M1/M2 Mac - Install and Run Apps from an External Drive | SUPER EASY! 🤩

- Опубликовано: 15 июл 2024
- In this video, I will show you how to install and run Apps from an External Drive on your M1/M2 Mac. I will be doing this on my new Mac Mini M1/M2 with a Samsung 870 QVO 1TB external SSD drive. If you want to expand the storage of your M1/M2 Mac or M1/M2 Mac Mini, this is a great option. Also, this works for Apps downloaded from the Web and the Mac App Store. What do you want to see more Mac Mini videos on? Comment and I'll add them to the list.

hello, I just have a one question here, once we complete all this steps shown on the video, and install applications on ssd, I can also create a separate folder and store media right, I mean simultaneously I can install apps also store media files right
@@im_Ashutosh Yes.
If you click command and drag apps it will permanently move the app as opposed to copying it. Works on all files.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that tip. It works like a charm. 😁👍💪
@@LamarMK You can also copy(Cmd + C) and while pasting press Cmd+Option+V instead of the regular Cmd+V. That cuts and pastes it instead of copying it

Just setting up my new Mac Mini M1 and found out that the 1Tb SSD I ordered wouldn't play nice with my internal Mini memory. @@kodakfuji Thank you, same to you. 🙏👍💪
This is a little off topic. I've been able to move many apps to the external ssd. And they work fine. An issue I am having and I don't believe it's related to me now running a mac mini with the external ssd is that when someone sends me photos in mac messenger by the next day the photos are gone and I only have a gray meme that looks like a piece of paper with one folded corner. I don't have that issue on my iPad or my old iMac that I used the mini to to replace. Any ideas?
WAIT so you install the software first on the Mac HD and then click and drag to the external SSD? That's it?
You a genius big bruh
Thanks bro, that definitely made my day! 💯👍💪
Very good thanks
You're welcome!
Apps are mostly self contained (when you right click on an app you can see it's actually a folder with a bunch of files inside) however what you didn't touch on is the folder application support in Library a lot of applications keep part of their code in there this is not getting moved when you move an app.
The larger portion of the App is being moved along with all your data to the SSD. Anything stored in Library is just things the OS needs to run the App I would assume, which doesn't take up much space. 👍💪

Great Video. i was thinking of ways to clone my new MI Mac mini but found out it is not possible. I only wanted to clone it in order to load the many programs I had from my previous Mac Mini. But my new Mac Mini MI has only 256GB of memory. Installing apps on an external drive allows me to load my programs and not take up space on the Mac Main drive. Thank you Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much! Subscribed to you channel. All the best to you!
Amazing! Glad to help. Thanks for the support. 👍💪
My first macbook (my first ever apple product) will come in few days and I'm curious how to install the apps in external drive since i bought 256GB (512 is out of order) and your video is so excellent. Can't wait to get mine and try it out.

These videos are AMAZING. I just purchased my M1 Mac mini - which I love, but the memory is already being eaten up! I am going to get the hub and the external drive and follow your instructions step by step. I had been wondering about installing apps on an external drive, but have been unable to find the answer until now. 2 questions:
How can I use FCPX on my main drive, but keep the clips on the external. I already export the finished vids to the cloud, but I'm not sure where all the imported footage 'lives'.
Can I use Garage Band on the internal drive, but keep the instruments on the external? they eat up memory like crazy.
Thank you again for your video.
Thanks, Glad you Love them. I use Final Cut Pro as well, simply transfer your clips to the external drive, start a new project in final cut and import those clips from the external drive. Whichever app you're using you can always save/import your files directly from the external drive. 👍💪
Mac mini is my favorite out of the M1 bunch. But I'm waiting for the 16inch.
Nice! The M1 Mac Mini is my favorite also. I think the 16" MacBook Pro is gonna be really good. It might even get a redesign.

Looking at how easy this is confirms that I will be just fine getting the 256GB Mac Mini.

Thank you, well done. I just received the same external SSD for the same computer, now I know what to do with it. What are the chances? lol
You're welcome, thank you! Hahaha, that's funny! 😀
Thank you, very useful info, i noticed some apps like Itunes and Photos when you drag them across the show as a shortcut so I guess I cant delete from the Mac Mini? Also my Imac packed up on me, luckily I have a time machine backup but when I try to go through the process to transfer to the mini it will only point the the 256GB hard drive on the mini. My Imac had 1.6 TB of data etc so obviously it wont fit, any ideas please?

