After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads, and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots); a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) and four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Yeah, I think so. A few comments are suggesting it's Glinda and that she secretly watched Elphaba's death/escape then fled back to the wizard to tell him or something... but I don't think Glinda needs to do this in secret. She can travel around in her bubble openly without anyone questioning it. Elphaba flying around on her broom is the bigger problem.

@@thetraidarpodcast I wrote the Glinda theory. In the musical (if they're going to adapt it as is), Glinda and Elphaba say goodbye to each other and witnesses Elphaba's death while hidden. They obviously don't want any questions to arise as to _why_ Glinda was present at the "murder," so she cannot travel back in her bubble. She's the only character for whom returning to the Emerald City instantly makes sense (if that's the same cloaked rider in the other shot).

I'm confused, this isn't a change to the ending of the musical at all. Fiyero ALWAYS went to the Wizard with Elphaba's broom, we just didn't see that moment on stage. We know it happened though, because it happened in The Wizard of Oz. In my head I always figured Fiyero intentionally guided Dorothy as part of the plan to fake Elphaba's death

    • @paulwhittemore4309

That's exactly how I thought of it as well---that Fiyero went along with Dorothy to ensure the plan played out, conspired with Elphaba to have her set him on fire which prompted Dorothy to throw the fateful bucket of water, then accompanied her back to Emerald City with the broom, etc.

Elphaba actually says to Fieyro “I thought you never get her” in the play which implies he didn’t immediately come back to her and did go with Dorothy to the Wizard and that’s why it took him so long to come back to her. I highly doubt they’ll change the ending. They’ve stayed pretty much to the play so far. The only thing I’ve heard is they’ll be a few new songs.

  • @brycechristensen2296

If anything changes about the ending, I think it will be something to make it clear Glinda knows that Elphaba survived. If Eplphaba does come back to Emerald City to confront the Wizard, it will be together with Glinda, and they will jointly force him to leave Oz forever. But Elphaba won't reveal herself to the masses. She will go into exile and Glinda will be the only Ozian who knows. Glinda will go to Munchkinland and reprise No One Mourns the Wicked, maintaining the official story in order to protect Elphaba.

I like really like this idea, because it gives Elphaba the chance to confront the Wizard one last time and for him to meet his daughter for the first time after finding out the truth. It's one thing I didn't like about the stage version, that Elphaba just simply leaves Oz after the melting. However, I don't want Elphaba to be the one to defeat the Wizard. Instead, it should be Elphaba together with Glinda as it completes Glinda's character arc of finally finding the courage to stand up to him (and Morrible).

So, I worked on the set of these films. Here is what I can say, this decision was not easy. Every song and musical number from the second half is included and included at the correct part of the story BUT, there are MULTIPLE SONGS added and QUITE a bit of story added to the second half.
Truly, the second half of Wicked (while musically beautiful) doesn’t make sense.
It is physically impossible for Fierro to be there right after she melts and be with Dorthy giving the broom back- SO a decision needed to be made and a NEW STORY will be told.
If as a fan of the Original this will upset you, I strongly suggest that you enter with the expectation of the STORY not being EXACT.
As for the story of the two witches, how everyone becomes who they become- that doesn’t change.
      There is one other issue.
The young woman who plays Nessa can’t walk- so decisions had to be made on that front as well. Two versions of that story were shot- I’m still not sure which one they went with. We shall see.

@@joshuacoldwaterThank you for commenting on this! I'd wondered about many of these points, particularly Marissa Bode and the fact that she'd be unable to walk. Um, that's Toto sitting in front of the tin man, not Elpheba's broom. He's holding the axe in one hand and his other hand is empty. I COULD see editors cutting it out if they wanted to go that way, but I don't think they are. That's the scene where Dorothy ask to go home and the Wizard is like do this for me first. So when we see them walking back, that's already after Elpheba is "dead". She is riding off to meet up with Fieyro, cause he's not going to ditch the group on the track back to Oz like "hey BTW I gotta go do something else" remember he still wants his brain. So he'll probably go meet up with Elpheba after that, once the Wizard is long gone and MM is locked up. Honestly probably while Galinda is singing No One Mourns the Wicked is when he's heading over there.

