countries in the land surrounding Oz? Why, in a world of talking animals, munchkins (who weren't small), bizarre looking people of all shapes and sizes and a GREEN EMERALD city, would anybody be shocked that someone has a green skin when magic is a key element to this world? It would have been better to have Elphaba be known for a great unexplained calamity in her childhood which would be a catalyst as to why people feared her.
I am like the shortest distance between 2 points. I have to say I can’t get enough of Bowen since I saw him on the show with Akwafina I laughed so hard he’s truly hilarious.
I like the added scenes with Elphaba and Galinda actually rooming together, as well as the added bickering in What is this Feeling

** Witch of the East
With the limited portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the East in the original film, there’s plenty of room for writers to expand on the events leading up to and following the tornado.
A whole new conversation may take place here. Or even the event may differ
- Were they all already in Munchkinland, engaged in some kind of argument or conflict before the tornado struck?
Or did Elphaba arrive after the incident, drawn by the news of what happened to her sister? as depicted in the old film.

I know right the movie for The wicked musical adds a lot more to it than I thought it would
I did not see this info below in the comments, and you didn't include it in the video: Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the songs for the original Broadway show, and additional for this film, was the guard in OZ who said: "The Wizard will see you now!"
The movie was so good, everyone clapped at the end of the movie
I’m so excited!!!
On stage, the Defying Gravity scene takes place directly in the Emerald City. The actor undergoes wireshooting training in order to set up the wires necessary for flight. In the movie, it takes place on the planet’s moon, using real broom flight capabilities
Neat, whoever is cast as Elphaba must be truly courageous, and not mind heights.
what 😭
@@TheRoyalsWasTaken The planet has a moon
in the movie it takes place in, and around, the castle in the Emerald City
*edited for spelling

I KNEW THAT I HEARD FIYERO'S VOICE IN #1!!!
Movie of the year🔥🔥🔥
Mrs Coddle looks more like Madame Morrible from the play
a rare case when the movie version improves upon the source material
You mention the cameos in that bit then totally forget to mention the creator of wicked appearing seconds later lol. Sorry Stephen, they forgot you!
Toss, toss....
Comparing a stage musical to a cinema is ludicrous…it’s like comparing radio to television.
Cool but Why did they change the iconic bubble dress?
this video is so full of half truths. the stage musical does show Elphaba meeting Fiyero in the exact same way except its a cart not a horse. they certainly meet well before the oz dust
Why is Defying Gravity done in about 6 or so sections, is reminded me of LOTR Return of The King ending.
Er Elphabas father is the wizard
The movie is twice as long as the first act of the play
One thing that's the same is that I won't see either one
I really didn't enjoy this movie at all. Everyone seems to love it, but I suffered watching it, no joke. It was so freaking long. I didn't buy the friendship between the two women. I don't know. I don't know why I didn't enjoy this movie at all while most seem to think it was an amazing movie. I just really, really didn't enjoy it.
I enjoyed the movie; saw the musical like 12 yrs ago so i dont remember it. I love the focus on animal rights, especially bc cynthia is vegan.
I almost the watch it really interesting ❤❤❤❤
The song Wonderful is missing from the movie
That's in Act 2, so it will be in Part 2.
Can’t wait to see it
the movie is so good
I am totally psyched to see this movie.
Why do you keep calling her Ga-Linda? She gives up that Ga-Linda crap in the film, its simply Glinda.
6:33 hello Ethan your fellow students Japanese yakuza game I’m playing kiryu on Xbox one
Wicked the play and musical is also based on wicked the book
The book is a LOT darker and has some major changes.
Social Media from Kappa Kappa Kappa County says that "El Fa Ba Should Be White"!!
Not green? That would change the whole story.
cooool
im this videos 700th like
THANK YOU FOR USING THE CORRECT PAST TENSE OF PROPHECY, PROPHESEID
I HATE IT WHEN AMERICANS SAY PROPHESISED
💚🧹💖🪄
Uhhh...I'll just stick to the stage version, thank you very much.
The movie is amazing
My sister just saw this movie and thought it was okay although she loves the soundtrack.
for me it was amazing, one of the best movies I've seen
Miss coddle was the worst decision ever made. And I loved the movie 😅
Madam morrible more like madam horrible
How many times can you milk remakes of wizzard of of
I'll be honest, never seen the musical.
Are you kidding me? Even one of the actors said everybody in Oz is gay, including the chickens
Bowen was a poor choice. Can we get better representations of gay men that aren't queens🙄
Oh Grow Up That’s Your Opinion and your Opinion only as people Genuinely don’t care
I am like the shortest distance between 2 points. I have to say I can’t get enough of Bowen since I saw him on the show with Akwafina I laughed so hard he’s truly hilarious.