First of all Great content bro and to the point without wasting anyone's time🔥🔥....I did have one question that lets say I run apps to external ssd and unplug it after use so the next time I want to use the apps I just plug in the ssd and the apps are good to use again?? Like no extra work?
Thanks, glad you appreciate it! Yup, just plug it in and you’re good. Once you install the Apps to the external SSD, they remain there until you remove them. 👍💪

What will happen if you disconnected the ssd and use it to something else like plugging into other pc to store other files?
Also will it make the app run slower vs internal storage?
Hi, would it affect performance if I ran gaming or photo editing apps from an external nvme m.2 ssd instead of the internal ssd?
Thanks for the video! I have a question: are the apps reactive when installed on an external SSD? Or slower when compared to an app installed directly on the Mac?
You’re welcome. I haven’t noticed any difference in every day performance.
@Lamar MK--thanks for sharing this simple video. Is it necessary to truly erase the drive I want to use? Or, should I simply purchase a new external HD? I have a MacBook Pro and want to install my Office 365 onto my external drive vs. laptop. The drive I want to use has needed information that I'd prefer not to delete.
You're welcome. If the drive is already working on your Mac with your files on it, try to install the app to it without erasing it and see if it works.
Finally a Mac with reasonable specs for price
True! 👍💪
@@LamarMK let me take that back. I wouldn’t even say reasonable, I think they gave us more than what we payed for, Lol.
@@hawkeyeaerialphotography6652 Haha true! When I saw the specs, I immediately skipped over the others and bought the M1 Mac Mini lol. 😁
I got the MacBook Pro M1 because I already had 2 minis and I wanted a built-in monitor and camera. Aside form the measly 2 ports Apple deigned give us, I am very happy with it.
I have a question about your LG monitor, does the LG Onscreen Control work on your mini, I have the LG27UL850W with the MacBook Pro M1, it does not work, it says it can't see the monitor...thanks in advance
Yeah, that makes sense. I never had a Mac Mini before so that’s why I got it, and I gotta say I love it.
No, the Onscreen control doesn’t work for me, I’ll do some further test and see if I can get it to work. Check out my Mac Apps video, I got a cool app in there called Magnet and it has great split screen functionality.
Fav device: M1 Mac mini, but once the 16” MBP comes out, it just might be the future fav lol
This was very helpful! Thank you! Just ordered the silver Satechi Hub. I saw that it was released via my Instagram feed lol
Question: I saw you had to erase the SSD, but will that step erase the current files I have on the SSD? Currently I have my media/video files on there. I didn’t want it get erased, so can I skip that step?
Nice! The M1 Mac Mini is also my favorite of the New M1 Macs. I think the 16" MBP is gonna be good, especially if they redesign it.
I'm glad you found the video helpful. Wow, I'm gonna have to go check that Hub out right now lol.
Yes, it will erase your files on the SSD. If the current format on your external SSD is set to APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then you do not have to reformat the drive. If the format is ExFat that means the drive is set up to work on both Windows and Mac computers so it might have issues.
A quick tip: You could move the files on the SSD you want to format to another SSD. Then format the SSD as APFS then transfer back the files from the other SSD to the newly formatted APFS SSD.
@@LamarMK Got it! Thank you so much. I will try doing that

Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I enjoy your content as a general matter; however, 2 years into my M1 MacMini I wish I'd bought the 2 TB version
I've bought external drives to store content but periodically run out of hard drive space on my Mac. That's not fun when I have a deadline and unexpectedly receive an error message as I attempt to export a project from FCPX. This video should be useful in saving me the terror of running out of room.
I will buy another external drive for my apps and let you know once it's done. Best wishes to you, and thanks again!
You're welcome, i'm always happy to help. External drives are great, especially if you're working with FCPX, you can take your projects with you. I have another video with some great SSD's that I'd recommend for speed.