The hooded figure is likely Glinda. She has a scene in the show where she confronts Morrible and Oz. It would be too conspicuous (and she knows how her image could be damaged) if she left the castle via bubble. Likely Elphie implores her to take Fiyero’s horse and get away quickly, even giving her the same cloak Glinda gives her in act 1. She’s on the way back to the city to do the confrontation with the evil duo and kick them out of Oz.
Also in the show, Fiyero returns back to the castle and says “it worked!” before revealing the secret. Likely this “it worked” moment won’t happen at the castle this time and could be changed but storyline-wise, all these events could play out fine and in order.

I feel like the part with Elphaba making Nessa walk is too important to leave out. I see why they wouldn't want to, but they could just use a stunt double for that part. Either way, in Wizard Of Oz, Dorothy's house drops on Nessarose as she's flying. She doesn't need to be able to walk in order to fly.

Hm, love all the speculation. It's fun. But I think there's a big mistake in this video (and one or two other little ones...). The VO suggests that in the musical, Glinda doesn't know Elphaba is still alive and thinks she's dead. That's not the case at all, right? Unless I've grossly misunderstood the musical ALL these years, Glinda knows exactly what's going on.
The three of them conspire together to pull off this plan. They need Glinda to help make it work. It's basically the whole reason they sing For Good - because they both know they can't ever see each other again after this. Glinda's not singing that song thinking Elphaba is about to die.
Then when we circle back round to No One Mourns the Wicked, we realise Glinda is keeping this huge secret and is fooling all of the Oz citizens. That's the sad pain of the song (and of For Good). She can't publicly mourn the loss of her bestie - not mourning because of literal death, but mourning because she can't have any contact with her again.

The one on the horse is believed to be Glinda on her way to the Wizard since it is Feriros talking horse and would know who Glinda is so no one will know who is really traveling on the horse since Glindas bubble would be too well known. Then it will catch up to the musical to where Glinda tells the story of the green bottle . Then Madam Morble is arrested Then Oz goes and gets ready for his balloon. Dorothy with the balloon and Glinda would come in and do her thing like in the orig movie and send Dorothy with the shoes. Additionally the Baum sequels have more family tone that will defenitely more suitable for a larger PG13 audiences while the Maguire sequels went more on a matured themes beyond the first book. It will also benefit Universal if they want to create a long running franchise based on the Oz IP.

It's difficult to even keep count of all the attempts studios have made to launch an Oz series. A large reason for that is because the 1939 film, while so ingrained in pop culture, is a fairly loose adaptation and its most iconic elements have been kept under lock and key. The _Wicked_ films are the first time in eighty-four years that an Oz film has been made with the full partnership of the current IP owner. _Return to Oz_ paid an exorbitant fee for less than two minutes of screentime for the Ruby Slippers. Many films have had to pay a copyright advisor/expert that would ensure Mila Kunis's makeup in _Oz the Great and Powerful_ wasn't within a specific number of shades of Margaret Hamilton's. The MGM film's intellectual property will enter the public domain in 2035 (something I'm sure the team behind _Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey_ are well aware of) and I guarantee there will be a massive amount of Oz interest.
Everyone loves _The Wizard of Oz._ If they don't, their parents deprived them of a childhood. But it's for that very reason it's been really difficult to do much new with it. The closest we've seen to faithful Baum adaptations was _Return to Oz,_ and it traumatized a generation.

