A few key takeaways for me: - Our role is to spark thought - We are that nagging voice like a child to their parent - Ask WHY - the deeper we go, the more illogical they get - Empathize with their world view, we were there and there is a whole system behind people’s immoral actions - Debating from their POV can help us empathize - Use “we” vs “you” & use open body language - Good people do bad things and bad people do good things - People being disingenuous is not a problem, what’s important is that they’re thinking about it. Thanks for this video Ed! I would love to see more content like this from you, I’m sure it would bring a lot of value to a lot of us. LOVE YOU!
I agree with everything here, but there is no such thing as a good or bad person. Peoples actions, as you’ve mentioned in your comment, are based on how they’ve been treated, beliefs that have been instilled into them and even neural structure and dietary influences. If we had been through their experiences and lived their lives, we would very likely be no different. There are beneficial as well as harmful actions, but inside, we are all the same. We all thrive on love and affection, and shrivel away when shown hate or blame. Empathy, compassion and forgiveness have an immense power to heal our deepest selves and the core being of others.

Kathy meat is not categorically necessary for human health. There are some rare conditions that force you to rely on meat. But to say that meat is per se essential for human health is plain wrong.
Kathy I‘m not intentionally ignoring what you said. I‘m not avoiding the conversation, as you can see i am responding to you. Okay let me see if i understood you correctly: You are not convinced that a plantbased diet is optimal or even sufficient for human health because there are people who went on such a diet and their health declined. But when they started eating animal products again they increased their health. Okay here is my response: Firstly, we don‘t exactly know what these people eat. Not every vegan diet (which is a plantbased diet) is adequate. For example a raw food diet is lacking amino acids in the long term. This means that we can’t know if their diet was adequate. Secondly, as i already said in my first response, there are people who have underlying health conditions that forces them to eat animal products because they cannot eat certain plant foods. Lastly i want to point out that there are major nutrition&diet organizations, the largest is amongst them, hold the position that *well-planned* vegan diets are adequate. Categorically means the same as „as a matter of principle“ or „inherently“ „fundamentally“ „absolutely“.

