Self-checkouts have their place. If you only have a few items, it's pretty efficient. But if you have a whole cart full of stuff, that convenience turns into a nightmare. I used to go to a Walmart where they routinely only had 1 or 2 regular checkouts open, and the rest were self-checkout. That store lost my business because of that

CVS needs to get rid of them. Most annoying machines ever made.

I noticed how incredibly clean the glass swiping area was on those machines. The ones I have to use look like the floor of a movie theater!

Self-checkouts were a bad idea from the very beginning.

No. the self-checkout lanes were not installed to speed up shopping. They were installed to allow businesses to cut payroll and increase profits by automating the most important customer/business process. While I'd never steal from a self-checkout lane and I'd probably report someone I see doing it, I'm fine with price-gouging corporations seeing a significant loss through theft and shrinkage because they choose to force people to be their own cashiers. About 30% of the time the self-checkout errors and then you have to wait for someone to clear the error. F that.

I refuse to use self checkout and if a store only has that option available, I'll won't shop there. Fact is...I've never used self checkout and never will.

I hate them! After I shop for a week's worth of groceries, I want to relax and have someone else scan and bag them. Plus, a lot of people would have good jobs again.

And the store I work at just got self-checkouts installed four months ago! First they tell us to encourage customers to use them, now I’m supposed to steer customers to my register and keep the self-checkouts as a backup. You figure it out, I can’t!

I try to never use self checkout lines. “Keep your fellow worker working. The job you save just might be your own.” Is what I like to say. Then, there’s the idea that scanning and bagging your purchase makes you a free employee of the store…without a discount. No thanks. Pay a cashier.

what are you talking about? Self-checkout leads honest people to become thieves. (Induces theft) It also reduces jobs and forces customers to do the work. Police, judges, and lawyers hate self-checkout.

For those who like self-checkouts no matter if it's from a consumer's (like the pro-self-checkout lady shown in the video) or retailer's POV, to address the theft and user-friendliness issues, retailers should look at how numerous stores in #Japan use a different kind of self-checkout called セミセルフレジ. The self-checkout many are familiar with worldwide including in the #US and #Japan, it's called セルフレジ in Japanese. With セミセルフレジ, store staff control the checkout item entry and bagging, especially if new checkout bags are not free, while customers handle payments themselves. Customers can't arbitrarily modify the payment amount themselves without staff intervention and assistance. There are numerous videos about セミセルフレジ though so far, for retail applications, it seems many videos are from 🇯🇵 RUclipsrs.

Self checkout should be ILLEGAL. If you force me to be YOUR employee... I"M TAKING THE "DISCOUNT" EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I HATE self check-outs. I was at Home Depot buying something. The item must have had over a dozen barcodes on it. I guess wrong and the one I scanned made the machine start beeping very loudly. The young attention that came over acted like I was an idiot because it's was very *obvious* which barcode was the correct one.