The only detail the filmmakers missed (and maybe purposely, given the slight alterations to plot) is that the witch's broom is supposed to be burnt (in that, the bristles at the end are intact when we see the glimpse of Dorothy and gang walking down the road in the opening but in the Wizard of Oz, she burned the end setting fire to scarecrow, and the bristles were burnt off when Dorothy laid it at the Wizard's feet... err, head? face? I think that the Scarecrow walking the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy and the others to deliver the broom IS something that happens in the play too, but he just goes back to Elphaba AFTER Dorothy and Toto go back home to Kansas. The only real timeline discrepancy that happens in the Wicked musical and Wizard of Oz sequence of events is "The March of the Witchhunters" (since it has un-rusted Tin Woodsman and the Cowardly Lion being assembled at the same place BEFORE Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow and meets Dorothy. Were this timeline accurate it could only happen after Fiyero was the Scarecrow)
BUT who know? I wasn't really a huge fan of the ending to the stage musical so I'd be interested to see them change it if they do it better. For one thing I'd like to see that the Animals are given their rights back, making it Glinda's responsibility to rectify the issue seemed precarious at best given Glinda was fickle about their plight literally the entire play. It is an element I'm 99% sure they'll use the time for given they used the runtime in part one to flesh out the Oz world and add more Animals like Dulcybear and the other former faculty members. I also kind of hate that Elphaba leaves Oz meaning she sort of leaves the Animals to possibly be further persecuted.
I actually kind of wish that the ending would have it be shown that Glinda did tell the munchkins that Elphaba was a honorable person given the entire framing device of the film was about Glinda telling the story of what really happened. That and I kind of want a more definitive answer to where Elphaba and Fiyero will go if not Oz. That and, I know it changes the melancholy of No One Mourns the Wicked and For Good, but it would be kind of heartwarming to have a hint of hope that Glinda and Elphaba would someday reunite. I wouldn't get my hopes up on that even though it's what I wish would happen cause they are adhering to the stage musical and probably aren't able to deviate too much from the play. It's just that the movie has so much more time to make this Act Two better and I hope it will.

It honestly seems difficult to picture a Wicked sequel and what would happen in it, but again... you never know.

Yes, there was... in fact, in the second book SON OF WITCH "our Scarecrow" (Fiyero) is NOT the scarecrow that gets crowned, it's a fraud. Although Gregory Maguire had no idea that the musical would change the end of WICKED to have the scarecrow be Fiyero who leaves with Elphaba, his story of the fraud strawman in the second novel actually made the story of Fiyero work! :) And - spoiler - the dude in the cape on horseback is Fiyero & Elphaba's son Liir Thropp who grew up in their castle (Kiamo Ko, where Elphaba was 'liquidated' by Dorothy) who finds his mother's cape and broom and leads an Animal rebellion against the Emerald City.

I could see them pull off a little different twist on the ending (this comment will obviously be spoiler heavy).
If you think about the stage show ending as a classic con movie reveal, consider which character would make the most sense to be involved in that kind of con? How about the guy we know has been conning Oz right along? The guy who is shown doing classic stage magic of the kind you could use to pull off a fake melting: the wizard himself. One of part one's big additions was the posters showing him to be exactly that. What if it wasn't just about fleshing out the character, but to set up the ending where Elphaba gets her "I want" song completely literally: she can indeed "still be with the wizard," and can make her exit of Oz via balloon.
This would preserve the classic movie ending where the bumbling wizard leaves Dorothy behind, despite obviously (from our perspective having seen Wicked Part One) having to have the technical capability to repair/replace the balloon that was damaged/destroyed in defying gravity. It could also be something of a rescue if perhaps the wizard is revealed to be a (still complicit) victim/prisoner rather than the chief antagonist after all. He "[doesn't] have any real power," after all. What if that isn't only true magically?
Galinda being the figure on the horse makes sense as this twist works best with her involvement. She would certainly be the one with the opportunity to learn that she wasn't the only reluctant figure head in the emerald city; or maybe the classic paternity reveal could be how she brings him over to team Elphaba?
Finally, Galinda and Elphaba being part of a con together would explain how the girl with no particular magical talent could be the one to help Dorothy use those magic shoes to, you know, do magic.