Thank you, Ed. I floundered and responded in many wrong ways to verbal attacks and am doing my best to respond as you so ellequently and dilligently demonstrate.
Thank you, Ed. This video really helped. I'm newly vegan and I'm still learning how to effectively have these conversations. I've messed up a couple of times by getting a bit emotional and blurting something like "pigs are kept in horrific conditions and they're as bright as dogs" if someone says they like bacon too much to give it up. This has often resulted in awkward moments with my friends and family. What I could have done was asked a simple question and left it at that for them to ponder, such as "Does our enjoyment of the taste justify the consequences?"
I could relate to each and every sentence you said. Whenever I meet a non-vegan (aka everyone around me) I try to ‘offload’ as much into as I can to tell them about veganism. Always looking forward to your content and work. Thank you for your videos, Ed!🌱
I completely agree…it's not about "winning" the debate with people, but just getting them to think and question...I think people will often be insincere, yet are likely to ponder over it later, perhaps watch a video about it...if we just get them to the point of thinking/questioning, it's been a fruitful conversation
Earthling Ed is my celebrity crush🥰 Nah all jokes aside this dude is what a blessing in human form looks like. Not only extremely knowledgeable but also incredibly compassionate and understanding. Truly inspiring🙏
Yep, asking good questions opens people up far more to exploring their thoughts than telling what they need to know. Then you become a partner in exploration with them, rather than an adversary. Thanks, Ed, this is a solid 16.5 min of advice.
You make a great point. It is difficult for me, in the moment, to ask a question instead of off-loading info. It is so hard for me. I guess the more I try, the better I will get. Thank you for being a mentor.
Thanks for keeping me on track. Your work is amazing and long lasting. What keeps me going is thinking about how many animals get to live by my choices to not see them as food. What angers me is the lies were taught. Thanks for being my beacon of hope.
You inspire me so much! I think you are really grateful for the mission you have on the planet, because you are changing things around you, and even far away from you. Thank you!
This is supremely helpful for opening the door to new ways of thinking not only for talking with others, but for understanding ourselves better. You are a major point of inspiration and education for me. Thank you
I always wanted to be vegan since I was a small child but I was never allowed. So I went vegetarian. I took that step to challenge others. Then when I was old enough to stand up for myself I went vegan. I learnt to cook (I made vegan chilli for lunch) i am the happiest and healthiest I've ever been in my life but others put me down for my morals and my diet but in my heart I know what I'm doing is right ❤ for the animals ❤
Love all your advice, I use it whenever I'm judged for being vegan... When they can't argue it'll come down to "its my choice"... Hypocritical people, talking about how much they love their dog while eating a sausage roll, no valid argument to justify it just.. "my choice".. Where's the animals choice?! 😢😢
Yes, they argue that vegans are forcing their opinions down their throats whilst they force animals to be raised in factory farms their entire life and then killed.
@@horsermchead2504 I just say, would you trade places with any one of those animals? To truly understand we have to put ourselves in the victims place... No one would trade places because they don't want to be tortured and die, but neither do these innocents, they've done nothing wrong, nothing... Just been born non human... 😢😢😢
Great points and I think this is definitely the best method for talking to people, but just in case people do get super defensive, there's that thing called the sleeper effect, which may lead to change in the end. From my limited understanding of the sleeper effect, basically the more extreme or defensive the reaction, the more likely it won't be quickly forgotten, and more likely to lead to change in the future. Whereas a person who doesn't react much may have an easier time forgetting the information they've received as time goes by, and not change.
Totally, the "skinny vegan" myth needs to stop, folks gotta pick up them weights! Don't even have to lift very often to get rid of little girl arms lol, you put on most muscle your first year of lifting. Takes no time to get some definition.
Wander Lust Here’s a picture of a vegan athlete, Barny du Plessis, showing its very possible to be vegan and muscular: themalestrom.com/fitness/vegan-bodybuilder-barny-du-plessis/ “Barny du Plessis is the world’s first vegan bodybuilder and Mr Universe 2014, amongst other national and international titles. Du Plessis went vegan after retiring from bodybuilding in 2013 due to an ever-growing list of health concerns which included hernias and acid reflux. After adopting a vegan lifestyle, the bodybuilder saw his fitness radically improve and he returned to the stage - winning the prestigious Mr Universe title in 2014. "These days I train half as much, do half as much but get better results. Why? Only one answer, going vegan, GMO free, and organic. My body is running perfectly," du Plessis told the Metro. On getting back into competing after turning vegan with his partner, Josie - World’s Strongest Woman 2010 - du Plessis said: "We now have a point to prove and a massive incentive. We are representing the vegans of the world, all the animals and the environment. My crusade is to show the world that we can live a healthy, happy, and prosperous life without exploitation of innocent creatures."”
Wow, thanks so much for posting this segment! I love these concepts -- trying to approach the word "humane" objectively, while taking a more global approach to why the other arguments exist. Understanding the other side is hard, but I learn a lot from the way you question and discuss other people's view to show them how actions are or aren't morally justified.
I’m really thankful that someone traduced this , it would be wonderful if so many people of many different languages understand what Ed said . In a way , this great advice it’s useful to share and start that talk, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽 ❤️
Brilliant video Ed, I keep watching it to help me in conversations because I find it so difficult to talk about probably the most emotive thing in my life without getting over passionate and frustrated, your guidelines are perfect💞🌱
Meanwhile when I ask if sensory pleasure justifies harming someone, the majority of people say yes... And when I compare it to other injustices they get extremely mad like HOW DARE YOU COMPARE EATING ANIMAL PRODUCTS TO HARMING THIS OTHER GROUP. They say sensory pleasure doesn't justify other injustices but eating dead animals and their secretions is justified because it feels nice...
You first have to prove that killing animals for food is injustice. Saying that it is is and going from there is either ignorant or intellectually dishonest.
@@nottodaytay5858 You said that about sensory pleasures, and then you said how you compare the answer with injustices (presumably slavery, racism, sexism, etc). The fact remains is that you can't just call it injustice, you have to argue that it is, first.
I posted this on my page thanks Ed. The thing about confronting someone if their sensory pleasures are more important than an animal's rights does not seem to be overly successful. If they are taught over and over about health benefits, I think it works better.
Thank you so much for this video Ed. The socratic method will be used in my next debate at the dinner table. My mom and stephdad already turned vegetarian last year and I am so proud of myself and my sister for achieving this. We admire your videos.