@@MRSTU1210 Oh ok, I think it’s different now with the new Apple Silicon Macs. Please let me know how it goes whenever you try it out. 👍💪
Great video, thanks. I have a question and I hope it can be resolved easily, lol. I have a MacBook Air M2. This is my very first Mac, as I have only used pc's in the past. I am using a Crucial 4.0 NVMe M2 2TB ssd with an ACASIS enclosure for added memory. The external drive is formatted APFS. Write speed is running at 1689 and read speed is 2616 according to Black Magic app. I have the Prime Video app downloaded to the external drive and it functions great. The issue is, when I download my purchased movies, they are being saved to my internal ssd as I can see my used space going up fast on it and my external drive is staying the same. Is there a setting I'm missing to make the app save the movies to the external drive?
You’re welcome, glad you appreciate it. When downloading the movies does it give you an option to choose the destination to save it to? Try to go inside the App settings as well and see if you can update the save path to the external drive.
Hey thank you for the tutorial. I just wanted to ask if you know if this could work for games like the sims?
You're welcome. If it's available on Mac then it should be able to work the same. 👍
Was close to buying the Samsung T7 today. But many reviews said Big Sur won't recognise it. I wonder if they were following similar installation procedure as yours. Can you recommend some external SSDs 256 - 1TB in the £80-120 range that will work without jumping through hoops. I need one specifically for Logic Pro sample libraries. Thanks.
You can go with the Samsung SSD in this video, I used it to edit my 4K videos with no issues, great performance. 👍💪
thank you for this. Is there not a way though, to change the location where 'Apps' are saved to in the first instance please?
Or does one have to go through this principle with every App? Thank you in advance - Aindre
You're welcome! I believe it's possible, I'd have to do more research on it. For now, you'll have to do it with this method.
Thanks for this, I am running out of space on my internal and wanted to know if I can run apps off of an external. Would they be as fast on an external? I use art apps like Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro and Painter.
You’re welcome. Yes, they will run smoothly with an SSD.
Nice video, mate. The only thing that keeps me thinking whether is a good option or not is: what about if I do move a program such as Logic Pro on the SSD? Even if I do have plenty of space on it, I’m wondering whether it would load it slowly or not. Maybe I just should use the SSD for projects etc. only, avoiding moving huge programs like Logic/Final Cut. What do you think? Cheers
Thanks man! For your main productivity apps I would definitely keep them on the internal SSD and save your projects to the external SSD. For example I use Final Cut Pro installed on the internal SSD, and edit all my videos to and from the external SSD. But any other Apps, you can just install them to the External SSD. 👍💪
I keep my library, projects, and apple loops on the external but keep logic app on internal
I have run games I my usb flash drives. Run apps on external SSD will extend the life your internal SSD because it save data on external SSD. With my old Mac book air it got to point where I had ran app on external SSD because internal hard drive got too full.
@@LamarMK Can you install FCPX directly on the SSD?
When switching apps like fcpx and Lightroom too SSD where do the files/backups store? And where should we have three files stored on internal or external? Also would I have all the presets on the same SSD
You can manually choose where you want to store/backup your files in each app. I store majority of my files on external drives. 👍💪
Thanks for great video. But can you help me how to unmout (eject) the external SSD properly? Because i've got the notification that says "one or more programs may be using it".
You’re welcome. If you get that message just choose to close the apps that are using it and try to eject it again.
Hi Lamar thanks for the video it was very helpful. I notice the apps that i transferred to external SSD turns the icon to question mark when starting my M1 mac mini. However, when I click there was no problem running the apps. Also, I notice that when I right click the question mark icon, it refreshes it self and revert to its orignal icon. Is there a way to avoid the question mark icon?
Hey Chester 👋! Glad you found the video helpful. I’m not sure why you’re having that issue. Try the steps in the video I did to create the shortcut icon on the desktop and see if that fixes it. 👍💪
can the software move with ExFat instead of APFS? thank you.
I haven’t tried. Let me know if it works for you. 👍
can i use this approach for my sdxc card plugged in sd slot of macbook pro 2015?
I think so, just not sure how fast it would be.
Explained it really well but I have one doubt. Is it okay to remove the External SSD at times and only when you need to use that certain app that's stored externally you can just plug it in and run? I'm planning on grabbing the 256gb M1 MBA and I know the storage won't be enough. The method you just said will work but will sacrifice a bit on portability, that's why I'm curious to know if it's possible to disconnect the SSD when you don't need that moved app and whenever you need it, just plug it in... This will work right?
Thanks! Yes, you can disconnect and reconnect the SSD whenever you plan to use the App. Just do the proper steps and eject the drive first before unplugging it. 👍💪
