  • In 2010, I was in a motor vehicle accident. I fractured my back in 8 places and damaged my spinal cord. The first few years after the accident, I could hardly move my legs at all. Over time, I have gotten a good bit of mobility back, but not enough to be able to walk. I am considered an ambulatory wheelchair user with partial paralysis. Since posting videos, I have realized the importance of spreading awareness about ambulatory wheelchair users due to the pushback I have been getting. I did not realize how many people out their did not know we existed. I hope to change that.🤭
    OFFICIAL DEFINITION
    Ambulatory Wheelchair User - someone who has a chronic illness or disability and uses a wheelchair, but may be able to walk in certain circumstances

    The less people know, the more stubbornly they know it. You do you very well!

    I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user, my issue is due to severe chronic arthritis. I can no longer do the kinds of tasks I was able to do when I was younger, I have severe back, foot and knee pain that makes my mobility suffer. I am over 65 now, so I am not ashamed, I just am who I am! Thank you for speaking out for many of us that appreciate your bravery. God Bless you!

    Hey! It’s been a while since I’ve been around but I have to say that I respect you making these videos. I will say that I hate that people say things that cause you to have to make videos defending the FACT that you are an ambulatory wheelchair user. And you are doing great!

      Brandon, HEYYYY! I'm so glad you got to see this one. Yea, I started to realize more on my Facebook than on here, but a little bit on here that people were very confused about me moving my legs. Thinking I was faking for "views." I know myself and I know why I'm making these videos so it doesn't really bother me, but it made me realize how many people truly think if you're in a wheelchair you shouldn't be able to move your legs. So, I thought it would be a good topic to talk about. 😊

      @@Mom-ability I was in a wheelchair for nearly a year after I had my surgery. And I could walk but it was very laborious to do and often caused more pain. And people would act confused when I was at the store or something and I would stand to get something off a higher shelf. They thought I was just trying to get a better parking spot or something 😂

    My best friend is an ambulatory wheelchair user due to Ehlers Danlos syndrome and POTs. Mid 20s and also get called a faker. It’s hard when people make you feel like a faker or a complainer when you are chronically ill and just need to vent.

      yea, it can be tough bc sometimes it makes you feel like you somehow are doing something wrong. And quite frankly, it's nobody's business. Now, in my case, I understand because i'm putting myself out there. When I started to realize people genuinely thought I was faking it bc I could move my legs, I thought this was a great opportunity to try and inform ppl. Thank you for sharing a little about your bestie💛

      Myself and my 3 kids all have EDS and POTS. We are all ambulatory wheelchair users. We get accused all the time of faking it or abused for parking in disability parking spaces, especially if not using our chairs at the time

      @belindamenzies7620 exactly, I'm hoping more people will come to understand that you can not visually see ALL disabilities or illnesses.💛

    I know exactly how you feel. I had an accident 40 odd years ago two years and the bed. Then I started to learn to walk over the years through having a stroke and a heart attack. I have to now use an electric wheelchair because I cannot manage a manual quick story I was out with my wife one day and she was looking at some dresses so she brought one of the dresses over to show me The assistant said to me, you don’t Look disable so I said if I stick my head up my rear end, will that make me look disabled funny enough they turned and walked away very red faced.

      I just can't believe the audacity of some people. I'm so sorry you had to experience that. There's so many different reasons someone can need a wheelchair and it may not always be visible. That doesn't mean someone doesn't need a mobility device just because it's not visible to the everyday person. Thank you for sharing🫶

    I do have a personal question its ok if you dont answer back! since your car wreck how has it changed your view on life? like were you diffrent mentally before the wreck? just curious you being someone who lived through a terrible wreck! you always come across as sweet and humble on your content 🙂

    • @Mom-ability
      @Mom-ability  2 месяца назад +1

      No, I think that's a great question. The car accident humbled me. I'm more open-minded and more accepting of others. It's not that I was rude before, but I was more closed off to others. Today, my view on life and about people is much more open. Now, the first few years after the car accident, I hated everyone, but that's bc I hated myself. Once I healed from that, that's when I feel I "rebloomed," you could say.🫶 Thanks for the question. That was great!

      @@Mom-ability i couldn't imagine the inner struggles of losing something you once took for granted. Im on medicine for major depression disorder. i always try to be an advocate for it rather than hide from it. mental health isn't something to be ashamed of or should it be frowned Apon.

      @Chris-farmer 1,000%, you nailed it. Any shame around the subject is not going to make anyone feel better. There's nothing wrong with needing a little extra help. As long as you go through the proper channels to get the help you need, then I support it. Not saying you, just people in general. I've realized the littlest thing can help change some people's perspective.