Southy yeah I do actually agree with that. I think Ed does a good job of convincing but I see your point. I have seen a few vegans that can get vicious real quick. Just remember that most vegans have seen horrific slaughterhouse footage and are very passionate about their cause. I am, too. It’s got a lot to do with empathy. So sorry if we can get angry, but if you would’ve seen the stuff we’ve seen, you’d probably rethink some of the stuff you’ve been taught.
I started for my health then I got thinking about animal welfare. It's weird being from "they're just animals" To "they are animals but don't deserve to be dominated over, they are self aware and have emotions so if I wouldn't want to be a farm animal then neither do they"
Definitely planting the seed is a great thing.....also, most people, including myself, start with defiance and will leave the discussion unchanged. But the next day the same friend will send me a photo of some vegan product they saw at the grocery store or maybe even in their own fridge. Then a couple days later a photo of their dinner which has no meat or something. Sometimes they realize they are closer to being vegan than they thought. They can continue to ruminate about the discussion on their own. So don't think its all for none if they leave the conversation unchanged.

You are effectively trying to de-humanise humans when you say that....
@@AliceRoche-ii2ke lol just because vegans speak the true definition of what unnatural killing you are doing doesnt mean "theres no such thing".
I think the "we" version and also the "you" version works.
LOVE you Ed... Thank you
I’m going florida in summer (if corona lets me) and I’m so intrigued by vegans and the ethics behind it so I tried putting myself off watching too much because everyone goes on about all the amazing food in America and tells me I’ll be missing out and all sorts like that. But being me I watched one, it was one of your uni talks or something and the way you were able to counter any argument put forth it completely changed my mind, I also then watched manyyyyyyyyy more vegan documentaries and videos . I’ve never ate meat rlly I mean I ate McDonalds but that was about it and I’ve never been a cheese person I was a milk one, I’m vegan now and I’m quite proud to be. My family will let me do whatever but they understand vegetarian much more but Now I can’t wait to go America and not be drawn to the “nice food” but instead find some nice vegan food 😎❤️ thank you ed :)
Thank you Ed for your work, it really inspires so many of us
This has been the most helpful video i've seen regarding outreach. Ever.
Questions are the answer’s - very powerful. Thank You!
Thank you, Ed. I floundered and responded in many wrong ways to verbal attacks and am doing my best to respond as you so ellequently and dilligently demonstrate.
I just leave this message to help the algorithm and that these videos reach more people, oh and to tell Ed that I love him.
Earthling Ed is one of my idols in the truest sense.
Someone to emulate.
Thank you for sharing. I will be applying these practices on my RUclips channel!
I completely agree…it's not about "winning" the debate with people, but just getting them to think and question...I think people will often be insincere, yet are likely to ponder over it later, perhaps watch a video about it...if we just get them to the point of thinking/questioning, it's been a fruitful conversation
I wish I could speak like you Ed! I love your voice!
Earthling Ed is my celebrity crush🥰
Nah all jokes aside this dude is what a blessing in human form looks like.
Thank you very much Ed, I was losing it to date and you brought me back to surface
Thank you!
You're the best Ed, keep on inspiring!
I have so much love for you Ed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Yes, they act as though vegans force their opinions down other’s throats and then force animals to be intensively farmed and killed.
@@horsermchead2504 I just say, would you trade places with any one of those animals? To truly understand we have to put ourselves in the victims place...
No one would trade places because they don't want to be tortured and die, but neither do these innocents, they've done nothing wrong, nothing... Just been born non human... 😢😢😢
Thank you!! Very helpful tips and advice
Ed, you're a legend! Thank you so much for everything you do. Terrific advice here!
Looks like Ed finally got tired of people telling him vegans were skinny and weak so he got jacked to prove them wrong
Totally, the "skinny vegan" myth needs to stop, folks gotta pick up them weights! Don't even have to lift very often to get rid of little girl arms lol, you put on most muscle your first year of lifting. Takes no time to get some definition.

