+lifetimeskater24 plus coming to camp to repair his big toe on "company time". Kobe was working hard during the off season and then shaq coming to camp either overweight or injured.. (this is after 2000 championship)
If shaq took the off season serious and maintain his shape... Kobe would of respected that and wouldnt call him names and we would see them working together and winning another 1-3 rings

phillyslasher Steph, MJ, and Lebron make 50% of their fg as guards. And pass better and more often than Kobe on top of that. And were just better than Kobe lol. Kobe wasn't selfish for wanting to shoot, but for running off a 60%+ shooter off the team, who was winning titles for him, so that he could take all the shots and subsequently lose games.

Graham Bensinger I would like I add to add to that. I agree, I think you're the best sports interviewer I've seen for 3 reasons. 1) You're incredibly well researched. 2) You don't shy away from hard questions, but you pose them extremely tactfully so that your guest will openly respond. And 3) not only do you not interrupt them, you actually listen and ask follow up questions if they open a new lane up. So often, interviews get a good response but go right back to their next pre-planned question on the page, and miss a golden opportunity.
Good luck, and I wish you every success.

Jordan treated practice as the actual game, he mentioned that is how he was able to make those clutch game winners. Because he has done it over and over again. Jordan also said that is whats great about basketball, you can actually practice the real thing. So dont confuse that practicing is bad, and definitely dont take advice from Shaq, he is very talented but not the smartest guy in the room. Now imagine if Shaq actually practiced, he would have been a monster. Iverson on the otherhand, has problems with semantics. @@razkable

Shaq and Kobe both had qualities that the other one could've used. Shaq had the great ability to dominate a game but do it within the concept of the team and Kobe had an unbelievable work ethic that helped him get the most out of his abilities. It's a shame they split up because at their best (2001 playoffs) they were amazing to watch.

Listening to this interview truly made me understand why it was impossible for Kobe and Shaq to continue in the same uniform. Shaq's philosophy was to work hard during games ONLY while Kobe's mentality was that basketball should be a close to 24/7 commitment. "Don't work hard during practices" VS "training all the time, non stop even during the off season".

    • @jasonlam6773
      @jasonlam6773 6 лет назад +12

I can't help but think that if Shaq had adopted Kobe bryant's work ethic, he could have been the GOAT. His terrible body conditioning towards the later parts of his career was obvious. And if he didn't want to get beat up during practice, he could have just worked on his free throws? I mean if a kid at the park can hit 65% of his free throws, a grown man being paid 20 million should at least be able to do abit better than 50% from the line
But what do I know. Shaq was still one of the most dominant player of all time.

Just to concur on a lot of the comments earlier: Graham, you truly are an exceptional interviewer. So many interviewers have a odd conglomerate of ego and insecurity that prompts them to continue interrupting the interviewee and exuding their (often unfunny) commentary. You're not afraid to allow the interviewee to shine, which in turn allows you to shine. Seriously, well done.

Why does everyone thinknhe could beat up if he worked hard in practice. Full contact scrimmages are only one aspect of practice. He could have still put in the effort and hard work when it comes to conditioning and drills. Get in the gym early and shoot a couple hundred free throws before the rest of guys come in for practice. None of his teammates want him to be beat up from scrimmages so that it takes a toll come game time. That's no excuse for not taking other aspects of practice seriously. For someone as big and as skilled as he was he relied on his physical gifts more than focussed skill development. As great as he was I think he took his physical gifts for granted. Imagine if he had developed the fundamentals of Tim Duncan or the repertoire of moves like Hakeem Olajuwon combined with his size and physicality. Or imagine if he made a focussed effort to get his free throws above 60 65 percent. He probably would have been putting up Wilt like numbers.

Glad he explained the title that he never gave his all in practice, but did give it come game time...That's called self motivation, something most can't do consistently, but he could and did.
I enjoy how Shaq, when asked the tough questions, answers them head on and leaves no doubts...like in one interview, how he felt about his biological father, who he never really knew, growing up!
    Gotta love his honesty...

the thing most people dont realize is that basically what shaq said is extendning his career... all the blood sweat and tears that guys leave on the practice floor was saved for the big games. so shaq performed when it mattered without taking a toll on his body in the unneccessary workouts that he obviously didnt need much of.. if he wouldve spent the time at practice just shooting jumpers i can only imagine what he wouldve done hahah

Andrew Toney was the best player of all time and a little guy... then through over work and pushing himself too hard in games then injured himself beyond repair. The Sixers dropped him like a bad habit and NOBODY remembers him nor talks about him now except maybe Larry Bird or Charles Barkley in rare interviews when people ask them who was the best and look surprised by the answer. It is even worse for the big guys. Shaq got his rings and he is remembered.

Shaq and Kobe are different NBA players. Shaq was the CENTER at 7’1”and knew he was a beast and could manhandle everyone. Kobe was an average height player at 6’6” and bc of that he needed to work harder and be better than everyone. He did that in my opinion is the best basketball player ever. My opinion obviously, but someone like the player he was is an anomaly. Shaq was always going to be the man, but Kobe worked and secured his spot as the best in my opinion.

I said the same thing as this in high school never went to the weight room an hit it hard never practiced drills hard I would go hard in live practice but in games I’d average 5-6 sacks a game but than again I’m not Shaq😂🤷🏻‍♂️ but I was 6’4 since the 8th-9th grade but my grades held me out of accepting my scholarship to go play D1 unfortunately but it was great to relive this memory. Advice from a natural born athlete who brought 3 state championships to his hometown to you younger aspiring athletes. Put the work in not only on the field or the court but also in the classroom and don’t be lazy because if not your natural talents will not be enough to get you to the next level where you dream you will be.

I'm not going to lose a kidney and ruin my health like some Georgetown hard man who gives 100% all the time and see how that so-called work ethic worked out for him (missed years in his prime). Shaq did work out hard, however, and he's not stressing that out because he doesn't need to, he's a Hall-of-famer.

Shaq had alot fo foot & toe injuries that sidelined him.
But when he was healthy ok to go, Nobody could Stop him.
No other Center at that time, and even Today, could stop Shaq Physically. From getting to the Rim.
The only way to Stop Shaq was to get him in Foul Trouble and Foul Out.
But if he didn't Foul you, Your team was gonna lose the game.
at 7'1 & 300 pounds of Mass and Bulk mostly in his Chest and Massive Back, Centers would actually Jump on top of Shaq like Monkeys to try and Stop him from Dunking.
THey would rather take a chance fouling and having him try to make both free throws than to give him an easy 2 points with a dunk.
And when it really mattered to Win a Game during the Western Conference Series and in the Finals for the NBA Championship, Shaq would Power Up and Carry 1 guy hanging onto each Arm to Dunk the Ball.