Here’s a picture of a vegan athlete, Barny du Plessis, showing its very possible to be vegan and muscular: themalestrom.com/fitness/vegan-bodybuilder-barny-du-plessis/
“Barny du Plessis is the world’s first vegan bodybuilder and Mr Universe 2014, amongst other national and international titles.
❤️ Such a helpful talk, thank you Ed!
You’re awesome Ed ❤️👏🏻
I really love this.
Especially the “we”’ language. Non-accusatory is the best way IMO
Great video with a great message! Thank you for doing what you do, Ed!
Watched game changer today. Well it certainly opens your eyes 👀
I’m really thankful that someone traduced this , it would be wonderful if so many people of many different languages understand what Ed said . In a way , this great advice it’s useful to share and start that talk, greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽 ❤️
Thank you very much for this insightful video. I really like that most of your statements don't only apply to veganism but to life in general.
Brilliant video Ed, I keep watching it to help me in conversations because I find it so difficult to talk about probably the most emotive thing in my life without getting over passionate and frustrated, your guidelines are perfect💞🌱
I understand what you’re saying my vegan Jesus! 🌱👍🏻👊🏻🎶💕 I will apply these things when I talk with non-vegans
You don’t realize that when you try to convince people to live the way you do you come off as a pompous ass every single time.
You are really impressive, we all gotta learn from your communication skills and your wisdom
Wlof25 Thing is, I didn’t say “killing animals” I said harming someone
@@nottodaytay5858 You said that about sensory pleasures, and then you said how you compare the answer with injustices (presumably slavery, racism, sexism, etc).
The fact remains is that you can't just call it injustice, you have to argue that it is, first.
I posted this on my page thanks Ed. The thing about confronting someone if their sensory pleasures are more important than an animal's rights does not seem to be overly successful. If they are taught over and over about health benefits, I think it works better.
Very helpful! Thank you, Ed!
I just wanted to thank you, for what you do and for what you have tough me, which is a LOT. So thank you 😸😺

Thank you so much for this video Ed. The socratic method will be used in my next debate at the dinner table. My mom and stephdad already turned vegetarian last year and I am so proud of myself and my sister for achieving this. We admire your videos.

1) industrial farming only amounts to 24% of all environmental 'damage'
2) meat is not bad for our health's
3) humans are not designed to eat just plants
4) a processed diet is not exclusive to a meat diet
5) the west actually consume more plants than they do meat...
6) humans will die if we are forced to eat vegan.
7) you cannot condition someone to eat meat but have no choice when it comes to vegetables....

I literally took notes on this ENTIRE video. Thank you so much sempai! ❤
I started for my health then I got thinking about animal welfare.
It's weird being from "they're just animals"
To "they are animals but don't deserve to be dominated over, they are self aware and have emotions so if I wouldn't want to be a farm animal then neither do they"
Your work is great Ed, much appreciated. We need more people like you in this world.

Excellent, as always, Ed. Thank you.

Nice but I really wanted Ed to talk about vegan infighting and how to deal with it. It would be so exciting to watch!
You explain things so clearly, it's brilliant
